The Inspiring School Counselor

The Inspiring School Counselor

Hello you all! Welcome to my channel! I am a school counselor currently placed in an elementary school setting and this is the start of me sharing with you my adventure as a school counselor! We will be diving into the roles of a school counselor, fashion of a school counselor, and many more fun things and topics. I will also be doing mini-lessons with my students as were trying to make it through this COVID 19 pandemic. This is just the beginning of great things to explorer and I am so excited! Hopefully, as I bring you through my journey, we can build a community where we can help motivate each other to thrive to impact our world one student at a time!

    I’d leave it on if it was for me. I’ve worked in school for 11 years now. However, I’m a brand new counselor this year and I’m actually looking to get some light covers for my office. Our school hasn’t started yet. I’m waiting to see what my room would pook like. Thanks for all that you do! Your videos helped me through the interview process!!! ❤

    Greetings, if I was a school based therapist then yes I need consent but school counseling is considered a regular educational service provided by the school, so legally the counselor can see a minor student without parent consent. However, there are some school districts that require the school counselor to get consent anyways. so it just depends on where you work.

    When I was 10 years old, I lied to my elementary school guidance counselor. I told her that Daddy was hurting me, which was a big fat lie. When I was 26 years old, I felt extremely guilty for lying to her, so I decided to write her a letter, telling her the truth. In the letter, I told her that Daddy had never hurt me and that all he ever did was love me. When she got the letter, she called the police department. The police department then called my house when I was helping Mommy with the laundry. Just then, I had to clean the house because there was gonna be a policeman coming to the house. My little brothers also pitched in. When the policeman came, we sat down in the dining room and told me that my elementary school guidance counselor had already known the truth a long time ago. He told me that I didn't need to write her any more letters in the mail. He then asked me how I got her address. I told him that I used US Phone Book.

    If you're wondering why I still call my parents Mommy and Daddy, it's because I'm autistic. My grandaunt Peggy always called her parents Mommy and Daddy. If Peggy were alive right now, she'd be 99 years old and will still be calling her parents Mommy and Daddy.

    OMG! That is what I will be dealing with next year😫 The former counselor was there 8 years. She did administrative work and extra duties. She transferred because she said it got to be a lot even for her being alone. Not to mention I am very nervous because most of my experience is in secondary as a special education teacher.

  • @TheInspiringSchoolCounselor
    @TheInspiringSchoolCounselorАй бұрын

    Omgosh really! I pray it changes for you this coming year so you don’t have to bear that burden. I just hate how we as counselors have to do a lot of advocating for our role because school districts fail to educate administrators etc. on how to utilize us.

  • @andreiareynolds4457
    @andreiareynolds4457Ай бұрын

    @@TheInspiringSchoolCounselor I agree; however I was able to speak to her briefly. She stated that she did master scheduling eventhough she knows that our coordinator informed us that it isn’t our responsibility. She didn’t mind it; therefore they expect me to do it and a lot of other duties that I didn’t do because I was a virtual school counselor. It’s too much to say on here. How can I send you a private message?

    If you are a student go ahead and save those group presentations and projects which may be more professional (and updated) than what you will find on the internet. If you find essential journal article, download it, because you won’t have free access to some journals later. Thanks for this video! As a girl growing up, I always thought I wanted a girl and a boy as children. I wound up not having any children and it was not by choice. In dealing with elementary school children, did you have more trouble with boys as opposed to girls? For me, I was very obedient. My mother never had to come to school for anything dealing with disciplinary issues. I would think boys might be more a discipline problem.

  • @TheInspiringSchoolCounselor
    @TheInspiringSchoolCounselor3 ай бұрын

    That’s a good question and I never thought to track in a school year how many boys I had to work with vs. girls. However, Working in the elementary setting I have girls coming in and out of my office just as much as boys.

    I feel like it’s incredibly difficult to explain that question to a child. Like if you have the historical knowledge of all the shit black people went through then it’s easier to understand why they would have a month to be celebrated, because they were treated like absolute shit for decades. Same with other POCs, lgbtq+, and other minorities. But like kids don’t got that background, they don’t understand how bad the past was, beginner level history classes water it down and depending on how young they may not have the empathy to understand it fully. So like good on you for taking your time and doing your best to explain to the kid the why.
