  No, Hypatia really didn't make any grand discoveries that would play any part in modern consumerism. Some sources say she invented the astrolabe, but it was in fact her father Theon. Some speculate she assisted in the invention due to her ability to construct one on her own. People believe she created the Hydrometer, but there are sources that would argue that the hydrometer existed during the time Archimedes was around. Hypatia is only famous because her life as a female scholar is documented unlike other female scholars. She had political ties, gained popularity due to her status, but that came to an end when Cyril started to discredit her. They sent out rumors that Hypatia was preventing Orestes from reconciling with Cyril, and they even accused her of satanic practices. This led to her being murdered by a cult, where they stripped her down, dug her eyes out, chopped her into little pieces, just to drag her out and burn the remains. After her death she was only remembered as a symbol for learning. She is also remembered for overcoming sexism, which is a recurring issue in human history.
