I know this game was played in Miami, but how a first year bowl landed two top-10 teams is beyond me! And how these two were left out of major bowls is beyond me too. I remember the MLK controversy with the Fiesta Bowl that opened the door for a Louisville-Alabama matchup. But Notre Dame went to the Orange and Penn State beat Notre Dame in South Bend. Virginia went to the Sugar Bowl after falling from 7-0 to 8-3. Nebraska got the Citrus vs Georgia Tech and both these teams were better than Nebraska. Go Figure!

Tommy Frazier developed a blood clot in his leg, or Michael Vick would have been second page news. Frazier's moves and speed were incredible. It was how quickly he picked up speed after the cut. Today, still nothing comparable. I hope the coaches at Maynard Evans H.S. in Orlando, Fla. Still show this. Best of luck guys!

I have this game on DVD. Listen to the commentators as they change their tunes. Other than the slaughter that happened, it's completely hilarious to listen to them back peddle.

Steve Spurrier should have kept his mouth shut. I have copies of sports illustrated, the week before and the week after, in frames. He was talkin' smack and he was buried by the greatest college football team that's ever been assembled. Howdy Doody was overrated. The Nebraska defense and their running game destroyed Florida. Tommy Frazier, Lawrence Phillips was like watching Gayle Sayers and Barry Sanders on the same team.

Careful careful Stephen, the big ten is ridiculous about copyright, and we don’t want to lose your channel again….on a side note, this game features a head coach (Joe Paterno) and future head coach (Northwestern linebacker Pat Fitzgerald) that trashed their careers by allowing heinous behavior on the part of players and coaches to go on under their watch

This is almost exactly one year after Arizona State had probably the worst defensive performance in major college football history. Against the same team. And they came back with probably the best defensive performance in major college history. I don't understand anything sometimes.

@31:21 The announcer says the defense of name is Pac-Man because he gobbles it up(Pearl) If I remember correctly back when Pearl was playing for Boys & Girls HS. The sports section of the NY Daily News would read Pac-Man gobbles up 55 points. The Pac-Man name came from his offense not defense.

This game almost wasn't televised. The Supreme Court's ruling striking down the NCAA's full control of TV rights came in late June and there was a mad scramble to organize rights packages which came down to two main groups: the Big 10 & Pac-10 with CBS, and the CFA (basically everybody else) with ABC. Incredibly, the season started with no provision on what to do TV-wise if a CFA team played a Big 10 or Pac-10 team. ABC threatened to sue, claiming they had exclusive rights to all CFA teams, while CBS had to file an injunction to get the game aired. Things got settled eventually but 1984 was a crazy, crazy year in college football broadcasting and that's just one kooky story.
