That roofline looks good for aero, so may have a better top speed than a Cortina. Good for British NASCAR racing or Le Mans, but too heavy for circuit racing !!

One day in 1962 my neighbour turned up in a brand new Capri in white. I was seven years old and completely mesmerised by everything about the car. It was the most beautiful car I had ever seen. It still irritates me when I hear Ford refer to the the stub tailed 1970’s Capri as the ‘Mark 1’. This is the Mark 1 Capri! No one ever called it a Consul Capri. It was ‘the Capri!’ If they still made them I’d buy one.

Lotus would not have touched the Consul Capri. As you have already pointed out it was a ‘50s design and being made from much heavier grade steel than later cars was much heavier than either the Cortina or Corsair that followed it. Colin Chapmen hated weight and would not have put his name to any car as heavy as that. Those people who think that all you need to do to change a Ford to its Lotus equivalent is a bit of paint and a few badges need to think again. Even adding Lotus suspension and a twin cam engine won’t do it, the car needs to be pared back to be as light as possible. The Consul Capri was never a contender, it was simply vastly overweight.

The camera operator didn't seem interested in co-ordinating with the narrator. I really couldn't see where the batteries were going because I didn't know where Nick was wrt the chassis. One battery at the front , balancing out the driver's weight, yes, so approximately next to the driver? Inboard or outboard of the passenger? One at the back, but in front of, behind, or over the axle? This decision will presumably have considerable impact on the handling.

Absolutely love your Zephyr ...We had a 1961 Mk 2 Zephyr bought brand new by my uncle here in Australia .. It was two tone grey ..155ci six . Three on the tree . Heavy duty interior in blue and white . We had it after my uncle and Dad sold it in the mid 1980s . I learned to drive in it . Only fault was the terrible turning circle..No three point turns , more like a five or six point turn ..Otherwise a great car ..Ford fan and since then owned three Escorts , a Ford Telstar TX5 Ghia only sold in Australia and New Zealand and a few Australian Ford Falcons ..Have a 2001 AU ll Futura and a 2008 FG XR6 now.. Love them both..

The Capris were all a bit of a joke. The Consul Capri was a nice looking car but had a 0-60MPH time of 22.6 seconds. The second type of Capri were bought by people who though they were driving a mini Mustang. Myself and four of my mates all had a Mini Cooper S at the time and used to laugh at Capri owners. The only one that came anywhere near being a sports car was the 3000cc meodel and even that wasn't that quick. I later had a Lotus Cortina Mk II which was OK but not as much fun as the S.

An 1100 mk1 was given to me by a mate,in Berlin, back in 1980. Even though it was well knackered, my previous car had been a Morris Minor so the Escort felt like an F1 car compared with the Moggy. Totally reliable too even through that trying 1980/81 winter when it got down to minus 25 °C in Berlin.

I had a white Classic Capri. I also had a dark blue standard Classic. Loved them both. All leather seats. Still looks the part. Ford obviously wanted to sell the Cortina. (Probably more profit) So the Classic had to go. I'm a retired mechanic and the boss at work (chemical engineer) ask me to do a rebuild on his Classic. At home without lifting gear, I part stripped the engine in situ and lifted it out by hand. Then finished the strip while the engine was still warm. Regrind, rebore, pistons, timing chain, gaskets, clutch etc. Total cost at the time £35. Those were the days.

If Ford can do to the new Capri what they’ve recently done to the new Puma Hybrid ‘Rally 1’ WRC car then in the world of motorsport it could be more pleasing in a similar 3 door version. But as a street car it’s just not the same… I’m sure they’ll sell though.

THE MkI Cortina was the best looking, and coolest, car Fords ever made. My MkI Cortina GT, #3 off the production line, was a rare 4 door version, in Monaco Red. My MkI Lotus Cortina was, simply, the very best car I have ever had with a Ford badge. It didn't match up to my Renault 5 Turbo 2, which was the same Monaco Red as my GT, and was the very best, most satisfying, car I have ever had, period. Closely followed by my Renault 5 Gordini Turbo. And the 2001 SEAT Arosa, 1.4 Turbo, was a very cool car, looked a bit like a miniature BMW. I preferred the shape of the Consul Classic, with the cut-back Anglia slanted rear window. Now that would look great in the Lotus colours. Nice to see you pronouncing coupé correctly, and not calling it a "coop", which is a place for chickens. But those "over there" always get things wrong! My coolest self-build was changing a Prefect 100E into a 107E, from an 1172 side valve, to a 1498 OHC Anglia engine, from a 3-speed box to a 4-speed with o/d on two top gears, from vacuum operated wipers to electric twin speed, and, finally, a low-ratio rear axle, lowered by just 7 cms, Discs all round, overtook a Mustang, on the A40, going past Northolt Aerodrome. A real Q car.
