Bennett was keen to point out that the ship's crew was unionized, tipping off his likely political affiliation. It was union unrest and then the advent of commercial jet travel that shortened the United States' service life. Now she is a rusting shell tied to a pier in Philadelphia. Several rescue plans have been proposed over the years, but none has matured to date.

One of the weirdest feeling ever is to have one's memory to be jogged in two directions at once, particularly in a positive way, ending in pathos, tenderness, and poignancy. Just having reached early senior hood all this digs deep. How deep is the ocean, sub title, How high is the sky? Sing that Jazz song to me "one more time", in the quip aphorism used by by the great Count Basie!

I have a set of (unpublished) digital photos by 2 passengers who sailed on SS United States in the spring or summer of 1955. The photographers are the unknown couple themselves.They hailed from Hollywood, CA. They brought with them their 1953 convertible Cadillac automobile. Many of the pics are from their trip through Europe (France, Italy, Germany). Would these (rare) documemts be of any interest to the Conservancy archives! I may be contacted by eMail: yannsaunders [at] gmail [dot] com.

My family and I sailed on the Big U from Le Havre to New York in the summer of 1955. I was just a young boy but I'll never forget how wonderful it was to be on the fastest liner in the world. It wasn't fancy like Titanic--everything was polished chrome and stainless as would befit the time in which she was built. And she was beautiful.
@zquark19 ай бұрын
I also was a young fellow when the family sailed in her in 1960. Can recall details of the impressive ship and the voyage as if it were yesterday.

It's a shame that the Big U was never preserved. I believe this technology was able to last many many years given proper maintenance. Alas, as air travel took the world of travel to new heights, most of the old ships were either scrapped or left to depreciate with few exceptions.
@OldsVistaCruiser2 жыл бұрын
The Big U still exists. She is moored, rusting away, in South Philadelphia along the Delaware River. No ship has been able to break her Blue Riband speed records in the 70 years since she set them.
@EskimoCanadian442 жыл бұрын
@@OldsVistaCruiser Touché. I believe the Big U was truly capable of reaching speeds much higher than even her official records had clocked. Who knows, may have been capable of 100 knots! If only ever in the dreams of her designers. This ship was, still is a sight to behold. A crying shame they gutted her; it would have been a remarkable feat to preserve the Big U in her original condition as an East Coast complement to the Queen Mary. In a perfect world...

It's a disgrace. The US Government built this ship. The US Government, through neglect, lack of interest and foresight and mismanagement, more or less destroyed it. Now I think it's up to the US Government to come to its rescue. Who else has deep enough pockets to do the job? We had trillions for senseless wars in the Middle East. How about we save an American icon? It should be declared as a National Historic Engineering Landmark. Even a cosmetic restoration to the exterior would be a huge improvement. Does anyone want to Twitter the idea to Donald Trump?

Perhaps President -elect Trump can help us save this wonderful part of U.S. maritime history! She was our pride as she won the Blue Riband of the Atlantic. We need to save her as a lasting monument to American engineering, either as a floating museum, or as a special cruise ship (re-furbished) to sail once again. There are many that would love to experience a trip on this ship today. President elect Trump may be persuaded to save this ship as part of his "Make America Great Again" platform. It is certainly worth a try!

My grandparents sailed the Big U and her sister ship, SS America. I was very fortunate to have boarded both magnificent ships for their Bon Voyage parties. The Big U was such a classy gal. Now when I drive home to visit family in NY and PA I go to Philly to see her. My first visit was heartbreaking. I hope they can restore her.

The United States was built as a Navy troop carrier in reserve for any eventuality during the Cold War. Because of its outrageous thirst for fuel oil the ship was never commercially viable so, when Gov't subsidy was finally cut off, the ship was necessarily retired from service. Although the people who have a dream of restoring the ship show it in their videos back when its furnishings were intact, the fact is the ship was STRIPPED of everything worth a dime and is now just an empty HULL.
