  I just beat it today. When I was a kid, I hate that when I died I lost the xp I gained. Also... I vaguely recall going through the mountain maze... so I really didn't get very far in the game.

  Man this is great, I was 14 when this came out in 1988 and I was able to beat it actually pretty easily BUT, it was the first game I played where the ending may as well have been like: “The End.. F off”. Another game like that was Wizards and Warriors which was a pretty damn cool game, quite difficult and the ending was another: “yeah you won, the end….Fk off…start over” 😂 I would give anything to go back to the 80s again and do it all over. Yeah tech today is insane and amazing but back then everything was so much more awesome, and new, and cool…the internet and social media ruined everything

  Pretty good advice but I very much disagree about running from the fokka. You’re likely to just take a bunch of unnecessary hits to the back, especially when there’s stairs to climb. They’re not even that difficult to kill. Just hit them with an up-thrust when they jump and focus on blocking when they’re grounded.

  Yep, this method works. Tracking Jason down can be difficult, but with enough patience and potions, it's not a big deal. I've beaten the game twice, once using something very similar to this technique (I didn't know about forcing Jason outside with councilors). Also, I've heard that only females can wear the sweater, but it looks like anyone can equip it. Now if only Tecmo Bowl were so easy to understand.

  FireGuts, I'm looking at some longplays of Castlevania and in some of them, yours included, there are a bunch of sprites that have a different color palette. The money bag, spear knights, axe knights, mummies, big birds, ecc are blue instead of purple. Why is that? Is a palette thing or a version thing?

  I was always confounded watching my older brother mull through this game, seemingly enjoying it. Now I feel like I can understand why it’s actually pretty fun. It really feels like a great accomplishment to get through a palace and make it back to the town to rest.

  "Run from fokkas" NO. Running from them is just asking to take pointless damage from behind when you're trying to get through a massive dungeon on limited lives. Stand still, let them hop around and shoot at you until they decide to hop over you, then upstab them while they're above you. Practice just a little and you will find that you can fight these guys with very little effort without getting hit. EVERY enemy in Zelda 2 has a way you can beat them without pulling off some crazy stunt. That said, everything else about this video is fantastic.

  Thank you! Im on a Zelda playthrough where i am going through all of the Zelda games in release order. This was my first time playing Zelda 2 and my goal was to beat it without save states with some guidance. This video was perfection, exactly what i was looking for. I beat it yesterday and it was a great experience (thanks to you). As you've obvously put a lot of effort into this video, you deserve to hear how great it was.

  I love Zelda 2. I've beaten all Zelda games to date, except those on the Philips CD-i system. While Zelda 2 is by far the easiest Zelda and one of the simplest NES games, it has always given me the most enjoyment. It was also the first game I ever completed back in 1988 when I was 9 years old.

  11:05 Level 3 Rooftop after first walk up, where you put arrows on screen. This can be easy, if you *inch yourself to the edge.* The raven will come horizontally at you for an easy whipping. Then just *drop down, don't jump up.* The _ghost skull_ never spawns behind you. The skeleton will come when you move forward, also easy kill.

  I don’t like playing this game at all. But I’ve watched the AVGN episode of this game the most, for some reason something about this game is very alluring and I love the music and atmosphere. Idk it’s weird it’s just a certain type of mood I can’t explain that this game puts me into.

  Personally I think it's because a horror franchise marketed to kids, which gives it a really interesting vibe. Objectively it isn't a very good game and doesn't do itself any favours by not really explaining itself well even with the manual. But it does have a mood

  I never played this game before (or any CV game) and right away I looked up how to use sub-weapons, then everything was going great until level 4. I got my ass handed to me multiple times on my way to the boss, then I gave up. I later found out online that the red goblin thing couldn't be killed, so all this time, I never actually hit the boss! Still couldn't beat it and that's where I found you! Holy Water strat worked like a charm and I haven't watched the video past that since I want to try as much as possible on my own.

  GREAT VIDEO! I learned a lot. A couple tricks I have learned elswhere. 1) You can do the bat trick to avoid going downstairs on stage 02. You can also use it to skip some areas of the Grim Reaper stages, using bones instead of bat. 2) If you whip the giant bats quickly on stage 16 they wont fly at you. 3) If you hit Dracula and get hit by him at the same time he takes a massive amount of damage. If you are lucky and good, You can use the boomeramg (its a boomerang, not a cross btw, there is an actual cross in the game!)and time it right you can kill him fast then get the holy water with a good chance of getting a II for Cookie Monster.

  I build up to attack level 4 and leave health and magic at 1 for death mountain. You can farm Octorocks in the swamps for 40-50 exp per encounter. So farming for level 4 attack is minimal. Since the respective meters replenish upon leveling, you will get about 3 refills of each which is incredibly helpful in death mountain. The level 4 attack makes the axe gators a bit more manageable. Another helpful tactic is to only collect the item from the palaces and then move on. Beating the bosses does absolutely nothing for game progression until you need to access the final palace. So save the boss fights until you have 6 levels left to gain. Then you can just kill the bosses for the final 6 most expensive levels. This also makes the bosses stupidly easy since you'll be over powered when you finally go to farm them. Save the Link dolls (except the one in palace 6) until you're ready for the final palace. Using them anywhere else is a waste. You'll get to the final palace with 8 lives allowing you to tank your way to the Thunderbird. Use shield, jump, and Thunder on it. Aim for its headdress. Cheese Shadow Link by putting your back to a wall, ducking, and stabbing. Congrats you've beaten Zelda 2 easy peasy.

  Back in the 90’s, as a teenager, I attempted to beat this game once and for all on the original NES. I had made it past the 6th palace, which was easier said than done in the days before internet help. I went to turn on the game one day and all my progress was lost. I thought that the cartridge internal battery failed. Then, I found out my mom let her friends small child play it when I wasn’t home. That kid erased my profile. I was so pissed I didn’t play the game for about 20 years. Good memories! 🤣
