    I knew there was Bonk game that came out in the arcades, but I've never played it. Looks cute. And, yeah, it's far and away the better looking and sounding game. But, I kind of have a soft spot for the NES port of Bonk from the TG-16. I mean, it's not as nice as the TG-16 game, but renting the NES version was my first experience with the series. I thought it was a lot of fun. I haven't played the NES version in ages (I've played the PC-Engine version quite a bit as well as the sequels on the system) and don't own it, but I had fun with it. I'm not sure how the arcade Bonk plays, but I might need to try it out sometime.

    This is a really nice looking NES game and it's pretty unique. The arcade version is really nice but it's the type of game that I think works better at home. I can't imagine doing a platformer with 30 or 40 levels at an arcade. Of course MAME does make that better these days.

    That's a whole lot of games, Bill. Thanks for taking the time to put this together. There's a lot of great games here. I think overall, if there's an arcade version, that's usually the best version. However, it is interesting to see the differences in ports. Usually the 5200/7800/XEGS versions look nicer than the 2600, but you get games like Space Invaders and Galaxian where I prefer the 2600 port. The Lynx ports usually look great for a handheld of the time but, sadly, run poorly. Out of the games I saw when skimming through the time line, I would say my top 5 games out of these versions of games are 1. 7800 Ms. Pac-Man, 2. Arcade Roadblasters (but Lynx version is nice too), 3. 2600 Galaxian, 4. 7800 Commando, 5. Lynx Asteroids. I love Kung-Fu and Double Dragon (one of my top-3 arcade games), but not so much the versions here. Keep up the good work, Bill!

  • @RetroComparisons
    @RetroComparisons2 күн бұрын

    Thanks for watching my friend! The arcade was hard to beat back in the 70s and 80s but I'm with you on the ports of Space Invaders and Galaxian on the 2600. Those are some solid picks for your top 5 and it has me thinking now what my top 5 would be. River Raid is always going to top the list of 2600 for me so that's got to be on there and there were some cool games that I never played before that I really enjoyed like S.T.U.N. Runner and Xybots. I'll have to give this more thought. The real reason I made this video was so I could have an excuse to play another version of my beloved Hard Drivin' as well as featuring your favorite with Klax.

  • @shotgunl
    @shotgunl2 күн бұрын

    @@RetroComparisons Haha. I was going to mention Klax but forgot lol. With Hard Drivin', it might not be much fun in any version, but it was certainly impressive to see back in the arcade version. So, so much smoother than flight sims on my uncle's computer. Rive Raid is a very good pick. I've not played much of S.T.U.N. Runner nor Xybots. Also, Road Riot 4WD isn't the most fun of racers, but I still think it looks amazing for the time.

  • @RetroComparisons
    @RetroComparisons2 күн бұрын

    @@shotgunl Hard Drivin' is actually pretty good on the arcade, I'll give the devil his due there. It's one of those games that should have remained in the arcade though. Gotta hand it to Sega; the jewels look like way better candy than Candy Crush. Considering the original HP UX version was flat squares in bold primaries on a grey background? It's no wonder why everybody rewrites history to skip to the Sega version. Anyways... Other than the shiny graphics, this has to be the least imaginative falling block puzzle game ever made. I mean, it feels like this game was born to check off a box on pirate game collections. But it's also a great gateway title, for those of us who suck at Puyo Puyo and Puzzle Fighter. This was the game that convinced me to give Tetris and Tetris Attack another go, and got me into the genre. It makes me wonder what other games are too basic to be considered genre classics, but can train you for something better?

  • @RetroComparisons
    @RetroComparisons2 күн бұрын

    This isn't really a bad game by any means but I think you're right on the money with calling it basic. The fact it's one of the few Sega games to get a Super Famicom port not mention being ported to every Sega console besides the SG-1000 and 32X makes me wonder how it could have been as popular as it was. If it was a gateway to better games in the genre then hats off to the creators of this game.

    @@RetroComparisons Right game at the right time. Sega was still struggling against Nintendo's illegal 3rd party monopoly, so they developed a knack for getting their own versions of in-demand genres and turning them out at pretty high speed. Firstly, out of the gate, the arcade game is graphically and aurally superior. But, that said, the game does seem to have translated pretty well over to the Master System. I didn't expect it to be different though than the Game Gear port, which a friend's grandma was obsessed with and which my cousin had as well. I'm not sure which is better, but I really like the starfield background in the SMS port. This SMS port is probably not as good as the Genesis port (which I had but only on the 6-pak), but it looks like it would have been fun too.

  • @RetroComparisons
    @RetroComparisons3 күн бұрын

    This is a solid experience but nothing to write home about. Graphically it's really lacking but fortunately that part of it doesn't really matter for a game like this. I guess this must have been that crossover game like Tetris with older generations because back then having a grandma that enjoyed a video game was rare. While this isn't even near the top of my list of favorite puzzle games it's not bad. I think this may be the most ported game on Sega consoles seeing as it got a GG, SMS, Genesis, Sega CD, Saturn & Dreamcast port in one form or another.

    SEGA gave up on the Dreamcast too soon, and I’ve never fully forgiven them for the disappointment they caused their fans. The last SEGA console I owned was the Genesis. When I was considering buying the Saturn, it had a poor reputation, and seeing my friends struggle to find good games made me choose the PSX (Sony) instead. When SEGA announced a new console, I was excited for the Dreamcast, but it was another letdown. To this day, I remain a SONY fan largely because of SEGA's failures. I still have affection for SEGA, but the only way they could make it up to me would be to release another console and support it long-term, like they did with the Genesis. However, that seems like an unrealistic dream.

  • @RetroComparisons
