    Did you portage around Double Drop?

  • @wolfriveroutdoors
    @wolfriveroutdoors5 ай бұрын

    Yes, we all portaged Double Drop on river-right (except for Kirk). The temperature was around 20-22 degrees that morning, and we didn’t want to risk a bad experience at the end of an incredible trip. Double Drop is located about one mile above the take-out at Barnett Bridge. It can sneak up on paddlers due to a blind turn just before the approach. It’s a tricky class III with some undercut rocks river-left and below. Scout accordingly if you decide to 🔥 it 🆙

    Couple of good rolls. Congrats on those. I would recommend waiting until you can reach over the top of the wave on Double Reactionary before throwing that left boof stroke. On Accelerator, you really have to work at it if you want to stay on the green tongue. I ran this river twice during WoR this year. The first day, I fell off the tongue at Accelerator, but managed to stay upright. The second day, I nailed the line and missed the bottom hole completely. Hard left angle and aggressive paddling on that rapid yields the best results. Congrats on the PFD. It really is a fun river to run.

    My friend Ernie came with me to the Boy Scoout jamboree. We were leting scouts kayak in a lake. Ernie had no experience. Before the jamboree started I taught him kayak strokes and during the week worked with him on a roll. After 10 days straight we got in a lot of lake paddling. On the way home we stopped and did the Hiwassee. He did great, but on his first attempt to surf a wave he flipped over and never tried to roll. OK finished the river, the next day the middle Ocoee. Snuck down the river, did a buddy up on table saw, and he survived the Ocoee. At least the water is warmer than the Nantahala on the Hiwassee.

    Very cool and well done. You put in at Window Cliff road? Any kind of flow info or stick gauge anywhere that is useful? Any other significant hazards other than the Falls you portaged and the big strainer?

  • @wolfriveroutdoors
    @wolfriveroutdoors Жыл бұрын

    Yes, we put-in at the small bridge on Window Cliffs Road. It takes some rain to get rockin but will hold fairly well during the winter. Be sure to check for wood around the tight corners. Best to portage the Falls on river-right. Also, be on the lookout for the cables that hikers use to cross the creek (you can use your paddle and lift them up). I’d love to get back on this run with a bit more water than we had that day. It is incredibly beautiful in there (very remote also). 🔥🔥it⬆️ SYOTR🫡🛶🌊

    Absolutely, Sean! The Hiwassee River is an excellent place for an introduction to whitewater and to practice skills from beginner to advanced. Lots of folks rent tubes and float down the river in the summer, too. The mountain scenery and camping options are plentiful in the area as well. Get out there and enjoy!
