I mixed to this superb recorder in 1/2” format for many years in the 80s. I ran it parallel to my digital recorders until a decent converter obsoleted it for all but editing. Avid’s Pro Tools 3 finally put it out to pasture. I also have to ask “why are these horrible sounding videos of a lavalier mic? in front of questionable monitors so popular?” I simply don’t get it.

@@ilfafioccaro417 It is the Voice of America -a govt broadcasting organization that has 38 language services that broadcasts all over the world. Information about the USA,news, and music programs. The VOA has like 38 broadcast studios and many production studios-forget how many. I now work at a remaining short wave transmitter site in Greenville, NC that can broadcast to anywhere in the world. At present broadcasts to Cuba as Radio Marti. The tape machines are gone-they are all digital now was reported their analog tape machines were surpluses-newer ones went to the Library of Congress. They archive material in analog form lasts longer and can always be played back and recorded more easily than digital.

@@ilfafioccaro417 Hi, I mean the white stuff on top of the big tube on the right. The problem is that the fibers come loose even without friction in this weakly bound state. I have the same problem with a Philips Leonardo television from 1960, but with a load resistance. You can paint over it (outside!) with heating paint, then it is no longer dangerous. As it is in the video, this can massively increase the risk of lung cancer in the long term, you should definitely fix it. Apart of that: This is an awesome studio tape machine!
