    They are actually very very sensitive engines. I have blown through many 5.9 common rails ...all it takes is one bad fuel stop or one very minor injector hiccup .

    The content is dead accurate never. mind the quality. Diagnostic requires knowledge and experience. Anyone can swap part that is the case for the majority of Utube videos. I have a 2003 Dodge Ram 2500 5.9l heavy duty that i make and use biodiesel for it. I was careless a few times putting bad fuel in there.The consequence was disastrous truck broke down gone camping . An experience i will never forget! I spent months fixing it cleaning all the lines, fixed the cp3 pump and ultrasonic cleaned the injectors. I became an expert at taking these in and out, troubleshoot and the whole nine yards. Here is the bottom line. I like to add to this good video to benefit those that have no start or rough start or smoky issue. 1/ CP3 can be rebuilt easily. No special tool is required. The most important part is to make sure the plungers retract (search for Utube how to fix them those that made in India) 2/ Filtration is critical as injector nozzles and injector passages are tiny small 3/ Injector can be taken apart and repair or replace with new part, be extremely careful with the check ball, spring and spacer (99% of the population will replace instead of repair) 4/ install low supply pressure gauge and high pressure gauge as fuel pressure in common rail is the same as blood pressure in human being. I use the mechanical gauge and tap in the fuel supply line to the cp3 pump for low pressure and a test gauge under $35 on A.Express for high pressure . That connects to the high pressure sensor on the main rail. I leave it in permanently to monitor the high pressure live. 5/ No good pressure is around 500psi, starting and running pressure is 4500-6000psi, all ports block off pressure is 24k to 26k pressure (that will tell how good the CP3 pump is) 6/ knocking, smoky condition is severely stuck opened injector; some white smoke but reasonable running condition is leaky injector; it can be isolated by blocking off 1 at a time but hard to do if there is more than 1 leaky 7/ No start or rough start is REALLY easy to fix especially if there is a high pressure gauge. Just block off 1 injector at a time . Keep doing that until truck starts and you will see the pressure quickly rise to more than 4000psi too. You have located that bad injector 8/ This tool will save you lot of money and cussing. I got mad trading a brand new chain saw for this mechanic to check the high pressure when my truck did not start a few years back. That was all he did and he got a brand new chain saw from me. Buy new only. I had them rebuilt after that bad trade of no. 8. It did not last more than 20k miles and worse yet I found out that bastard rebuilder did not put in new parts when i took the injector apart completely to clean. That was the rebuilder on Ebay!!!!!! Now how do you think i know all of these if i did not spend years working on it. In the case of the camping situation it took me months to fix it. It is NOT the truck but my fault carelessly NOT to put in extra filters and had bad biodiesel in there a few time. Nothing is wrong with the biodiesel that i made and used for years just that it won't tolerate dirty or bad fuel. What fixed the truck were: a/ clean the cp3 pump b/ clean all fuel lines c/ set of new 6 injectors (repair did not work as i lost the ball and spacer) If you take the injector apart completely and look at the nozzle tip in particular with a microscope you will understand what I am talking about. I did that!!!!!!! That was a lot of good information but i did not do any video capture as I was not in a mood to do that trying to get the struck to start and my hands are completely dirty. I am sure someone reads this along with this video will benefit greatly!!! Good luck to you!!!!! Btw i have fixed cars and trucks for decade and was a used car dealer decade ago. I already had plenty of experience in auto troubleshooting and repair. I have this truck more than 10 years already and i bought it mainly for the purpose of running biodiesel that I make. Engine runs way quieter and oil lasts way longer and of course the emission is way cleaner and smells way better!!!!!! 99% of the population will not do biodiesel due to lack of knowledge, know how and motivation. Way easier just to go buy diesel than all those work.

    Hey thanks for the video Josh. Do you think there’s any possibility blowby could be caused by something other then cylinder issues? Maybe something to do with valve seating or a headgasket blowout into the oils ducts? I have no metal, fuel or antifreeze in my oil and my radiator is bright green. Just hoping for a hail mary that maybe the bottom end isn’t blown.

    You're absolutely correct and spot on. The Pistons are Shit. The ring groove location changed higher towards the crown, bad idea. The cylinder pressure is harder on it at the crown and they crack, quickly, even stock. A final 2 micron filter is a must. Changing to the 03-04 pistons and Nozzle, will make it last like it should. Polydyne coating also helps. A tuner, is Fun, but is the fastest way to kill this engine if you don't take the preventive measures First. A coolant Bypass kit is available and feeds a line to #6 directly from the thermostat housing, with a new housing that has a port. #6 has an npt plug, and is very easy to install. Donaldson Filters for Oil and Air Especially are good, or Baldwin. Don't use Auto store junk. Use heavy equipment rated brands. Highly Recommended. These are great engines if set up in this manner. You are spot on in your explanation. If you want a long life truck, it's very possible. If you want to kill it, put a tuner on it, a strait brim hat, and square toe boots, and have at it. 👌🤙

    I have an 05 common rail and have a hard start and I have done the block off one at a time did not crank straight up on each block off…did a kill test on my scan tool and each injector I kill didn’t change the tune of the engine…what am I missing

    Thank you Joshawa- Great video and you do a thorough job explaining the problems. I have a 2001 with 256K on it and I noticed the excess blow by a couple months ago- sounds like I’m late responding to the cracked rings. One thing my engine does, and I wonder if you’ve seen this before, when I turn off the engine it gives this odd kind of squeak or maybe a whistle kind of sound. Friends would tell me it’s a good tight engine, but maybe that has something to do with why I’m getting the extreme blow by and why I probably have cracked rings ? I saw your video on dribbling injectors; could a dribbling injector maybe cause a reverse rotation when you shut it down ?

    Question: Im on a fresh rebuild...what position should the crank be, as it takes 2 revolutions for 1 cycle, how do you know you didnt align the crank 180* out of time? So, what position should the crank be in to ensure proper timing?

    When the sun angle is low and hits just right I can see some steam coming out of the oil overflow tube or crankcase tube that hangs down side of the motor. Some steam or puffs out oil cap, but no pressure. 130k miles. Send in for compression check?

    Question I have a 07 ram 2500 5.9 cummins 183,000 miles Having issues starting after i stop and go in a store Truck won't start I give a few squirts of spray silicone and it will start. Truck doesnt smoke or idle rough I put a new in tank pump in November. I am stumped Thanks

    would make way more sense to unplug an injector at a time (like an injector cutout test with a good scan tool, or cummins insite) and you don’t open up the door for an exhaust leak.

    Amp/tuner bad in most cases. Perform fiber optic test and check power and fuses to all components that have fiber optic connections.

    We have that high return no start problem only starts with petrol perfume blocked injector 5 engine started normally didn't tried another one will send injectors to a mechanic to test , clean and adjust them and report back *edit just send them to tester said 4 was clogged and was sending all diesel to return only 2 was working they just cleaned them , now engine working 1 sec after cranking thanks alot your video helped to identify the issue we can't afford changing them right now maybe in future after they fail completely
