Asa Jennings, the Hero of the Smyrna Fire in 1922

Asa Jennings, the Hero of the Smyrna Fire in 1922

The Smyrna Catastrophe & Fire of 1922
In August and September of 1922, the beautiful port of Smyrna became Ground Zero for one of the greatest human tragedies... It was the last violent episode in a ten-year holocaust that had killed three million people-Armenians, Greeks, and Assyrians, all Christian minorities-on the Turkish subcontinent between 1912 and 1922. It would also serve as a marker of the end of the Ottoman Empire.

Humanity was on fire, from the ashes of despair rose heroes, like American Consul General George Horton and Lieutenant Commander Halsey Powell, who defied United States Admiral Mark Bristol’s orders to remain neutral and not allow any refugees aboard ship.

Then there is the Reverend Asa K. Jennings, the frail YMCA employee, who fed, sheltered and led an evacuation of nearly 350,000 people from Smyrna to neighboring islands and mainland. How could one frail man, with nothing more than faith in his heart, become the Shepard of hundreds-of-thousands of refugees?

Very emotional and heart breaking but inspiring at the same time of what a man of Faith in God can do when faced with terrible circumstances. Move mountains when necessary with help from whom God sends.

This is a part of history that has been swept under the carpet. It deserves to be spread far and wide.

I am grateful for the American heroes and I applaud them for such a magnificent rescue of so many people. However, the truth is that the British Crown, the British Government, the American Government, the German Government and the Crypto Jewish bankers put the Turks up to murdering the Greeks for their oil and their land. The right thing to have done would have been to pay the Greeks a fair price for their oil. Politeness and protocol also demanded that they stay out of the Greeks' country, not murder them and take what they want. Apparently, this mob can't conduct business in a civilized manner but stoop to barbarity and theft at every opportunity. Their wanton display of savagery, butchery and brutality has been well-noted. It's a pity that the negotiations for rescue were at the cost of the slaughter of a whole generation of young men. Because the Turks were fearful of retaliation? The guilty always fear this. And the Americans complied? They did not send in the marines? All this occurred because the mighty American, British Empires, thanks to the Crypto Jewish bankers, salami to the Turks. Oh how they grovelled to the Turks and Germans. Pirate nations and crowns have no place amongst the nations of the civilized global community. These "wins" will be an unbearable millstone round their necks. They need to pay up and return what they stole.

My grand grandfather was Greek, he was buried alive by his own turkish servant. We gave Turks money so they can kill us later. Greece remember! Hire GREEKS or Europeans / Americans. You know how to do it!

Well done Mr Jennings. A great personal achievement. Nothing to do with God of course, as God doesn't exist. Faith in God is a useful driver though, as we can see. As an aside, the Greeks were targeted due to their troops ravaging the Turkish countryside during their rapid retreat after their failed invasion and attempted land grab. Supported by the British, of course.

A hero like Jennings is the reason I am alive today. My grandmother and her 2 sisters were rescued by these boats and made their way to Crete where my grandmother met my Grandfather. They dressed as young boys to escape being taken by the Turks as girls were taken & raped. Thank you for this great documentary. I met the heroes I didnt know about and forever thank them for their bravery and love for human lives.

My Great Aunt Helen Mackey was in Smyrna from 1918-1922 and was there when this happened. She worked for the YMCA as a typist, translator and swimming instructor and saw countless atrocities committed by the Turks.
