I know this is an old post. Honda did produce exactly what this country needed, but most people opted for the motorcycle instead. I only know this because for many years when I would go on the hunt for another 2 wheeled vehicle my own prejudice twords the scooter would stop me from getting a scooter. I am an old fart now at 64 years old, arthritis in my lower back and hips and knees among other places, I was forced into a step through scooter if I still wanted to ride pain free. Honda being the first to produce a "maxi" scooter, the Honda Helix, already had a wonderful scooter that would run full throttle all day long at 75 mph(fast enough for any interstate) and never over heat or wear out if maintenanced properly. I am the proud owner of a 2001 NSS250 Honda Reflex. 4 years ago I got the Reflex with 14000 original miles on the clock and just this past spring of 2024 I turned 57000 miles on the clock. Now in my life time I have owned and rode some of the best and fastest motorcycles that were being sold in the states at that time, but since running the living hell out of this Reflex scooter for the last 4 years all over Illinois and every state boardering Illinois, I have really kicked myself for not buying one of these things much sooner. Like 25 or 30 years ago, the scooters being made even that long ago were rock solid extremly high quality vehicles that most bikers did not know about or care, including myself. Well, I love scooters now!!😁

@@prabdau I agree. Believe it or not, that's challenging for me. Trying! 👍🏼
I used to always wave; it became a subconscious habit. One day I was making a left hand turn in heavy traffic, a guy waved, and I automatically waved back. Wow! I realized I was waving out of habit, and it had become a safety issue: hand no longer on clutch, me looking at moto guy instead of paying attention to the 20 cars around me. So I stopped waving. It took me a while, and a lot of effort, to break the habit. I no longer wave. I've had people tell me I'm "ruining their ride" by not waving, at which I laugh. I ride my own ride. I'm amazed at the number of people who wave to me from the other side of the freeway, at 70 miles an hour, across two concrete barriers and a wide median. No, I'm not going to wave back.
Good points. Safety over anything else. I will gesture another rider only if I feel confident I'm able to when the time is right and won't lose sleep over it if I don't or can't. People are too sensitive these days.
My Pirelli Angel was about $35 cheaper than the City Grip2. I accidentally got the reinforced version, so not sure how that’ll go.
@@jimstenlund6017 Should be fine. The reinforced has benefits that help protect tires from punctures, but can sacrifice some ride comfort due to stiffer sidewalls. Probably not enough to notice I would imagine. Still probably better ride than stock tires regardless. Enjoy! ✌🏽

Did I miss an episode? When did you learn to shift after a twist and go? I do like Triumphs ,think they are better then those other brands
I owned a manual bike three decades ago, a Suzuki 500 or something like that. Took a break from riding for many years then settled on the "twisty". I still enjoy shifting at times though! Yeah, Triumph does a great job on their bikes.
Have you experienced a dog encounter or attack while riding a motorbike? Do you carry any type of dog deterrent? 🙏
as a former driving instructor, and now 61 years old...I am having trouble finding a reliable vehicle ( Van / Wagon / whatever ) I would be nervous sitting at stop / signs / lights without a rear-view mirror. I notice it seems hard to see clearly behind you unless you lean over to one side. I would be worried about getting rear ended and pushed into the vehicle in front of me. I have never even ridden a 49CC scooter, but for only FINANCIAL reasons only I would consider taking the 16 hour class at the local community college and getting my motorcycle endorsement so I can buy one of these. For $4,000 - $5,000 it seems like a reliable mode of transport around town and short trips out of town. But living in Wisconsin I have no clue where to even store it for the winter months?
I am always looking behind me, especially when I plan to stop or sitting idle at a traffic light to make sure vehicles are slowing and see me. I'm not sure if I would be able to get out of the way even if I tried, but maybe. I am always aware of my surroundings. The mirrors are not going to provide 100% visibility, but it's enough where I have the confidence that I can see what I need to. I never feel like they don't do the job. You take a chance every time you ride and that's just a choice we make. I know a guy who was rear-ended by a delivery truck as he waited at a traffic light, it happens. The delivery driver didn't see him and was probably looking at this phone. He was laid up for months and lucky to be alive, with multiple neck/spine surgeries. He said he is done riding and is selling his Harley. All it takes is one time to change your mind about being out there on two wheels. However, I don't focus on the "what-ifs" because it saps the joy out of the experience for me. I accept the risk and I'm as careful as I can be and that's all I can do. I would never ride without a helmet, however. That's also a choice. Anyway, the rider's course does teach a lot about riding that you would never read in booklets because the instructors have a wealth of knowledge (most of them) that is priceless information. I was humbled going through the class because I thought I knew pretty much about riding. Wrong. You always learn something. BTW, if you get a bike you can buy a nice cover online to store it under if you don't have a garage. Some of the better covers do a great job protecting the bike. You can check out the slightly used market for motorbikes too and may save thousands, then invest quality accessories and enjoy the experience. Riding is a combination of keeping a positive outlook and being true to your physical abilities or limitations. Once you find the right bike you'll really enjoy two wheels a lot more. Hope this helps!

Good review. Your summary is spot on. Speed for city folks, Scrambler for country folks. I have a little over 1000 miles on my Scrambler 400X. It performs well on twisties for those of us who do not have the sport bike mentality and surprisingly well off road for those of us who are not true dirt bikers. Whether you get the Speed or the Scrambler plan on spending an additional $500 on accessories. The Triumph OEM upper and lower crash bars, aluminum skid plate, and center tank guard are well worth the investment to protect your bike.
Thank you for that. Really appreciate it. Great information and I'm sure viewers will find this useful. Enjoy your ride and be safe out there! ✌🏼

Thanks Scott for your videos! I have watched several of your videos and have learned a lot from you. You have the most informative videos on this bike on KZread. I am 63 years old retired and would like to do some riding like you suggest. Not interested in going 90mph and just do back road riding at 30-50 mph. I have a electric bike with 100-150 mile range but am concerned about impeding traffic with a top speed of only 25-30 mph . You have almost talked me into purchasing one. Going to go by the local dealer here in Athens Georgia today and hopefully make a final decision.
Wow, thank you! I do appreciate the kind words and it helps encourage me to press onward. Running a KZread channel is not easy and it's very time consuming. It's one of those things where you're either in, or out and there's no in between or your videos simply won't get promoted in feeds. you should do a video of replacement of your drum break pads.
Thanks for the video. On scooters with rear drum brakes…does the drum need to be bled or does that use a cable system?
Drum brakes don't use brake fluid, just a cable/camshaft that presses and expands shoes that push outward on the inside of the drum.

I just wanted to add I am on the taller end of motorcycles being about 190cm/6foot something and when I tried this bike out I did not feel cramped on it. Until I turned the bars and at full lock the end of the handlebar came into contact with my knee. Fortunately both this and the PCX have handlebars and you could always raise them up a little to combat this or just tolerate it. Since how often do you need to be at full lock and are in a position where moving your leg would be a bad idea?
Having a shorter inseam my knees don't come into contact with the handlebars at all. I haven't paid attention to how much space is there, but I'll check. Yes, the handlebars can be raised with extenders for those with longer legs. Good idea to mention thanks!
The price is what keeps me and I'm sure majority of people from buying one. After spending some time in Thailand they had the Honda click 160cc 2024 model for sale for about $2,000... I think for Americans to really get into these they are going to have to have the prices come down to under $3,000
Yet Americans can drop $65K on a new midsize SUV and think nothing of it. Most of those I imagine are leased, but still. I couldn't do that unless I was very wealthy. Even then, I'd probably opt for something on the used market and save 10K-15K right away. As soon as you drive a new vehicle off the showroom floor you lose thousands. But I agree, the smaller bikes are way overpriced like anything else unless you browse the used market and find someone wanting to unload it cheap. They're out there.
@Trekopolis another thing that I think about every time I look at getting back into motorcycles is that 5 or $6,000 is a lot of gas money, and those Americans spending $65,000 on an SUV are not the ones who are really concerned about the price of gas. The guy driving a 15 year old Corolla is

That wasn't my plan, but it's working out to be that way so it's a blessing in disguise.
@@Trekopolis nothing wrong with living your life 😀
For highways/freeways you need a 250cc minimum. For 5-6k you can get an entry level motorcycle that will be better suited for highways. Scooters are not bad they're just more of a niche market and America is still not a scooter country. In Thailand the honda pcx new is $2k. For Americans to buy these they will need to be similarly priced.
Now my brother for a long time lived in a small city of about 2000 people and he drove a 50cc scooter all over the town which was perfect because the speed limit at the top end was 35 mph and then 25 mph in town...
250cc seems good yes, at least for the minimum. 150cc is doable, but not enjoyable for me. I feel like the guys on "Dumb and Dumber" trying to rock the bike to make it go faster.
Cycle gear has nice mesh jackets under $200. There’s one with the patches on it. I think Sedici. It’s nice and good price. Get some decent pants. I found some Kevlar reinforced padded jeans under $100 there. Go in there and look around. They have all kinds. My jeans saved me from breaking my knee when the bike fell on me. They really help.
Appreciate it! I'll check it out thanks.
My 500cc feels slow on the highway. I prefer the 765 street triple for that. It gets fun. Never ever ride my 125cc on the highway.
Can't blame ya there! 125cc on an interstate is tricky. No thanks!
Do you think this ADV would work for a funeral escort service?
Now that's a unique question. Well, it depends on the area I'd imagine. Probably not because the bikes they use require quick speed response, larger (bike/rider) visibility, from what I've seen. Just my opinion. I don't know the requirements. If I were the rider doing that role, I'd prefer something comfortable, powerful, larger, and lower seat height, and more surface area for mounting options like lights, siren, speaker, storage. Most of those bikes are similar to police bikes from what I've seen. 🤔 Great question! Thanks.
Thanks for that response. The quick speed response would be within what the ADV can do. I would think it would be easier to start and stop on something automatic versus manual. Is there room to install a light on the front and back?
@@DavidSingleton-ob5mc May have to get a little creative to install lights. People usually affix a crash bar first, then mount various lights. For the back there are options for luggage carriers that might be suitable to mount things too. Interesting concept though thanks!
I always find it really funny when people are a little more confrontational at the idea of a scooter, listing all the upsides and watch them flounder and say "well it's a little girl bike!" or something along the lines. Which I translate to a defeat. Although that mostly only happens online. I don't think I have ever talked to anyone in person who looked down on them or at least they never expressed it. Few guys seeing a small bike got really nostalgic remembering the days they bombed around on their grandfather's farm on a little dirt bike.
They've not yet matured enough to understand. Give them time. 👍🏼
Did you go ahead and get the Michelin city grip? Where do you get your tires? Recently picked up a nail in rear tire, was able to plug but still very slow leak. Any suggestions would be great.
No, I still run on the stock tires, but I'd probably go with the City Grips 2 when the time comes. From what I've read people notice a difference riding on them. I did a quick search and it looks like you can order them online from popular places. If you have a local motorbike shop that can install them that's what I'm going to do. I don't want to mess with that. You can call around to see what bike dealers would be willing to install them and get a quote. I don't think it would be all that expensive though. Let me know if you do and how the bike rides afterwards for I'd be curious.
Great video but the oil pictured is the wrong oil for this scooter. The Honda GN4 is for motorcycles with a wet clutch. The Honda scooters should run on oil with molly (GN4M). Molly is a friction modifier and will help prolong engine life. Scooters have a dry clutch. Being this video is older im sure you have figured all this out by now. Thanks for taking the time to share this.
This was a question when the video came out and according to the Honda dealership, that oil is what they use at the factory. They came out with a synthetic now. It was confusing for sure and I've switched to another brand.
they don't sell in America cuz this is rich country with good roads and infrastructure and cheap gas. Other countries are usually poorer and shitty with shittier roads. No one has any money in a lot of these countries. Europe is very expensive in general. Gas is double what we pay here or more. So ppl can't afford the gas for anything but tiny cars and scooters.European roads were laid out centuries ago so they're very narrow. Not exactly suited for the latest suv in the states.
You still liking your corbin seat?
Never got one yet for I was only explaining the product. I might one day though.
Is it beginner friendly? For someone transitioning from scooters? (I’m 24, 5’7, 65kgs and ride safely and maturely)
I'd say so, yes. You have to consider a bike's weight, ease of use, maneuverability, and especially shifting with a manual bike. This one I feel covers it all and I'm not just saying that because I did a review on it. I actually think it would make an excellent transition from an automatic if a person wants to ride a manual bike. Most modern, smaller bikes for that matter are not as complicated to operate as people think. A person can adjust fairly quick if they have average coordination and balance. If you struggle with physical limitations, well, that's another story and that's why they make automatics and trikes, etc. Good Luck!
Had many supersport bikes, but now I just want a 400cc single cylinder to ride and have fun. Looking forward to the Husky 401, but this one is bugging me a little… love the frame, speedo, sound and the stock mirrors, but I’m not a fan of the oval gaz tank with the big Triumph decal on it. Would’ve been cool to have a sharper tank with a crest badge on it. Would a give a complete different vibe to it. If you’re looking for a new entry bike, you try to please to youngsters. This bike looks more like a 70s bike to me. 🤷♂️
I get that, makes sense. What I've found is everyone is different and tastes range from all over the spectrum. Some like more classic, vintage style bikes, while others may prefer a more modern look. That's why they make all kinds of bikes to try and appease most people. I still want a Ninja 400! It would be nice to have a half-dozen bikes and ride what my mood feels for that day. My wife would hang me if I tried that stunt.
@@Trekopolis hahaha I feel you ! Talking about Kawi, I’ve been begging them for weeks now to make a KLX400sm out since they’re all boosting up by 100cc their bikes 🤣🫡
I enjoyed your video about this Triumph Speed 400. I feel it would be helpful for prospective buyers to know what the actual out the door price for this bike would be. You are not able to purchase this for $5K. With dealer prep, destination, and TT&L, it is probably closer to $6500 - $7000 out the door? Depends on the fees a dealer charges. The Triumph dealer here close to where I live does not just add dealer prep, they actually include an additional $250 uncrating fee, and the destination charges are double what other charge. The reason for this is because, according to them, it costs them more than the factory listed destination fee to ship the crates back.
All good points and I'll definitely look into explaining those things in future releases, thank you. 👍🏼

@@Trekopolis why do you think?
@@MrTkshiu Cost to produce vs demand. In America they'd have to make enough profit and I don't see that happening due to many other choices. It's all about money for companies.
