My name is Paul and Wobbly Runner Exploring is bit of exploration, adventure and a lot of fun making videos. I mostly like exploring old, disused and abandoned things - lost railways, old canals and anything remotely interesting with a bit of history.
Disused railways are my bread and butter. You'll also find my enjoying my favourite filling of the Chesterfield Canal and following it's canal restoration.
From time to time you'll see me enjoying a nice relaxing walk with my dog, either local to North Derbyshire, Sheffield, the Peak District, or wherever our travels take us.

Great video that, very informative and the drone footage definitely complemented it. Looking forward to part 2 😉
So much drone footage, I might release a seperate video
Interesting video Paul, great work. You finally got the LD&ECR part 1 & 2 Chris Booth books for Christmas then :)? Looking forward to a next video to Shirebrook or Langwith and maybe more videos to complete the sections to Tuxford/ Fledborough Viaduct? Though I recall you previously covered my local part of the route (Clipstone).
Cheers Steve. Yeah plenty more possible LDECR videos there. Did you see the videos from Fledborough last year?
@@WobblyRunner Hi Paul, saw the Fledborough video last year. If you remember I recommended the Chris Booth book in replies. I've used Fledborough Viaduct several times cycling to Lincoln.
Great video Paul, it was certainly a well engineered line. I wonder if the line had been completed in full if it would still have been open or would Bolsover tunnel have done for the entire line. There was also to have been Britain's highest viaduct on the route near monsal head that may have caused issues
That's a really interesting questions. Part of me thinks a line from Chesterfield over towards Manchester might not have survived the great rationalisation. I often think what that line would be like. Just cant imagine it passing some of the locations like Monsal Head. Im sure we would have had a few more interesting sections of disused railway in Derbyshire to enjoy exploring though :)
@@WobblyRunner another thought I have is, would it have been electrified along with woodhead or even instead of it. It could have made Notts and Derbyshire coal easier to supply Lancashire rather than Yorkshire
It still disgusts me that we threw this line away
A slightly closer view of Duckmanton tunnel can be seen here at circa 25.00 kzread.info/dash/bejne/imeMz6OfldOqdJc.html
Great stuff. I watched the Bolsover tunnel videos a while ago. Certainly more brave than me in those small spaces but great to see it documented :)
Really enjoyed this, thank you, looking forward to you crawling through Bolsover tunnel in the next one 😂
😄 haha more chance of cheerleading for the Harlem Globetrotters. Glad you enjoyed the video MrH
I'm looking forward to that but it might be one of the last things I ever do.
@@eggy77 @eggy77 I'll let you take the camera in
Hello, nice video, great nature, beautiful place, thank you for sharing, friendly like, good luck and all the best, 🥰🥰🤗🤗😍😍
Very interesting. I live right next to the line in Spital (my house was in the film) and walk up (or down, depending on energy levels) Dingle Lane at least twice a week. I'd only really ever seen the remnants up to Dark Lane. It certainly makes me want to do a bit of exploring now that I know there are more remnants nearby. As for the land levels around Arkwright, it's not really surprising as they were open-casting that even when I moved up from the south in the late 90s. Keep up the good work.
The bridge on Hady Lane was pretty high and we used to dare each other to walk the top of the wall. Also there was a group of railway houses at Dingle bank ,on the right just before the bridge.Dave.
I'm relatively young, and local, and I like the canal. I'd be particularly interested if we could get it connected to the rest of the system.
Interesting little "scalloped" wall on your right leading up to the shed too. I wonder what that was.
Must catch up on the rest in this series. It's not a line that I knew at all...but well remember going to the fabulous Bolsover Castle, so loved those opening drone shots. That first bridge was so impressive, and the scale of the cuttings was something indeed. So little of the impressive structures still in the landscape, but quite a few remnants still hanging on. Nice Hamblet 1893 stamp on the engineering brick too!
👍 It's quite an intruiging line. As you say, not a lot of structures left, but plenty of bits of bridge remains hidden away or randomly left behind. I think I prefer the ones where there's a bit of work, imagination and mystery 😄
The bridge under Dark Lane had two large arches for the tracks, just weird how they left one side of the top part and not the other heading towards the tunnel. It's a 5 minute walk from my house, had I lived in those times I'd have seen steam as trains ran out the tunnel 😅 It's hard to get your head around the different levels, as it seems wrong that a bridge went "over" the road on Bolehill towards Calow colliery. Dingle bridge is probably the only visible jewel of that line in the area, but your drone footage helped put it all into perspective. Good video both Pauls 😎
Cheers Lee. Glad you enjoyed it. Would love to have seen the bridges. I wonder if the bridges are still under the infill on Dark Lane?
Great video gents. Thanks
Our pleasure!
It's amazing how well hidden some of the old lines are now. Excellent tour, Pauls 👍🏻
Cheers Mark. You'll be looking our for old bricks on your runs now 😄
@@WobblyRunner 😄👍🏻 guaranteed!
Pretty sure I had a poke about in Duckmanton tunnel 15 years or so back, the east portal was flooded, but accessible via the nature reserve opposite the old entrance to Arkwright Colliery. Also, don't tell someone from Langwith Junction they're from Shirebrook, them's fighting words. 😂😋
Hahaha cheers for the tip. I assume there's a divide just north of Shirebrook 😄
Have you ever tried to do a video on the old Hasland Locomotive shed site?. I'm not sure if there is anything left or if the site is even accessible but you would by the man to tell us. Keep up the good work.
👍 Ah yes Hasland. I did do a bit of lookup online and concluded there wouldnt be much to see from where you can access. I've not been down in person though.
Calow Main Colliery
I grew up in Hady, so this is not new but so good to see. Hady Lane bridge was filled in with old cars and other waste. I can point you towards photos of the line in situ round there.
Wow, old cars? They really just threw anything in back then didnt they. Cheers Simon.
@@WobblyRunner You won't believe what else lies beneath the surface up there! Hady (hader) is a mining term for step in the land. The area is littered with old bell pits. The primary school I attended is near the trackbed and built where slate was mined.
Yes their was a train museum , it was originally at Newton Chambers site Chapletown they ask to move down near Medowhall before the train line was moved. There was talk abot using the old line to run steam trains and diesel trains, my lad use to go down and help a chap who had a diesel train called Mick , got to be 34 yers ago.
The reason there are no viaducts will be the lack of large timbers to create supports for large arches and there are plenty of sources of limestones of all sizes that can be manhandled. There are some arches under but only small and within the sizes of available local timber resource growing in the valleys to the north.
Why on earth would a deisel shunter go to prison in Doncaster? Love the mk1 brake van, but it seems odd that a mk 2 passenger coach was purchased as it is totally out of character.
How far is the Headstone Tunnel roughly if walking from Bakewell town centre? Don’t want to do the full walk because I’ll be with the family so would ideally want to walk to that tunnel and back. Thanks
It's a while since I've done that, but I'd estimate 6-7 miles return. Obviously a few more if walking through the tunnel. Great walk though.
That place is simply breathtaking.
Beautiful isn't it
I walked that over two days out and this video brought back great memories of each location. Thank you! Hope you get to the next stretch from Bolsover to Langwith Junction as that was the most interesting imo!
Cheers Jon. I'm looking forward to that next section 👍
Don’t miss the Bolsover tunnel portal remains at the west side like I did. I found the site of one air shaft and the intact second air shaft. Great day out in the mist and cold!
That is beautiful ❤
Full video coming in the next week 😉
That is an impressive bridge behind you Paul. Very interesting walk & lovely old blue bricks! & more imposing bridges. Huge cuttings as well as shown in the old colour photograph. Arkwright Town is familiar i think Ant from Trekking Exploration did a video from there. Its hard to get your yead round all those lines & bridges now just open farmland with just a few blue brick bridge walls & infilled underneath. Did i see some railway duamonds on the old last but one photograph of Bolsover Station? Think i did! Fab again Paul see you on the next one. ❤😊👍
Great stuff. Cheers Carol. It's amazing how many big pieces of infrastructure have been lost on this line. The thought of that viaduct blows me away every time
Like many holidaymakers in this beautiful countryside I was able to travel on the lines round here as a teenager, great holiday!
Nice one Tony. Some memories there to cherrish
Well done!
Good to see the spans being replaced "like for like", but not that the swivel mechanism was cut up. Surely it should have gone to a local museum for a clean-up and display. Nice walk in a lovely peaceful spot.
Must have been a great train ride, but you'd need one of the rare sunny days!
Am never around when a 68 is running 🙁
Great little video paul , glad you managed to catch me at last. Last day of diversions is tomorrow
👍 what a great noise. Was over too quickly though 😄. And cheers for timing it just as it started hammering it down 😉
@@WobblyRunner It was good under the roof at York . Bloody hammered down for most of the journey to Newcastle
You're just a hooligan 😄 Does the 68 have automatic wipers?
@@WobblyRunner 🤣
@@WobblyRunner it just has fast slow and intermittent, they are electric all other locos I've driven they are air operated
Many thanks for the video. Like yourself I love Barmouth and especially the estuary I holidayed in Arthog a little way down the estuary and used to kayak down the estuary many times whilst on holiday. Keep up your good work.
Thanks Brian. We've just returned from another stay in arthog.
If someone wanna look on google maps: maps.app.goo.gl/PtZLHXxry6SGxcr47
Been there a few times to Cwm Prysor , a stunning view it about 50 mins-1 hour drive for me there is some stunning viaducts in the area i'm to to far from the Dee valley you have the Pontycystlle aqueduct and the railway viaduct over the River Dee , which is the Wrexham railway line. Great video
Cheers Shaun. You've got some beautiful places. Love the variation from the coal and heavy industry in the east to the slate in the west. Spoilt for choice.
Shame you used so much wide angle zoom
Wow incredible 👍👍🫣
👍
Wow, nice, never knew anything still existed.
Full video of the carriage coming soon. There's also a few surviving in Skegness on the Lincolnshire Coast Light Railway.
A beautiful viaduct I didn't know about. I don't suppose the line could be resurrected in any way which is a great shame as it passes through some lovely wild landscapes. Great structure though, thanks for sharing.
Such a shame. A section of the line further up was lost to a reservoir scheme, which will put pay to any possible future reopening. But there has been attempts to resurrect it from the north.
Nice views and good scenery always a good video.
Cheers Chris.👍🙂
One of the most stunning videos you've made, great photography and drone shots. Beautiful.
Thanks very much Daniel.
Thank you for the unique short video. Very picturesque views to gaze at. Enjoy your weekend, Paul and hopefully see you on the next. 🇬🇧👍🙂🇺🇸
Thanks Martin. It's spectacular isnt it. Enjoy your weekend. Take care.
It looks stunning now but just imagine how great it would have looked when the trains were still running.
Yeah such a shame. Especially working hard up the gradient.
We could see this viaduct from where we stayed at Plas Blaenddol at Llan Ffestiniog
It would be fantastic if this line could be reopened as an extension of the Conwy Valley Line to enable the running of TfW mainline trains from Llandudno through to Bala and a park & ride station at Bala Junction. For railtours it would be like a Welsh 'Settle & Carlisle'.
It sure would be. It doesnt sound like Bala want anymore visitors judging by the extention plans of the Bala Lake Railway. It's a shame they flooded the line with the reservoir too further up.
Be great if the Ffestiniog Railway could extend over that viaduct!
It sure would.
@@WobblyRunner Could you imagine three heritage railway all liking up at Bala? Ffestiniog, Bala Lake and Llangollen? How awesome would that be? A new alignment would be required to get the FR to Bala as Llyn Celyn has flooded to the old one.
As others have said would love to see more along this line.
My appetite is moistened. Im going back in 2025 for a few weeks, so I will get out up there a bit.
Fantastic viaduct Paul, great video, railways across Wales certainly had the hatchet treatment! Just like the rest of the UK. Thanks 🙏🏻 👍🏼
Hi Julian. Hope you're well. Been enjoying seeing the photos of the wagons arriving at Fimber. Look forward to getting over again this year. You're right though. It was sparse for lines around there before they closed it, but virtually nothing now.
@@WobblyRunner Great Paul, Box looking coming along and looking good too, new shed build starting in July, look forward to seeing you when you come over 👍🏼
Loving the positive news
Always great to see footage of this lovely line. It would make a cracking heritage railway.
Would be perfect having Welsh Highland Railway from Caernarfon to Porthmadog, change over at the same station to the Ffestiniog Railway to Blaenau Ffestiniog, and then the possibility getting train from there along this new line. My Dad was part of a group that was looking to revive as a Heritage Railway but it failed due to lack of funding. And they are looking at re-opening the Tanygrisiau Nuclear Power Station so that would likely hinder it also.
@@benabel7326 I knew it had failed but I thought a new group were getting somewhere with it, starting on the Ffestiniog station site What a shame. They have talked about building another power station there for years. Don't know why they can't have both.
@levelcrossing150 The new group cleared out a lot of the overgrowth on line around Blaenau a couple of years ago, but I think it has regrown a lot (I haven't been up since September. The last proper news I heard was that they were carrying out a survey at the former Llan Ffestiniog Station over rebuilding the site. I'm sure stuff probably has gone on since, just no real mention on their Facebook/KZread accounts. I think their plan at the moment is more over the line to Trawsfynedd rather than along the viaduct stretch.
Nice one Ben!!
Yeah such a shame. Along with the Dolgellau line. Bike blank on the maps when looking at the rail maps these days.
