A Language Learning Tale

A Language Learning Tale

Welcome. My name is Juliet. I'm British, I'm a writer and I'm currently learning Italian (since December 2020), Welsh (since December 2021) and refreshing my French from my youth (since March 2023). I use Duolingo for language lessons, but I also use KZread, reading books and various other resources.

The current schedule for posting is:

Mondays - Duolingo run if I have one to post.
Wednesdays - Regular video (books, translations, etc).
Thursdays - A story/poem in Italian, if I have one to post.
Fridays - A resource you can use for language input, if I have one to post.
Sundays - A podcast on a language-related topic. Also available on Spotify, if you prefer to use that for podcasts.

Let's Talk Duolingo - Again!

I could not roll my r’s in high school. My Spanish teacher yelled at me so much, I had nightmares of him yelling at me.

German native speaker. Did the German Spanish course up to 5th level.. All guidlines dropped. A minority language, only 100+ million speak it as the official or one one of the official languages errors without end, even the wrong articles, etc. 40+ years ago I did a two years intensive course in Spanish. Plus 6 years of Latin at high school. Then I switched to English Spanish. About twice as much lessons than in German Spanish and all the old guidelines, story telling etc. The US English is terrible, no the Duolingo US English is a disaster. Ich have been travelling US for 6 weeks and never encountered such poor language in reality. . Often I found myself understanding the Spanish better than the US duo. I will finish level /unit 4, and then stop the Spanish duo adventure. Will not care about streak or league in the future, have been in Diamond league for some weeks, its useless. Being reminded often that Navajo and Vietnamese are taught by Duoling is annoying, also commercials in foreign languages, firms of foreign countries.

I could write a pamphlet about all that is wrong with the 🦉. I would need a month in the mountainous region of Nepal to meditate away the rage..so I could surgically deconstruct what is surely one of the big corporate scams of this millennium. Shame on me for averaging 50+hrs@wk on their app these past four years. I commend everyone who makes an anti-Duolingo video. Brava!

And I try not to roll my R in order to get an English R. I did not know that people are struggling the same as me to get a Latin R. I feel much better now 🤣

After reviewing your videos, I noticed that they are missing rank tags and your title descriptions are not fully optimized for SEO. Currently, your SEO score is at 0%. It's important to note that video SEO is a major contributor to a video's success. To increase your chances of going viral, it's crucial to use high-ranking keywords and promote your video organically to your targeted audience.

Your channel looks good and the videos are amazing. There are some problems with your KZread channel. That's why your channel is not growing. I see your videos are not optimized properly. If you have such problem, your channel will never get the expected likes, comments or views. I found that problem in your channel. Your video does not have enough likes, comments, or shares and is not reaching the target audience. Make your video titles SEO-friendly. Add niche-relevant keywords to your channel and videos Immediately need SEO for your KZread channel.

Thank you for your channel and poems. Wondering if it would be possible to put the sub-titles up closer to the Italian. That would make it easier to read both, I think. And just a couple of corrections: With tribu (accent over the u), the emphasis is on the second syllable. And with sbagliano, the emphasis is on the first syllable. Thank you.

I can't say padre in spanish with the rolled R's, but I can roll my R's with certain words like permaneces. It doesn't make sense to me

  • @catherineburke7900
    @catherineburke79007 ай бұрын

this is probably because of the sound before or after. in padre it's an 'a' in which your tongue is at the bottom of your mouth but in permaneces the 'e' is already quite close to where you need it to be for the rolled r!

This is how I use the Legendary lessons- I repeat lessons for practice until they’re comfortable. Then I try the legendary. They are hard. So I do as much of it as is comfortable - maybe only getting 1/3 or 1/2 way. Then I log out of it and try again another time. I use free Duolingo along with other sources like You Tube videos and on line translators. I appreciate that Duolingo still offers free learning at a time when everyone and everything is charging. Maybe this reply will help someone. Good luck guys

as a welsh learner, ive found the duolingo welsh course kinda confusing sometimes it mixes dialects and doesnt really tell you how patterns work, instead just expecting you to find that out yourself i would say its more helpful for refreshing or learning vocab but not for like grammar and stuff

  • @7MPhonemicEnglish

This is a can of worms because what you're actually doing is trilling a /d/ consonant. The IPA chose to assign the 'R' symbol to the Trilled D, so we call it "R". This is because more languages use the symbol for that sound than for the 'er' sound that English has. In General American English and most English accents the IPA symbol is apparently /ɹ/ but the Clowns in charge want to keep calling it a consonant despite it having all the attributes and functionality of a vowel. I don't like Clowns. I reject the Clowns and call it a vowel. You can give a D-trill a single symbol but that seems to be a denial of what the sound truly is. The more logical symbol would be a /d/ with a diacritic indicating that it is trilled for a short or a long time.
