I think Scott Crossfield said in an interview that it was like being in the center of the sun when it exploded with him in the cockpit. The fire crews smothered the fire quickly and got him all wet. He was afraid the newspaper headlines would read "X-15 explodes! Pilot wets pant." :) kzread.info/dash/bejne/iYykp7KTZr3AedY.html

Good movie back in the day they didn't have closed captioning for the hearing impaired perhaps someone could share their closed captioning editing skills Re- release the movie closed captioned in memory of Kitty O'Neill's Legacy to inspire women and men challenged by impaired hearing or any disability can be overcome. God rest her soul. Lived an awesome life never held back gave it her all. God bless RIP Kitty O'Neil

Well said, I couldn’t agree more! Very inspirational indeed, my brother was born profoundly deaf and I wanted to share the video link with him but with no captions/subtitles for him to read it wouldn’t really be any good at all. Sad really as it’s inspirational for the deaf community and would most likely teach “hearing people” as my brother calls us to understand better what it would be like. Sorry to go on but I feel strongly about this subject for obvious reasons. Have a great day 🙂

My late grandfather, Vic Horton, was there somewhere. Prior to joining NASA in late 1958, he worked for Thiokol and helped test the XLR-99. Old press releases list him as being one of the personnel present during its first successful test firings and throttling demonstrations. Later, after he joined NASA, he became involved in the actual X-15 flight tests as a project engineer and worked with all the men who flew it (he was closest with Bill Dana and had his next to Bill's in the pilot's office fir 25 years). He also flew as B-52 launch panel operator on occasion, as he did with the later lifting bodies. When Michael Adams had his fatal crash in the #3 ship (broke up during reentry) in 1967, Grandpa organized and led the search and recovery efforts near Johannesburg, California to find the plane's black boxes. He waz also the one who came up with the idea for the ground-based "8-ball" attitude indicator that was installed in the control room at Edwards to keep a similar accident from happening.
