CNC AT Home

CNC @ Home wants to help you get excited about making things with CNC machines at home. There are many paths to doing CNC @ Home and we will show you what we are doing.

CNC is fun and easy to do at home. There are many affordable, space sensitive machines available. The things you learn on a small machine are 100% transferable to bigger machines.

As your skills grow, so can your equipment. That is one of the fun things about doing CNC @ Home. The time you put into learning how a machine works, how to get the software to do what you need stays with you as you upgrade.

    Wonder if I could use white masking tape on my 3018 blue diode to prevent burning my table?

  • @CNCATHome
    @CNCATHome3 күн бұрын

    That is an interesting idea. The blue masking tape is more difficult to cut through due to its color relation to the blue laser. At best, it would slow down any cutting into your table. I do not use a laser attachment with my 3018. I did add a wooden waste board to protect the table and to insure flatness in relationship to the cutting tool. There should be a video on that. Let me look that up... I guess not. There is a video on modifications I had made to my 3018 and you can see how I integrated the wooded waste board: kzread.info/dash/bejne/c4ys18ejaJmWYsY.htmlsi=XFQW6WOEmc4-byxp

    Hi, big thanks for the great informative content you've done. One question about ceramic tiles: which one gives you better result, matte surface or glossy ? For my fiber laser matte surface gives better result, or TiO2 coating doesn't "stick" so good to glossy tile.

  • @CNCATHome

    That is a great question. The tiles I use, I would call glossy and they have worked great as long as I have my parameters set properly and my lens is clean. ;-) I will have to look for some matte finish tiles the next time I am at the store. I don't remember seeing any. I may have to go to an actual tile store! Which wouldn't be a bad thing as I would like to play around with some colored tiles.

    02:49 The fire *triangle* requires fuel, *heat*, and oxygen (ask the 3rd-degree burn on my right knee how I know). The trick is to remove any, single node, and the fire ceases. Great video! I found that as I became more proficient with my laser, that I began to become more "casual" and more "comfortable". I learned to respect, and to a certain extent...fear, my laser as much as much as I do, my circular saw (which terrifies me).

    I would like to suggest that you optimize the settings to engrave the slates 1-by-1 and not line by line. You can minimize the hear movement and save more time. You can also finish each slate by itself, remove it on the spot and then place a new one.. You will also have the time to visualize the end result and not have to destroy two of them if things are not as you desire. Optimization Settings --> order by Group, Priority and then Layer! Make sure you do not group all the objects as 1 item when you start!

    Thank you for the input. You may have noticed that the two runs were done differently. I do like to save time when doing my etching. In this case, running one tile at a time wasn't a good time saver. I had already run a similar project and I knew the settings would work well. Your method would be if I was doing this for the first time or had made some major change that might affect the outcome. The second run was quite a bit faster which is one of the advantages of running batches vs one at a time. I like the way you are thinking! I do like to run a preview of a job and play with the optimization to see if there is a faster way. 🙂

It is also the same day as the wedding so it should be bride first. I always do the bride first as a wedding is "her" day. I know Gwen and have not yet met Justin so he gets second seat. In digging through my KZread portal, I am not seeing anything there either. There have been times when I have had a video freeze on me when it gets to a specific point. Not sure what causes it. If I skip forward in the video, it is fine. If I go back it is find. Then it sticks when it gets to "that" point. Eventually, it has always played after skipping back enough times. When that happens to me, it seems to be some type of corrupt video information that I got from KZread. You would think a reboot would have done the trick too. Give it some time and try again. • @CNCATHome
    @CNCATHomeАй бұрын

    I wish it was the battery! That can be an easy one to overlook if you think it is fully charged. Several years ago, there was an issue with the battery not wanting to charge. I had fully charged it recently and I did put my meter on it and it was putting out full voltage plus a little extra like a fully charged battery should. I also plugged the radio into the wall power supply to insure it wasn't a power input issue. I did some testing with the meter in the radio to insure the power was getting from the power management board to the brains of the radio and it was. One of the volume knobs had been acting up and would cause the power to shut off to the who unit even thought it was not the one with the on/off switch. I am guessing that is where the problem is hiding. I did what I could do with the equipment I have and just didn't get it going this time. I have a friend looking at it who is an electrical engineer (recent graduate so it is all fresh in his mind) and hope he can figure something out. can you use rubbing alcohol instead of denatured? and what was the best mix ratio again? i am tired of spray painting my tiles haha. Plus i want a non toxic way of doing this so i can do it inside. thanks

  • @CNCATHome
    @CNCATHome3 ай бұрын

    Absolutely. That should work just fine. I have had people tell me they use water. Some use a mix of water and white glue. Anything that will hold the TiO2 in suspension long enough for you to get it on your tile is good. As long as it will evaporate away. ;-) As for the mix, I am using a 3:1 mix and applying it with my air brush. :-)

    @@CNCATHome thank you:) 8ll do 2:1 and paint it on since i do not have an airbrush. I have done many tiles with paint but have been teying to use titanium dioxide in a solution for a while

    I am glad that you were able to get something from it. I enjoy trying new things and by documenting my experience, my hope is to encourage others to try things out. Sometimes, all you need is a little encouragement or direction to go. I hope you enjoy working on your own projects as much as I do. 🙂

    Thank you for taking the time to video and share It may not be perfect but one thing is that I have learned something new , like using many tiles i think an airbrush would be good to use as can clearly see the streaks from the poly foam brush well before I try an air brush i will try mixture with PVA glue as seen others use it and looks better.

  • @CNCATHome

    I have had several people comment on using white glue to help with the suspension. I have not yet tried it. I have been using a thin mixture with a little food coloring in the airbrush and getting good results. I am glad there was something to learn from the video. :-)

    I also have a fond memory for mechanical pencils. After 4 years of high school drafting and 10 more years as a (pencil) draftsman at my job I appreciated the personal flair, one could apply to linework and text. But alas, I have given into the electronic format mostly for the search capabilities, ease of revisions and shareability between devices. Good review though.

    As I am almost always at my computer for work these days, remote meetings and all, I tend to take my notes electronically. Searchable, and ease of share-ability are two main reasons. Spell check is a huge one for me as well.

    Dang, I wish I saw this an hour ago as I just made my first paper card before I found your video. In my case I used a fancy stencil script font (Brannboll) which worked out pretty well, but the tab trick would have been useful for a few letters. I also used a widely space dash vertical line in center to assist in the fold.

  • @CNCATHome

    I was just thinking about this video for some reason. Your comment came at a great time. :-) In the future, I hope you are able to use this method. Your widely spaced dash to help the card bend is brilliant! Good thinking. In manufacturing, that method is called a bend relief. We used them in back when I worked as a manufacturing engineer in precision sheet metal manufacturing. I can't say that I ever thought about using them with paper. Fantastic idea!

    Over 40 years of using a .5 is going to be difficult to overcome. ;-) I know the issue is me and how I write. If I use it exclusively for a while, I will likely come to love it as much as using a .5. Before this set, I had a .5, .7, .9, and a 1.3 in my arsenal of mechanical pencils. Now I have a .3 and I need to take some time to learn how to use it. :-) Thank you for the encouragement.
