My name's Paul and I'm a Reverse Glass Sign Painter from Norwich England.
I created this channel to share all of my techniques for creating ornamental glass signs and mirrors.
From Victorian techniques like Reverse Painting, Glue Chipping and Gold Leaf, to file prep in Industry standard software packages like Photoshop, Illustrator & Vinylmaster.
This channel is aimed at beginners and I want to show that anyone can create beautiful pieces regardless of perceived artistic talent.

Hey Happy Gilder, you haven't released any vids in a while... is everything OK?
Great video!! What kind of paint would you recommend to use on glass, before silvering?
@@marinacarr7010 asphaltum is resistant to the chemicals. Enamel won’t hold up though
@@happygilderThank you. I looked up asphaltum paint because I didn’t know what it was. I only found a colour of paint named Asphaltum. If enamel was paint isn’t appropriate, can you please recommend the type of paint that would be suitable to paint onto glass before silvering? Thank you.
@@marinacarr7010 asphaltum is also referred to as Brunswick Black. It’s oil based paint.
Great work! So, by adding the stroke, you’ve made a female to male die?
@@patriot9560 exactly that :)
What a great video. I happened to be riding on the bus and asked myself "How are mirrors made?" Thanks for sharing your expertise.
How do I dispose of the etching cream thats on the glass ? Is a hose pipe and a plastic bucket ok ? What will happen if i pour it down the toilet or sink ? or drain outside ?
hello. Im doing gilding with copper on glass,, to get an antique mirror effect ,,,, any advise about this material _ is it copper acting the same as gold or silver ,,, thanks !
Can you tell us about antique mirror making methods?
Thanks for explaining all of this
Do you know if this would wear off after washing it if used on drinking glasses?
@@bstessl yes it would wash off eventually.
@@happygilder that's what I figured, thanks for the response!
BEATIFUL!!!
@@mario-gt9gz thanks!!
Please make a two way mirror 🙏🙏🙏
никакое другое вещество кроме плавиковой кислоты HF не способно травить стекло. Ионы фтора присутствуют в пузырьке из других соединений в присутствии воды. Это только рекламный ход для начинающих
Can I double ingredients for a piece of glass 900mmx700mm?
This is such horse shit a guy puts this kinda stuff out there for the world to see and and he had to quit making video cause people would rather watch reaction videos to his videos...yeah that makes sense
Super helpful- THANK YOU!
Glad you enjoyed it!!
Bonjour, j'adore regarder vos vidéo ,très beau travail, cela me donne l envie d apprendre, et d en réaliser aussi

Thanks for watching!! :)
Glad to find your techniques and that you're a Packers Fan! 👍👍
Nice
Thanks!
I've just found you and now realised that you've finished. I am a specialist Decorator and do gilding aswell, but nobody ever shares skills they always gatekeep and the courses cost so much money. Thanks so much for sharing I will be going through them bit by bit. Good luck with your endeavours 😊
Thank you! I’m glad you like the channel :) I’m not ruling out a return, but it won’t be any time soon unfortunately
Please don't take your videos down xx
The videos are staying where they are. I’m glad you’re enjoying them!! 😀
This is amazing. Made my evening finding you. Starting a new job after being off for a bit and so much to buy... Seeing this has made me feel like I could make a few bits like the pad. Think I'd need to make a guard aswell but honestly food for thought ❤
what percentage of silver nitrate do you use
I found your channel in my feed because I have been searching for tutorials on ways to apply gilding to a vintage velvet fabric for a Victorian style keepsake box I will be making for a dear friend. Your work is gorgeous! This piece is very beautiful! So glad I found you, and I subscribed immediately! Thank you so much! Truly inspirational! Lisa
Thank you very much for the kind words, I’m really glad you’re enjoying the videos! I’ve never gilded on fabric before so I don’t have any tips unfortunately, but it sounds like a beautiful project so please share some pics of the finished piece because I’d love to see it :)
i didnt know what scrolls were called for weeks and this popped up and YES YES FINALLY. i was self teaching myself how to make them, so i think i already have a strong start ;p
Glad you found it useful!! :)
Wow! It's stunning! I love it! Thank you so much! Lisa
Thank you!! 🙏
@@happygilder I have to hit the sack now. Goodnight! Have a great day! Lisa
Amazing
Thank you! 🙏
You will be missed Take care and GOD bless
Sorry about the flood. I've enjoyed watching the videos. Thanks.
I understand completely and have learned so much. Good Luck in everything. You deserve the best. Great Teacher!!!
Thank you so much! I've been saving to buy a kit for ages, and I don't know why I never thought that I could make a gilders cushion myself. I have a tip for raised illumination, which is a piece of thin plastic stapled to a piece of cardboard, and it works brilliantly. Not sure how it would work on a larger scale for a full leaf, but great for smaller pieces.

Incredible
@happy gilder excellent video Paul, i was actually preparing to try this method out but with Nazdar 59000 series so that was great insight about the 6100 will give it a go as well. what I am curious about is through this process could you apply hydrofluoric acid to this image you just screened to create an embossed effect version of this piece?
Thank you! If you wanted to acid etch it you'd need to use an acid resistant paint called Asphaltum (Brunswick Black). It would resist the acid and it's removable with white spirit
Thanks very talented, my only criticism is better close ups, surely a talented lady could do that? Take care and it looks nice.
Fascinating thanks.
I'm sorry, but one unrelated question. Etching with hydrofluoric acid requires mica. Is there anything else that comes into consideration instead of mica and can you explain a little about it. Of course, thanks for a lot of ideas and great work.
I have the same question.
Wow!! Magic I love it. Good instructions and all the learning done by you. Thank you.
I have watched your stuff and I think you are a true artist. You do amazing work. I don't think you give yourself enough credit. If I could do a quarter of what you do I would be so happy. Yes this piece is amazing but almost all of your work is amazing.
Thanks very much, I really appreciate the kind words :)
Hi, you mention 'kit' a number of times. Are the chemicals available as a complete kit, if so where does one purchase it, or if individual chemicals, where did you purchase them? How do you remove the old silvering? And how can you tell if the original coating is silver or aluminium oxide? Thanks in advance.
You can by the kits from Angel Gilding. They also sell the chemicals to remove old silver
Indeed beautiful work and most fine craftsmanship you have shown us. Both you and what you create are appreciated. Thanks much!
Thanks very much!!
I use a reptile heat mat for my chipping.
Just found your channel!!! Hit the jackpot! So refreshing to watch a Master at play ❤
Thanks very much, I’m glad you’re enjoying the vids!!
damn sorry to see you go my brother! Hope you’re doing well and thanks for everything
Cheers mate!! 🍻
Can glue chipping be achieved using a diode laser ?
Hello I have watched your video on this but I only have gimp, affinity photo and affinity designer. Would you be able to do a tutorial for any of those?
Sorry I’ve retired from KZread now. If you use Photopea (free online Photoshop copy) you’ll be able to follow the tutorial
@@happygilder oh I’m sorry to hear you have retired from YT, but thank you for your reply and suggesting Photopea. Best of luck for your future.
Maravilhoso trabalho!
Terrific video. You are a great instructor. Question. Can I glue chip tempered glass and the silver it?
Thank you! No you can't chip tempered glass because the glass is stronger than the glue
