My dad worked here until it closed. I remember very vaguely going there with him when I was 3 or 4. I remember a pitch black man walking up from the ground and scaring the crap out of me. They all thought it was so funny and got a big kick out of how big my eyes got. I downloaded this video and I've converted it to DVD if anyone is interested. These will play in a DVD player so you don't have to use a computer to view it. I live in the area if anyone wanted to pick up a copy. Or I can drop a copy off on someone's porch whenever I make it to Freeburg. I'll do this for those that used to work at U/G #1. No charge.

That's what I came looking for. My dad became a firefighter in 1994 when I was 7 and his station had a filing cabinet full if these on vhs that we would take home and watch.

Glad you posted that Mike. Most of my immediate family (but not me) worked for Peabody at one time or another. My Dad started when his dump trucks were among the many that helped build the River King Mine tipple road north of town around '55-'56. I never got to go into the underground but I was all over the strip mines.

This place is cool. We used to get brick there fairly often. Good place to try and find a match for brick when repairing an old house.
