    2017 Subaru outback I just changed oil & filter and put 5 qts Not the 5.1 It recommended and check the dipstick. And it seemed way too full and I drained the oil very well and let it sit. It didn't seem like they'd had this problem before when I previously changed the oil. But this time it's showing that it's too full and I know it didn't go crazy. And put too much oil in it cause all I had was the 5 qt jug. IDK 🤔

    I though about that, or the space station, etc, but I know it was not the space station because I've seen it before and it has a totally different path across the sky and it's no were near as bright as this thing. There is no way to really show just how bright it was and the light was non-uniform. Satellites reflect light and it's pretty much a point of light. This thing was a true fireball.

    My Boxer "flat six" 3.6R engine burns quite a bit of oil--BUT, can you see the good side of it? I, for one, check it often and top it off, often, so it is always full and all the time getting fresh oil. THAT is why my oil never gets jet black, it is always being changed if you think about it. No, I'm not saying that is good, just that side of it, is good.

    To my knowledge, this is a feature of all Subarus. I’ve driven 91 Legacy thru 2013 Impreza, and everything in between. Currently have an 07 Impreza and 08 Outback XT, both do it. If you put the dipstick in with the finger hole facing you, you read the left side of it where the letters are (the front) and that is your reading.

    I have a 2015 Outback and yesterday I did a left U turn on a back road and didn’t realize there was a sharp drop where the asphalt meets the dirt and my two right tires dropped out and I heard a thump. I was worried it would throw my wheels out of alignment or off balance. Wheels seem to be fine, but the orange oil light and “!” lit up on my dashboard. I pulled over and didn’t see anything leaking from bottom of car and when I checked the dipstick the oil went up a few inches so that seems ok. I drove home fine. Today when I started up my Outback the orange oil light did not light up until 5 min into my driving. And every time I turn ignition and drive it takes a few minutes to turn on. A couple questions: 1) For those of you who have had your oil warning ⚠️ light come on and actually have a leak, is it on immediately when you start up your car or is there always a delay for you? 2) If my dipstick is showing oil and I don’t see a leak, is it possible that the thump from driving off the asphalt could have just randomly triggered the warning light? Thanks in advance for any feedback 🙏🏼

  • @stickman-1
    @stickman-15 ай бұрын

    The oil light comes on when there is no (over very low) oil pressure. I've seen 3psi, 5psi and 10psi mentioned on the internet as the trigger point, but I think it's 3 or 5 myself. So when your tires went off the road the vehicle tipped and the suction the oil pump sucked air for a second, thus the pressure dropped and you had oil starvation for a few seconds. Once you got level again, it was covered in oil and everything was okay. However there are some issues here: #1 I would be surprised just tipping the vehicle that much cause the pickup to be uncovered. To me, you must have been also a little low on oil. #2. There was an issue with some older Suby's having the oil pickup break. So I would really recommend getting an actual gauge in the car. #3. It's also possible that the oil pan might be dented up. It might be hard to see w/o getting under the car and checking. But the oil pickup is pretty close to the pan, I think there is about 3/8"-1/2" there. So if it was dented up more than 1/4" it could restrict flow. I would look for scraps in the pan to be sure. I have both oil and fuel pressure gauges and would never drive w/o them. They really give you a lot of feedback.

    @@stickman-1 Thanks so much for sharing this insight. Oil pressure psi, oil pickups / pans, and these gauges you speak of are far beyond my mechanical understanding so I'm thinking I should just take it to a good mechanic or even the Suby repair shop for a professional evaluation.

    @@stickman-1 Ok Subaru service center evaluated it and it was just low on oil. You were right. They found no damage to sensor or oil pan etc. I find it strange it was low since I still had over 1k miles left until my next oil change and I get my changes done at a reputable lube place. In retrospect I should’ve first just gone to a local mechanic, as Subaru charged me a ridiculously high $$ inspection fee. 😏

    Well Subarus are known for burning oil. It has to do with the flat engine design. There is nothing we can do but just monitor it all the time. Some people report burning 1 qt every 3K miles, some every 6K miles and some say never. I think it depends on each engine and how the car is driven. So just get into the habit of checking it the first of every month. Keep a log and after several months you'll probably see a pattern. From there just follow the pattern. Ie, if it's low every month, go to checking every other week. But if it's stable from month to month, you can try every other month. But to be honest. I'd do it a min. of every month. :-) Good luck with it. @@jblo76

  • @stickman-1
    @stickman-1 Жыл бұрын

    The issue is not the filling/changing of oil. Suby's are know to be oil burners (all flat engine designs are). The problem is checking in between changes to make sure you have not burned any oil since the last change.
