  It didn't break. It has a gear that engages when the torque/weight on the arm reaches a set threshold. That's why you hear a ratcheting sound, it prevents the arm from snapping or bending. I'm sure too much of this will eventually wear out the teeth on the gear, so it's probably not good to do a lot and thus the weight limit. These rides would have a very short lifespan if they broke from exceeding the weight limit just one time.
