Ewell Acres

Ewell Acres is Rooted in Nature.

Rooted in Nature means taking examples from nature to more sustainably produce crops through a method called hydroponics. That knowledge was gained from years of experience and collaborative learning from around the world.

Our primary goal Rooted in Nature focuses on time tested sustainable agriculture techniques and combing them with modern technology to make them more efficient.

Come and join us as we want to share that knowledge with you. Aside from hydroponics were going to be talking about various aspects of gardening and agriculture. Not just these aspects but how to employ them in as sustainable and natural method as possible so that we all can be Rooted in Nature.

Subscribe and join us so that we can all learn from each other and with each other on how to take time tested sustainable methods of agriculture and employ them with modern technology.

    That’s ok. Some come like that. It means they’re still dormant which is a good sign. You have a bit of time to plant them. If they come with leaves you need to get them planted out as asap.

    Ok, you mentioned that you can get the roots out of dormancy by soaking in water up to a couple of hours. If you DON'T soak them and put them immediately in the ground, pots or whatever you plant them in, does that kill them?

  • @ewellacres
    @ewellacres2 ай бұрын

    No it does not. It will just take them a little longer to come out of winter hibernation. By soaking them that just helps to speed up the process.

    I will say that we stored bare root strawberries in the fridge because we were headed out of town for a week. Unfortunately, the fridge got down to freezing while we were gone & we lost them all. I think them waking up with warmth is better than risk of freezing, myself.

    so close.. you covered almost every base. you just left out how much POLLUTION is caused by rinsing (most of) the salt out of the coco coir before shipping. IF it was just used locally there would be no issue, but its not.. its being shipped all over the world.its not like you can rinse salt out of something with water that already has salt in it.

    I got mine and didn’t have a place for them ready yet. I forgot about them on the counter in the original bag for 3 days and then opened them and put them in the fridge in that original bag. There was no newspaper or moisture in the bag at all. I didn’t know there was supposed to be. About 5 days after I got them, I planted them straight into their spots. Without soaking or washing them, without any fungicide. The next morning the little stems on them changed from pale color/white color to reddish purple color and looked stronger already after just one night in the dirt. I’m a bit worried now 😅 but hoping since they perked up that some of them will survive. Also it was hard for me to get them planted right at the crown, some have a bit of root showing up top. I’m not sure if I should add more soil or compost, because I worry about it covering the crowns 🫣

    Like other fuels, burlap will smolder, inside your smoker much longer if you get a good fire going in the bottom first, and then add more burlap to it and pack it fairly tightly as you continue to pump the bellows. When it's fairly tight and full, see how long it burns for you!

    @ewellacres 9 months ago I like ordering my strawberries from several different locations and have had good luck with all of these locations not in any particular of most to least. these are by no means the only places these are just places I have more experience with. www.johnnyseeds.com/fruits/strawberry/strawberry-bare-root-plants/ www.indianaberry.com/ www.noursefarms.com/category/strawberry-plants/ www.starkbros.com/ As far as the time of year to plant the best time is in early spring when the ground is workable but still cold outside. While the plants are still dormant with no leaves on them. That way they can wake up with the with the warmer temps. Or plant them in fall several months before winter so that can get established before harder cold temperatures arrive. Those are best times to plant.

    great video! question , can strawbrries be grow year round in a green house??

  • @ewellacres
    @ewellacres4 ай бұрын

    Yes. They can be grown year round in a greenhouse. The prolblem your going to run into. Strawberries require a cold period of time in order for them to set fruit. This is know as chilling period of time. What commercial greenhouse growers will do is one of two things. Once the strawberries ate done setting fruit they will then collect the strawberry plants and put them in a refrigerator or cold storage for 6 to 8 weeks. Then replant them and start all over.

  • @ewellacres

    several forms of calcium that can be added naturally are bone meal, lime, and eggshells. Eggshells tend to moths to break down though and so that is a long term inprovement of calcium where as bone meal and lime are much faster acting materials to add.

    What would happen if you throw the clippings in without drying them out?

  • @ewellacres
    @ewellacres4 ай бұрын

    As the grass clippings dry out they produce heat just like another compost pile. That heat can be so much it can kill the plants. Another potential problem but even more dangerous for the plants is nitrogen. As the plants dry out they will release nitrogen. If they release to much all at once it will be called nitrogen burn. That is a term used to denote too much nitrogen all as once. So when I say heat that could mean temperature, but it is also a slang gardening term refuring to that nitrogen burn. The idea behind it is all plants need nitrogen. but to much all at once can be very dangerous to the plant. Very similar to the idea that we as humans need water, but to much water will drown us and kill us. same concept. its finding the right balance.
