Hi Gabrielle! Fingers crossed for the cattleya!! I was going to ask the same as Rick about calcium. I recently started giving my plants calcium nitrate and magnesium sulphate fairly frequently and I see a large difference in my plants. First thing I noticed was lots of new roots. Also leaves are firmer on at least some of them. I took the advice that Rick L gives regarding calcium and it seems to make a huge difference. Even if on a couple of plants you could give a small amount of calcium-magnesium daily from say a watering can you would see a difference. I have had many phals with pitted leaves and have lost many that just seemed to dry up . I am giving them calcium now as I don’t think it is a pest problem. I think the pitting is from weak cell structure due to a lack of calcium. I will let you know how that goes. I really think it is well worth a try of really increasing calcium . Enjoyed your video. Looking forward to seeing vanda, cattleya and other blooms! Take care!!

Hello Gabrielle, I just got a Renanthera monachica from Roehampton Orchids. I am very excited, it is bare rooted and I am hesitant to put it in bark. I would like to be able to see the roots so I can monitor it better yet I don't want to have to water it every other day. So when you say that it took you 6 year to get the blooms did you change something as far as you know that helped the plant to bloom?
@gcarson3 ай бұрын
Hey! The only thing I changed was my living environment. The temperature in my old place was more intermediate whereas my current place is very warm. For example, it's only spring now, but if it's sunny and the windows are closed it can get up to 28 in here. It's a warm growing species so it makes sense that it would improve. When the weather warms up, I usually leave water in the tray because I know it'll dry out too quickly. Hopefully that helps :)

Hi gabrielle. You are lucky you managed to find such big sized mini purple and v coerulescens. I remember the day I was trying to get my first cattleya to flower. Now up to 16 that I've flowered but of course there are some, particularly some species I am hoping to flower one day too still. If you ask me you picked some of the trickiest varieties lol. The mini purple is one I have myself and despite getting over a dozen to flower the mini purple is taking its sweet time still. A new channel I have been following calling Ingram's orchids mentioned they can grow every cattleya apart from the mossiae. Not sure about your third one. A bag baby from lowe's will generally flower way before some of these primary species and hybrids you are trying to flower. Ps: the fungal issues are caused by pests if you ask me. I have to deal with them too all the time. Indoors in a living environment you should not be getting fungal problems. What happens if you do is that insects are causing leaf damage which in turn gets a fungal infection. If the leaves don't get damaged then the orchid doesn't pick up a fungal infection. It's the same story with crown rot. It's either caused by overwatering or most of the times insects. It's going to be insects far more than people claiming they mut have left some water sitting in the crown. Just in case you weren't aware. As you know growing orchids is hard enough even when we have the right knowledge. When we get told or believe a problem is not what it is then any remedy we decide to use will not be the right remedy to use. Anyway good luck on the cattleya flowering. I really would recommend a bag baby maybe. Take care.

Hi Tom, thanks for the comments! We don't have bag babies up here so unfortunately I can't get any 😅. Anyway, I'll keep an eye out. Thanks!
