I'm planning to make my own, but thought I'd watch a few YT vids first, for tips and references to optimum or standard sizes. In my ignorance I'd considered 18mm ply rather than 12mm (I'm in UK dealing with metric ply). Clearly 12mm is lighter. Conceptual design I find easy, also DIY, but I'm less sure about practical strength and any standards that might exist. So, I always try to see if I can learn from other's experiences. I'd wondered about making a hinged lid on 8/4 inch apples, to provide storage for grip kit (super clamps, cardellis, grip heads etc). Never seen this done and wondered if there was a 'good' reason eg too heavy, not strong enough, maybe a hinge lid compromises torsional rigidity - perhaps in turn forcing extra bracing and/or thicker ply (18mm)?? Id also considered 'nesting' to save space. My first idea was half, quarter, one eighth apples all nesting inside one another (Babooshka concept). That would be a full 8" apple high, possibly aslo incorporating grip kit storage and transit (military chest concept). Any concept requires prototyping to fine tune and optimise a design. I could do that, but I only need 1 box for myself. I don't intend to make/sell boxes, so 'better apple' production isn't a good use of my time. Hence trying to learn first and using the "carpenter's maxim" measure (think) twice and cut (make) once. I found other 'nesting apple' vids on YT (utilising 12mm ply) - 1, 2, 4 inch nest within 8 inch (7" internal for 1+2+4=7"). The full 8" apple is thus 1" wider/longer than part apples. But.... I wonder if strength of 8" full apple is compromised too much (removable end and no central brace)? Do you have any thoughts on that? If building that type of nest, I'm wondering about using a thicker top and/or thicker sides for the outer full apple box. Perhaps, 18mm or 24mm for top of outer apple (thicker side up) and maybe 18mm for vertical walls in lieu of a central brace and non permanent end? Any thoughts on that?
very cool build.
Thanks!
Big Thanks, my Awesome Friend!!
Thankful for watching, my awesome friend!
@@DroiMedia Very Welcome and wishing you a Great Summer. Cheers :)
I have been looking for a solution and well, you've done it! Simple, effective. Awesome. Thanks
Thanks! Appreciate the watch and you taking the time to comment, really means a lot 🙏🏻 😊
Yor are right. This video is not for me. I junk out a wide variety of items, so I need a wide variety of Allen wrenches, both American and metric sizes, so I was thinking of ordering (arranging) them in a row (in a holder) by size regardless of whether they are American or metric.
No.
No for instaprration
Ijus let God just let decide what his judgment will be.
How does wiring at both ends cut down on heat?
Hi.. do u mind sharing the measurements in mm of all the boards pls?
His wife: Honey where is my pantyhose?

This is so useful.. thank you so much
Thanks! Appreciate the comment my friend ☺️
If you want, we can work together, I am from India.
any problems with TSA?
I get stopped by TSA a lot due to the amount of batteries I travel with, and given what else needs to fit into my carryon I don't travel with this specific case so unfortunately no concrete answer there, but, I'm sure you could make it TSA friendly if you haven't already.
OK I was a bit disappointed, but after reading the guy who had 80 wrenches, I realized I felt the same way. BUT, after giving it some thought, your tip fits well for .y delema. Looking into allen wrench holders, I realized using your method along with strapping the wrenches in useful groups will yield a nice organized set. Thanks! Now to find a tube..😅
Thanks for watching the entire thing!!
Great idea. I need something rollable because I don't have a desk right now but this is a great idea to try for the future, or for situations where there's a desk available.
THANKYOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO!!!!!😮🎉
Thanks for watching!
I just appreciate how succinct this is SO MUCH 🫶🏻
Great work !
Thanks!
My husband just sent me this so I could sew it for him, lol.
Let me know how it turns out!
I work in commercial construction as an electrician and these things translate so well to the trades. If I need to throw a laser line but I’m 14ft in the air in the rafters these definitely come in handy. Between that and tablet mounts so I can look at blue prints wherever I might be working. I’ve been buying photo/cinematography gear for a while for my job.
Those real cookies at the beginning didn't look so hot. 🍪🍪 Can't wait to make my own fake cookies, though.
I made one similar to yours using the same hardware, but yours has 5/8" spigots. I want to add it to mine too. Right now I am using mine with 9" Matthelini end jaws for holding the frame.
Great job. You've helped me a lot
I love the dreamy effect❤❤❤
I have the same equipment including super clam and rode mic but the screw to ride mic is way smaller. What is the screw size you used to fit this ?
My DS10 seems to be loose and judders when my camera is on it. Have you encounters a lack of stability?
I have 83 allen wrenches. I'm going to need some bigger rubber bands. ;-)
Might need an entire bungee cord my dude! :D
How do you transport the batteries?
Transport as in an airplane? Or transport as in day-to-day? For day-to-day I just have a small canvas zippered bag (from like Home Depot I think) that I throw all my batteries in - AAA, AA, cam specific ones, V mounts, etc. - and then carry that along with everything. Easy and cheap solution.
@@DroiMedia gotcha. I am building a charging case that has 3d printed battery holders in it. I was curious if other people would find that useful for day-to-day or plane.
Late to the party, but 3d printed macro extension tubes in translucent material make for some interesting colour washing on images. You can also hit them with a light source to create flaring and all sorts of funky effects.
Awesome idea! Thanks for stopping by to add this comment, would love to see one of these translucent macro tubes in action, have any videos or pics?
@@DroiMedia Unfortunately not, I recently changed camera system, and havent bought any adaptors for my vintage lenses yet!
Thank you for the tip! I'll try right away 😊
How did it work out for you?!?! :)
@@DroiMedia Neatly. Thanks again 😊
Great video. I just purchased two similar products.
Thanks! Let me know how you like the clamps :)
Fantastic. Thank you for sharing
How would you do this to make it battery operated or usb powered to plug into a portable battery for portable use?
Probably the most common question I get asked about these.... I don't have a great solution at the moment. I have toyed with the idea of using a hollow tube that would fit AA batteries in lieu of the dowel rod that would power the entire light, just haven't found the right stuff for that. Otherwise a small USB battery pack that you attach with velcro to one end would be the easiest solution (and then you just need to get a USB to 3.5mm power cord). Again, haven't tried that. I typically just plug them into a larger battery pack I carry around that I charge camera batteries and stuff from - at the very least it allows me to put the light in spots that would be a bit more restricted if I needed a long extension cord and wall outlet access.
Right, so you just..... tie them together..... WHY DIDN'T I THINK OF THAT WHY GOD WHY
No clue, glad I could get the brain juices flowing my friend! Thanks for the comment, as a registered thespian I can appreciate a dramatic response :D
Thank yiu
Welcome 😊
Very helpful!!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching :)
I just found this today missing a pan handle used at my local camera store. They had a 40% discount on used gear. I ended up paying 189.00 and they threw in the original bag for it for free.
Noice!
Great tutorial! Fantastic simple instructions for my junior high school photography class! Brilliant stuff!
Awesome! Would love to see (and share) some pics of these in action if you're comfortable with that.
liked because of the doggo
My unending appreciation for your love of doggos 🙏🏻
It would be awesome if you can make this powered from a V mount batteries on a shark fin
Let's pretend I don't know what a shark fin is.... tell me more
Either the website you bought the tube from changed the way they frosted their tubes or the exposure of your video makes the LEDs look way more diffused than they actually are. The 1.5" tube is too narrow to diffuse the LEDs and you end up seeing each individual LED through the tube. I purchased the samr stuff you did, am i doing something wrong?
In person they typically show up as individual LED spots, but on camera they tend to look like the frosted tube you see in the videos. Yes, I exposed for them to look like that and then adjusted my other lights, but I do that for most shots so I hope that it doesn't seem like I'm misleading anyone here. I also notice that when I crank them to full power (via the dimmer in my follow-up video) the individual LEDs are a LOT harder to see. Let me know if you've found a workaround for this issue!
@@DroiMedia thanks for clarifying. Yea that makes sense, since they're really bright so the dots won't show up in the video unless you underexpose. I'm using the light stick as a decorative light (it's really long and leans against the wall) and so having a smooth glow is what I'm going for. I'm gonna try it with a higher density LED strip and see if that works
Will it have problem with heat accumulating inside the tube over time?
Thanks for asking - and I only ever had them get hot when I DIDN'T wire them from both ends. As is they get warm since it is an enclosed space, but I have never really had any 'hot' issues. I do think if I could go back I would drill a couple air holes at each end to allow for some air circulation.
will definitely be building these you have just saved me so much money
sweet! That's what I'm here for :)
8:35 Real professionals tighten this with a coin. 😀
I wanted to look fancy, always have a quarter with me on shoots though ☺️
Its kinda lame to create this tubes without using some adressable LED lights to make cool colorfull efects etc. It would add like 5 bucks to the budget.
Fair opinion, just wanted to give people the basics and let them run with it. Otherwise I would have been doing an RGB battery powered expandable one right off the bat. That being said you're correct that an RGB or other LED options aren't that much more expensive, I have a couple that have effects built in which are really nice, CRI is not great but 🤷♂️ I appreciate the watch and you taking the time to leave a comment!
@@DroiMedia no problem, im looking around to make some tubes that have really powerfull brightness. to be able to use them for outdoor filming. Sometimes color gives a good mood
@@AlexandreCalvario I think the hard part with DIY tubes, at least when I did these a couple years ago, was that none of the LED strips on the market were affordable and bright enough to really make an impact outdoors. Could be a totally different story right now, and I'm really interested in hearing what you end up creating (if you're going that route). Keep me posted!
Great video!
Thanks! On a scale of 1-10 how cool is the host? 🤓
@@DroiMedia Very cool, you kind of remind me a little of a younger Stephen Tobolowsky
Haha, never gotten that one (Usually get Ed Helms, Jason Sudeikis, the brother from the Mummy, and a few others...). Looked this guy up and you're not wrong, funny enough he went to college in the town I'm from.
