Oscar Plays Piano

Oscar Plays Piano

To all the budding and beginner pianists out there! You are not alone! I'm Oscar and began my piano journey at the ripe age of 35. I began learning in December 2021 with no prior experience with the piano, and it's the greatest thing I ever did!

I've now decided to document my progress and adventure. I'll share with you my challenges and successes, sprinkled with a little advice, knowledge and tomfoolery :-) I hope you enjoy my journey and I hope it helps with yours!

I love to help with anything I can so don't hesitate to leave a comment with a question and I'll do my best to answer 👍

    Thank you. My pinky is lifting quite a bit (ascending on the left, descending on the right). I hear many piano instructors say..."Do NOT lift your fingers." So, the lifting of the fingers should be done, first, for strength?

    I’m just starting out on Piano after playing guitar and singing for decades. Do you learn from sheet music? I’m also getting either a Roland fp30x or a Kawai es120 next payday.

    Beautiful playing...I was wondering how you get all your music.. I don't want to pay for every song. I have a ton of paper sheet music and just purchased a tablet. It would cost a fortune to replace my music.

    I would be a bit pissed if it came back more dusty than when i sent it. Dust is the enemy of any digital piano. It gets between the keys and starts to effect the contacts under the rubber strip under the keys. If doing a repair, they should keep it clean when opening, and clean when its packed for return. Glad you got it fixed, but 5/10 Roland for sending it back covered in dust.

    I definitely enjoyed what you do and its so much more authentic being an observer of your progress from humble beginnings, far more interesting than just listening to the polished end result of years of slaving away at the keyboard. So many note perfect players in the world, that imperfections have become more interesting, than perfection.

    Totally agree with you. Getting help from KZread can be frustrating because guidance is fragmented and not structured. I’ve started doing Schmitt Prep Exercises Op. 16 and Hanon and which I’d done it sooner. It saves time with finger dexterity and as you said is not designed to be musical other than aid solid technique. Then you can do Jazz Hanon or make the exercises musical once achieved the desired technique. For all wanting a good KZread series on Schmitt Exercises every morning, I with this piano tutor (via my mobile) play along and I also use it to sightread out loud at the same time. Here’s the link kzread.info/dash/bejne/hqaCqsWzms-3oco.html - it’s helpful and she does every exercise at a beginner pace of three variable speeds before moving to the next exercise, no break. My aim is to be able to follow with her right the way through whilst able to sightread out aloud at the same time before moving onto book two. Hanon is challenging from the get go so I do that after and yes it does make a difference. This is a helpful video because you are offering useful help at beginner level and not help that leaves you without structured future progress, fragmented and frustrated. I will be following your videos as sounds very interesting and helpful. Thank you 😊

    I haven't quite finished the book yet, I'm through exercises 1 to 38, and then it's all the major and minor scales then arpeggios which I'm nearly through 😅 I try to do 1 - 20 every day to get them nailed and up to tempo. I think Hanon are exercises I'll be learning and finessing for the rest of piano career, there is so much to learn 😀 how about you?

    Up to 9 is fantastic! They are really challenging but the payoff is invaluable in my opinion. I'm planning on doing a deep dive video for every single exercise so hopefully I can help with some advice 😀 👍 that's not to say I'm an expert though lol, still learning them myself 😊

  • @tofusauce

    You can manually adjust the tempo on the piano, by holding the metronome button, and entering the number you want on your key and press enter. Should be around the C2 area. You can see the numbers on top of the keys for guidance. This eliminates the needs for the app.

    Thank you, Oscar! You answered perfectly! Like you, I want to read music enough to learn a song, then commit it to memory. I just decided to work on a very easy version of Maple Leaf Rag. I'll keep you posted on that. I'm approaching scales like you. I did white keys first, now working on black keys. Basically working my way around the Circle of 5ths. My years of guitar playing are mostly folk/ chord style playing, with some fingerprinting. Also learning the violin now! Music is keeping me busy! Thank you for your time. Your answers were great as we are on the same journey, and you are a few steps ahead of me. Keep up the good work!

  • @oscarplayspiano
    @oscarplayspiano Жыл бұрын

    Hey Patrick, I just spotted this comment, apologies for the delay! Working around the circle of fifths is such a good idea! I really wish I had gotten into that habit early on, it's something I'm trying to do now but I'm in such a habit of working through scales chromatically, which is no good for promoting and developing theory. Violin!! Wow! My best friend is learning violin, it's so challenging but probably one of the most beautiful instruments (after piano of course ;-) ) Thanks so much mate! You too!!

    How long have you been learning as an adult beginner? I've been off and on learning for a few years now. One of the biggest hurdles is staying consistent with my lesson books that I find super boring 🥲 Based on the progress i make when i manage to stick to it I'm sure I'd have been way further in my journey if I could just be consisten.
