    I decided to try out braided dyneema string. To my surprise, it worked perfectly fine. It's a bit tricky to get the length correct, it's only off by a little bit here and there, but it works. I'm using a 3mm string on my 80lb pistol crossbow for some reference.

    It’s vinegar that has had steel wool soaking in it for 24 hours. I can’t remember the name of the chemical that is produced, but it reacts with the tannins in the wood to darken it

    Looks great. It will look like an original Schnepper with some decorations, a steel prod and the original lock mechanism. It's really nice to see your craftsmanship grow! What are your thoughts on reproducing a 15th century cranequin? I know this sounds like a considerable feat, but I'd like to know how far you think you are from achieving something like that.

  • @themodernarmbruster

    I’m also making a pretty fancy custom Schnepper right, now which will have a 225lb prod and its own wippe. That’s the highest draw weight prod I’m able to get.

  • @EuHkio
    @EuHkioАй бұрын

    @@themodernarmbruster Wow!! That's awesome. It will also be rather powerful at that draw weight if it's fiberglass, probably similar to historical steel Schneppers

  • @themodernarmbruster
    @themodernarmbrusterАй бұрын

    @@EuHkio It's actually a steel prod, however the draw length is significantly longer than on historical schneppers; mine will have a draw length of 9.5 inches vs. about 7 in the originals. Those extra 2.5 inches at 225 count for a LOT of power and acceleration.

    Seems you might wanna add some extra tolerance to your designs there. I doubt a few thou of wiggle would impeed the function of that nut & it'd save your customers a good bit of frustration receiving a faulty product...

  • @themodernarmbruster
    @themodernarmbrusterАй бұрын

    That’s good advice. The wierd thing is that this is the third run of kits, and the problem hadn’t cropped up before, so maybe it was something funky with the wood? And also the previous two batches I did in the spring, which tends to be a bit less dry than winter where I am (southern Ontario)

  • @patconner2638
    @patconner2638Ай бұрын

    @@themodernarmbruster could've been seasonal humidity differences. Could've also been a batch of timber that got a little case hardened at the kiln. Could've been something else entirely... That's the nature of working with organic materials like wood; you've gotta find a compromise between what you need the object to be and what the material wants to do on its own Looks like your string nut was 3D printed? Wonder if adding a printed casing for the nut might help accommodate any wood movement while keeping the tighter tolerances you're aiming for? It'd give you more precise control over the tolerance on that joint at least

  • @themodernarmbruster
    @themodernarmbrusterАй бұрын

    @@patconner2638 Thanks for this! No, the nut is hand made from 1.5 inch Delrin rod. Your casing idea is excellent, and kind of what they did in the old days; they would have the front and often back of the socket lined with brass or bone; this was ostensibly to prevent undue wear and tear, but I now wonder if wood movement was another issue that was addressed with the lining? Interesting!
