This channel is for the guy working in his garage on his own equipment. You don't need to be a mechanic or own a hundred tools to take care of 99% of the reasons your equipment won't start. I do my best to avoid tools that most guys(and ladies) don't have.
Sometimes we move away from the garage and tackle other home projects.

I didn't have an alternator but I did find Fluffy. I should have known cause she went missing the same time my pressure washer quit working. Removed same and back in business. I now lock my pets in the house when I wash the house. Thanks.

My Echo PAS266 didn’t spark in my tester but then did spark when I disconnected the kill switch. What does that mean is bad?
@KenWoodProduction You didn't say if you disconnected at the coil or switch, but if it's at the switch, replace it, and you're good. If you disconnected it at the coil, the wire is grounding along the way, so replace the wire. I would suggest also making sure the switch is ok. Once it's apart, it's an easy replacement. 👍

@KenWoodProduction Great, look for breaks in the wire insulation, I see it all the time on older machines. You can use any wire that's the right guage and has reasonably flexible insulation. Let me know, I like hearing success stories 🙂
@@GuysPlayingWithTools Update: took the “throttle arm” apart.:kill switch seems ok…followed the wire that i disconnected from the coil and didn’t see anything wrong with wire..no tears…the connector for the wire that goes on coil looked dirty so sprayed carb cleaner on that. Put it all together and now getting spark in my tester with wire attached to coil. Im gonna order a new coil and hope thats it!
@KenWoodProduction If you are getting spark now, it's possible something was touching, and you took care of it. If you are getting a good spark, the coil might be OK. It sounded a lot like a grounded wire when you described it.

Got a brand new one from a neighbor that tried to use it and he couldn't figure it out. Unfortunately it sat for a few years in his shed and the cheap metal used to make the pump corroded completely shut, I'm guessing from our low ph water. After replacing the pump, hose and wand I had about $180 dollars into it and a very good pressure washer.
Nice. The pumps don't like to sit around. If you put pump saver in before storing them they tend to do ok
They don’t get a lot of use, I run my one out of fuel after every use. Could be more than six months between uses
@almclean4835 Mine gets used about twice a month, so I shut off the fuel and clean until it stalls.

I know I'm not telling the content creator anything he does not know so for others never run a pressure washer without the hose connected and turned on. You will prematurely burn out your pump.
@eostrike I appreciate the comment. You can only run them for 15 or 20 seconds without water, and they shouldn't run more than a minute without opening the handle and allowing water to flow. It's the coolant for the pump. 👍
@GuysPlayingWithTools I agree with this statement because in that short amount of time the pump should not overheat. For me personally when working on these and or my own I always have my hose connected and turned on. This is just a habit because I burned one up many years ago running dry when I was self teaching small engine repair. It is content creaters like you that gave me the the tools to gain experience for the past 10 plus years fixing these as a hobby. Thanks for putting these videos out for everyone.
@eostrike I like it when I get comments like these that say "don't forget about...". It reminds me to mention something in the next one and it's a good "heads up" for everyone else. It's not easy to remember every detail(and sometimes what I already said) while working on a motor and moving tripods and lights around. 🙂

Exactly , I don’t do those . My personal pressure washer is electric. I do have a gas one I picked up for free. Got it going it works but I rarely use it

Those vertical pressure washer's are all ways failing quicker than the horizontal type of pressure washer's
They fail from sitting. You can rebuild the pump but it's a bit of work getting it off on this one

I’ve got one here that has been run without water, pump is ruined and a new one isn’t cheap. It’s not getting replaced, engine is good though

THANK YOU VERY MUCH! I had adjusted the valves on my Craftsman 4 stroke trimmer and the last time I used it there was oil all over the place. You mentioned the valve cover and I figured that would be a good place to start even though I was sure I had tightened it down and was going to look elsewhere for the leak. As luck would have it, the valve cover didn't get tightened down all the way. Got it snugged up and no more leaks. Now, if I could get it to start with the rope I'd be happy! It starts fine with the speedstart mechanism. And it did start once with the rope. I am getting spark with the rope, so not sure why it's not starting on the rope pull.
That usually means it's a little lean on the low screw or the plug is fouled. Give it 1/4 turn and a new plug and see if it works. 👍
A neighbor had a Toro Recycler 22" on the curb for junk pickup. The FWD was broken, but everything else was working perfectly and in really great shape. I ordered a new cable and with the help of my son and this video we were able to get the fwd working in a few minutes. Went so well he didn't even get yelled at while he held the flashlight😅 thanks for the great tutorial! I definitely hit like, subscribe and the bell!
Wow. You must described the day I decided to make videos. I also found a Toro Recycler with nothing but a broken cable. (It makes .my day when I get comments like this.)
Where do you add oil to this small engine, and what kind does it take for this model in particular?
This one is a 2 stroke. With 2 stroke motors, you add the oil to the fuel, between 40:1 (3.2 oz per gallon of gas) and 50:1(2.6 oz per gallon of gas). I usually run them all at 3 oz per gallon. It will give a tiny bit of smoke on some motors, but they last forever that way.
What’s the tool you use?
When I did this video, I used a 3/8 air impact. I switched off to a Milwaukee 3/8 battery impact since then to get rid of dragging air hoses around. 🙂

Dry grass would do it. The blade has more leverage than the pull rope. At least it wasn't an alternator 🤣

Good video Bill. I just got an SRM 210 in for repair, which the owner told me hasn't ran in four years. It looks like a straight shaft version of this one, and will probably use a carburetor from Amazon. I don't work on trimmers very much, so thanks for all the great videos on two cycle equipment.
I love the 210s. I had one a few months back that I kept for a couple of months before selling it. As long at it hasn't seen regular gas, a carb will usually get it back to its glory days pretty quick 🙂

Your absolutely correct about regular gas, it destroys small engines. I only run ethanol free and Echo red Armor in all my 2strokes @40:1 and they all run fantastic. Its vefy important to use ethanol free fuel if possible. If not possible, the drain and run until equipment stops. Nice trimmer Bill, and good fix on that classic trimmer
Ethanol is "ok"(not great) as long as you keep in mind that it has a shelf life that is a *lot* shorter than good old-fashioned unleaded .I see a lot of old machines with solid internals and way too many where they ran "1 tank of gas, to finish the job". They are always burned up.
I have a 2009 Ryobi RLT30CESA that I have fought with and for ages to get it running right. It just did not cross my mind to buy a whole new carb and I am actually very surprised at how little they cost to do so. Thank you for the heads up!
It's the best $12 or $13 you can spend on a machine that has picked up a personality. Other things can go wrong, but 95% of the time, a new carb is a quick fix with great results.

Hi Bill - I have a Toro Recycler with a Kohler XT675. It used to start and run until hot with the old coil. Your video inspired me to order a new coil and install it. Now it will not start at all unless I use some start fluid, but then only runs for a second or two. I even tried re-installing the old coil, but the problem is the same as with the new coil. As best as I can tell I have the spacing correct. The fact it does run for a few seconds seems to indicate it is getting a spark. Any ideas? Thanks! BTW - your video is great!!
Sorry, I had to write a story for this one, I am trying to cover all the bases 🙂 Did you make any other changes at the same time as the coil? The fact that the old coil is acting the same as the new one gives me a hint that the spacing you are using might be slightly loose. if you haven't tried it already, use a piece of regular printer paper and fold it in half as your spacer. Get the paper in place, then rotate the crank until the magnets grab on both sides, then tighten the 2 coil bolts(screws), the paper should fight you on the way out and when you turn the motor over(with the plug out) the coil should not touch the crank at all. If it does you will usually hear the scraping noise. Then put a new plug in before testing, just for good measure. That said, what you told me makes me think you may also have a fuel problem. If nothing changes with everything above, follow these steps and let me know what you see: Check the fuel, if you aren't 100% sure, drain and replace it, all the way through to the carb Loosen the fuel cap and see if it will run, the cap has a vent and they can get clogged Kink\shut off the fuel line and take the line off the carb, to make sure the fuel is flowing. If the fuel is reasonably fresh and flowing, clean the jet on the carb. There are a couple differences in the linkage(take pics when taking it apart) but it's almost identical to cleaning the jets on a Honda carb. kzread.info/dash/bejne/nZl-ttN7ZdW-nps.html Wow, that was a lot, but I am trying to cover everything. Hi - Thank you for the quick and very detailed and helpful recommendations!! The weird thing is with the old coil, I used the mower three times, in about 5-6 minute periods, this past weekend after it had cooled down each time. The only thing I changed was the coil. Same gas and carb and spark plug in their same state as this weekend. I will try all your recommendations and will let you know how it goes. BTW - I also checked the part numbers on old and new coils, they are the same 14 584 04.
It's got me curious too. Readjusting the coil is an easy test and that's the changed part. Starter fluid is "hotter" than gas and sparks easier, so it could still be a coil gap problem. I keep thinking fuel though...
My Ryobi wouldn’t run. I cleaned up the old carb and it runs, but poorly. Just ordered a new carb kit (+ plug and filters etc) for $15; they arrive tomorrow. Great tutorial and advice glad I found this! Thanks!
I am glad I can help. Cleaning a 2 stroke carb is good, but without a new gasket and diaphragm, it makes you think it might work, and that will drive you crazy
I use to try and rig them cables up when they broke such a waste of my time I think it only worked one time🤣The table lift is EPIC💯👍🏾
I get a lot of them with weird cables, They are cheap, so I replace them without thinking about it. Bruce over at Bruce's Shop gave me the idea for the lift table. It is a serious time saver, no more working on my knees too.

It will be a couple weeks, the original attempt failed miserably and the shop needs to be set up for summer weather before I try again(it is reaching that time of year, where 100+ is normal)
Bobbie run it on Propane? Hank said to make sure you get your Propane at Strickland propane and accessories. They likely have the adaptor for that 😂😂😂 No seriously that’s going to be cool. I know they run some weedeaters on propane

Nothing like the Quantum motor! When I am out buying them and see that curved air cleaner, I hand over the money. It was a balmy 100 here yesterday, but they say it will warm up over the next few days. 🥵 (I am heading for the beach for a couple weeks, it's too hot here)
I cannot work on any machine unless it is clean. Just how I was taught. I also clean the air filter, lubricate all linkages etc., spraying the entire machine with Duck Oil and wiping it down before handing it back. As a courtesy thing; I also sharpen the blade. I do fixed price servicing and have a if I cannot fix it you don't pay policy. I no longer do this for a living, family friends and associates, but as a hobby. Keeps the old grey matter from going soft & spongy. First job from school 'horticultural engineer' aka lawnmower mechanic! I cannot walk by a dumped unit edge of teh road, it is coming home with me and 9/10 I will get it going & turn it out on eBay etc., for an easy profit.
I also like to clean them up a bit before working on them but I save cleaning them for afterwards. It's over 100f out there during the day so I do most of my work before sunrise, and I don't want to bother the neighbors with the pressure cleaner at 6am 🙂 It's always good practice to to the filters and blades and whatnot, I don't show it on video. I worked in a small engine shop while I was in school and aways thought I was a mechanic, "Horticultural Engineer" sounds a lot better! 😁

I don't think it's particularly old, it's got a B&S 550. It's an entry level mower and they cut corners all over the place with them.

how did you make plug
I had a rubber hose that I melted the end on and made a plug. Auto parts stores sell 1/4 plugs that would fit right on if you don't want to melt a rubber tube.
I've got one dunked in drain cleaner . But I did have to put screws in it to remove the old sealer.
That will work. Be super careful , most drain cleaners are really strong and can eat the tank up in a hurry. Make sure you flush it well with baking soda when you are done. I am curious and hoping for the best for you. Let me know how it works out. 👍

I don’t think mine is getting any fire, I just replaced the carb, filter, lines and plug the only thing I can think of is the malfunctioning ignition coil. What do you suggest I should try?
Check the spark, some auto stores will lend you an inline spark checker(they are under $10 on Amazon if you think you will use it occasionally). Go ahead and throw a new plug in(I prefer Champion RJ6YC) and let me know how that goes. 👍
You can call it "Medieval," but that Snapper design has survived the test of time; I'll take this "dinosaur" any day of the week. My 1997 model is running strong.
You won't get any arguments from me. They don't make them like this anymore. It's a smaller mower with a seriously heavy-duty deck. It weighs more than almost any new mower out there.
I was thinking fuel filter right away but I like the process of elimination you showed us. Coils can be difficult to diagnose sometimes too... quit when hot or run irregular. But You nailed it Bill! well done!!
It's fun to show the process sometimes. I see too many people throwing parts at machines nowadays. Closing the spark gap to check the coil is a trick I was taught back when I worked in an engine shop.
I miss the Flame-Effect at the beginning. The logos look good too. can't beat Honda engines for reliability. Great Show, Bill!
