Bethany Community Church

Bethany Community Church

Bethany Community Church is a diverse group of people whose primary aim is to give expression to the hope found in Christ through our life together, our worship, and our service to the world. These elements combine to create an environment where individually, as families, and as a church we can know transformation and better represent the spirit and heart of Jesus.

We're glad you are joining us on this amazing, transformational journey as we draw closer in every way to the real source of joy, hope, and strength-Jesus Christ.

patriarchy, like camels, deserts and romans in togas, is part of the backdrop of the bible not the point of it. pat is a result of the fall and jesus came to fix that. but there seems to be a great big divide between christians. those who believe in male hierarchy, that women should obey submit and be silent and never pastor or preach. But that is not God's will nor what the bible truly says. And it only took Jesus 3 years to teach the 12 disciples how to treat women. They were steeped in OT patriarchy but the saw how the Master treated women, protected, them, healed them, even talked with them. Jesus broke a lot of rules when it came to women. . And since God chose women to be the first to see and tell of the risen Christ it was important that these men believe what the women were saying. Because in those days testimony from women was not allowed. So by the time Jesus died and resurrected, and the woman came to tell what they had seen, 11 of the 12 believed, I think Jesus did a great job in preparing men for how important women would be in spreading the gospel. (Thomas, shame on you!)

I was raised Christian. I never took the Bible literally, the stories were just stories to help you understand things. Now, as an adult, I just can’t support it. I do believe there are those that use religion the “right” way and genuinely live kindly. But for so many, they misinterpret religion as a way of justifying awful behaviors, such as the oppression of non-believers. This woman claims you have to take everything into context. Well, one issue I have with this context is that prior to the spread of patriarchal religion, there were many cultures that reveared female deities too. When Christianity (and other religions) came along, women were painted as demonic, unbalanced, uncontrolled, witches, property, slaves, etc. This may have occurred in earlier cultures too, but patriarchal religion certainly catalyzed these beliefs. Based on my understanding, these founding religious zealots did not show any favor to women. Even the virgins they desired were not treated well, albeit less poorly than those who were seen as unclean/impure/possessed (i.e. disobedient or outwardly emotional/distressed/dissatisfied in some way, I’m assuming). It’s just crazy to me that women, especially, can buy into these doctrines. I understand in many other cultures, women have no choice but to obey. And we do live in a patriarchy here in the US, but we women still have so much more freedom to step away from these destructive beliefs here. We have access to the internet, libraries, higher education… and a quick google search will show you the hypocrisy and bigotry that makes the Bible what it is. I suppose that deeply ingrained fear of hell and a vengeful God has brainwashed people into thinking they’ll suffer for eternity for not obeying “god’s” word, having premarital sex, getting tattoos, smoking weed, choosing not to give birth to an unexpected (and unwanted) child (such as rape victims), etc. It’s just mind boggling to me. I still pray. To the universe, to my deceased loved ones. But I do not believe in a vengeful God, nor do I pray to a giant white guy in the sky. If humans can be capable of boundless and unconditional love, acceptance and patience with their children, why would God be any different? Wouldn’t he do it even better than we can? If this god loses his temper when we “disobey,” doesn’t that make him bound by earthly weakness? If that’s the case, why should I obey this weak and emotionally disturbed figure? If god made us all and makes no mistakes, then did he just make trans, gay, promiscuous people, etc so he’ll have someone to punish? Sounds like a psychopath to me. I am agnostic and have great respect for many Christians I’ve known. But I cannot support Christianity personally. As far as I know, the Bible and all its rules were dictated by violent, conservative, Caucasian, male bigots. As a black, liberal, female, that doesn’t sit well with me.
