    Thank you for posting this Donna. It is so great to see the origins of the sport I love most in this world. I am 21 years old and paddling in a time when the technology and perception of whitewater kayaking is so vastly different, yet, the culture and values remain the same. I have so much respect and admiration for the athletes of that time. Nothing will ever be better than whitewater kayaking and it fills me with joy to know that folks have felt this way for decades.

    I remember watching this with some high school friends, probably around 1985 or 1986. They were kayakers and, as Idahoans, felt a strong affinity to Dr. Blackadar, Rob Lesser, and John Wasson. This brings back great memories!

    i dont know if you still read these comments donna, but in my opinion this is one of the people that have been able to tap into the human soul in its essence with music alone, we dont even remotely agree with eachother on the political spectrum which should speak to the universalism of music as it is. god bless everyone that views this video

    Anyone else here learn to paddle in a Lettman Mark IV kayak like Walt Blackadar was using? Got my Lettman in 78 the same year Walt got pinned in his.

  • @DonnaMcMasterRiver
    @DonnaMcMasterRiver3 жыл бұрын

    Do you still have your Lettman? I started rafting in 1979 but didn’t learn to kayak until 1987 in a Dancer. Lars Holbek was my first instructor, and couldn’t have been more patient with us newbies!

    @@DonnaMcMasterRiver I moved to a flyin remote area in 1983, sold my Dancer and left the Lettman with a friend to store. She had me put it under the power lines on her place as it was supposedly very safe there. Unfortunately during the winter a plow came to clear the snow and ran over it. I didn't know Blackadar, but I was in a race with one of his proteges who was staring at my boat. I asked him what was up and he had been with Walt when he wrapped his boat. The boat didn't break the way we thought fiberglass kayaks would.

    It's almost spooky to see someone get thrashed in a hole so bad that it carries their name forever afterwards. I had the privilege of knowing Tom and Irene Murphy, who did some of the pioneering runs down the North Fork Payette with John Wasson, Rob Lesser, Dr. Blackadar and Doug Ammons.

    Years ago Bobby appeared at the Tampa Theater alone on a bare stage. He blew our minds! At one point, he said he needed a chorus on-stage, and invited basses to come up. I told our then teenaged son that he'd never have a chance like this, and he was among the first on stage. Then tenors, altos, and sopranos. Bobby said "I need a few more basses," so I got on the back row to let my son have the thrill of front row status. Bobby scatted with the three other sections one at a time, then came over to the basses. He shared the mic with our son, who kept singing the riff Bobby had given us while he scatted. What a memory! Bobby is a genius musical magician.

    Wasn't that an intentional paddle spin to hand roll?

  • @NChillbilly
    @NChillbilly7 ай бұрын

    That was because of all the paddle twirling. Unnecessary and costly around the 12 minute mark. Those guys had balls of steel. Never seen a paddler pop riveting his outfitting like that. With today's newer boat and paddle designs it has really made things easier.

  • @LeftCoast_TomP
    @LeftCoast_TomP23 күн бұрын

    Personally would not want to kayak with someone who was doing a cocky paddle twirl right before hitting a big hydraulic. Maybe there was a big pool below that we cant see. You just jeopardize the other kayakers having to deal with a possible swimmer. What people wont do when the camera is rolling - same as now. I would complete a first decent and then maybe on the second go start doing tricks.
