Welcome to the "Ultra Athlete with Asthma" KZread channel! I'm Jonny Havey, and I'm not just an athlete; I'm an ultra runner and endurance athlete with asthma.
If you've ever wondered, "Can you be an athlete with asthma?" I've been there too. As a dedicated soccer player in my youth, my inhaler was a constant companion on the field. But a pivotal moment came when a new doctor encouraged me to strengthen my lungs. This propelled me to explore the majestic heights of Colorado's 14ers, where I began my journey into endurance sports and yoga.
This channel is where I share my lifelong discoveries about thriving as an athlete with asthma. From invaluable training tips to managing asthma during workouts, I'm your ultimate resource for all things "ultra," "athlete," and "asthma."
Don't forget to hit "Subscribe" and If you have questions or experiences to share, drop a comment. Together, let's prove that asthma is no obstacle for the unyielding determination of an ultra athlete! 🌟🏆

Umm. U shouldn't need to teach ur dog how to swim
Agreed. Ultimately we are teaching our dog to swim back to the paddleboard instead of swimming to shore if she falls off the paddleboard.
it really is cool how they just know 😭 i teach kids to swim and boy i wish they even half the instincts dogs do for swimming
Its super cool how intuitive it is for them. What we are doing is teaching our dog how to ultimately swim back to the paddleboard instead of swimming to shore if she falls off the paddleboard.
@@Athletewithasthma that’s smart my dog is really 50/50 when he falls off the board half the time he swims back to us and the other half he makes the long shot back to shore 😭
Better than the owner already lol
Right on.
I posted this on your other asthma video but it seems more applicable here: I have exercise induced asthma. Prior to my diagnosis my chest would hurt so much when trying to run I thought it was my heart. Turns out it was my bronchial tubes contracting (or expanding I don't remember) You can kind of train out of it though. It bothers me far less when I'm in better shape. My chest rarely hurts now though I generally take a puff or two of albuterol prior to my run. Also I have to limit what I eat before a run. I don't know why but it has an effect. I now run in the morning on an empty stomach.
And I will add my comment here as well. This is great advice. Thank you for sharing your experience. I agree, I find that sometimes if I eat too much before a run it can create some added pressure and really just caused my lungs to have less space to expand into. With that being said, as an ultra runner I have to eat all the time while running so I am glad that it doesn't bother me when I eat smaller quantities.

Epic
Let’s go!!!!!
Looks like you’ve got a couple hundred miles to go 😂
Bro should do this every day 😮
Heck yeah. Been a goal of mine for awhile. I usually like to run places within 7 miles, but was feeling sick so I jumped on my bike. I think I’m going to start biking to commute much more frequently now.
How far did you go
8 miles.
Schwin win
Love the pun.
Love this music! Perfect!
Lets go!!!!!!
really valuable and underrated channel. i myself have exercise induced asthma and want to start jogging. i am supposed to inhale salbutamol before every run but science says your body will get used to it, thereby diminishing its effectiveness. so i still need to figure out the right medication
Thank you for your encouragement! Definitely share with your friends if you are finding the channel valuable. I can’t give advice. I can share what I have done though. Instead of taking my inhaler before running I always have it with me and would use it when I feel like I needed it while running. And then increased my intervals of not using it over time. And focus on your exhale breathe. Stay safe.
@@Athletewithasthma Thank you very much for this advice. Cant wait to start jogging. Lets fight asthma until AI finds a cure xD
Yes let’s do it!
Be thankful for strong legs heart lungs and beautiful path
Yes! Agreed. I am grateful for my healthy body.
I hear ya
That my good who are more holy and the beautiful side of such a heart that’s unconditionally unharmed
Seriously. Life take patience. Especially the most important and best parts about life.
Started running in 2020. Took me a year to learn how to run with asthma. Got COVID in 2022. Since then, I was never able to breathe the same way while running. Your video helped me to relearn how to breathe while running. Thank you!
Wow this is amazing news! So glad I was able to help. So glad you are able to run and get out there. Definitely keep me updated on what you are up to with your running goals:)
WOW😮
Appreciate the excitement haha
Sugar is micro and the alcohol is macro? These people have no idea what they are talking.
Thanks for sharing
Sugar is a carbohydrate. Which is technically a macronutrient. You are correct in saying that it is a macro. Our point isn’t in saying that sugar isn’t important. We are saying to look at your “carbs” instead of just your sugar intake. Focusing on sugar is one aspect of your total carbohydrate intake. That’s what we are trying to convey. Thanks for your input.
Love the glass board format! Good insights! ty
You are so welcome!
Awesome video! Thanks for breaking this down so well! Alcohol has absolute no benefit for your body. I have no idea why it’s advertised on TV 😅
Thank you. Robbie is the man! And yes it is crazy how engrained into society alcohol has become and it literally is a poison we put in our bodies.
Robbie and I have a videos all about it coming out soon

Amazing!!
Thanks for your nice comment:)
this is cool
I tried to get into running many times before, but when I started doing it with a reason behind it, I fell in love with running. Now I do it to commute as well.
PLEEEEEEASE make sure you spend good money for good shoes if you are a runner. IT WILL ALMOST ALWAYS BE WORTH IT. Have a shoe shop fit you if you can. There are tons of reasons, but your knees are number one. Running on hard impact surfaces with bad shoes can be really bad for your legs. There are so many sad stories from runners who thought they were fine powering through. YOU ARE NOT INVINCIBLE.
I'm just a random guy scrolling by.
Appreciate you sharing this wisdom with everyone. I personally have been running with Altras for the past 2-3 years and go through 3-4 pairs a year (300-500 miles per pair depending). Once my current Altras are ran through I am switching brands to either Topos, Speedlands, or Hokas for better support since Altras aren't serving my feet like they used to.
Love the message 🎉
Thank you. It is really important to me.
Give the doggo a good pet for me please
hahaha definitely will. She apprecaites your comment.
It’s amazing up there
Love the views!
Amazing! Your enthusiasm is contagious!
Greatly appreciate your support:)

Congrats on 180 subscribers! 🎉 Great video for those with and without asthma. When I moved to Colorado, it was quite an adjustment, to this day, I run out of breath if I run uphill for a long time. Thank you for this video!
Thank you soooo much. Living in Colorado is a cheat code for running anywhere else though haha
Bro ran more than a wolf 💀 “they run 20miles”
lets go! Always wanted to be a wolf.
Who cares
- Sadistic guy treated like sh by his parents
-a person that sit all day In his room and treats his body poorly
@@Tugielugie it's about as interesting as someone who posts what they are eating. Nobody cares what your exercise routine is, what you eat, or your daily commute to and from work. Wish these peoples videos would stop showing up on my feed. Nobody cares!!
That is weird that they are showing up in your feed. I would recommend to stop commenting on them if you dont want them to show up because by commenting - even rude comments - you are telling the youtube algorithm to show you more.
@@Athletewithasthma I did not know that. Thank you.
In those shoes I would never
Ive ran 1000s of miles in Altras and while they used to be great ultra running shoes, I am in the process of switching to Topos, Hokas, or speedland shoes.
dude, I’m so jealous of your view.
It is amazing out here:)
That’s amazing!
Yes! I want to 100% heal both of my eyes to not using glasses within the next 1-2 years.
For me, a big thing is sleep. I used to work a very hectic schedule and didn’t get much sleep. My physical and mental health deteriorated as a result. Then I changed jobs and now wake up without an alarm. This changed my well being in so many different ways. When you don’t have energy, you won’t work out, you won’t cook a healthy meal, you won’t make good decisions for your health.
Yes, I love to hear this. Sleep is one of the bedrocks for longevity and vitality. I do everything I can to promote a good nights sleep every night.
Curious about the extended fasts, I feel like I wouldn’t be able to do it coz my stomach will eat itself 😅
Yeah the cool thing is he teaches them as "fast mimicing diets" so you can eat, you just only eat a certain amount of calories of specific foods for X amount of days.
Great tips! I don’t think there is a one size fits all diet, it’s all very individual 😊
Agreed, there are some common pillars we can all focus on, but diets are very individual
Looks yummy!!
It is delicious!
I don’t care ngl
Thanks for the comment at least.
What is a rest day?
In theroy a day that you don't do any work outs that takes your heart rate out of zone 1. Or just a day when you aren't working a certain set of muscle groups. For me, I take mondays 100% off other than walking and potentially some core work.
Amazing work!! ✨
I greatly appreciate it thank you!
