MB_EDC

MB_EDC

This channel focusses on urban, travel and countryside EDC and tips.
I look at the small items that make a big difference in helping you navigate modern life in simple, confident competence.

By EDC - I mean - Everyday Carry, Everyday Convenience & Everyday Competence

EDC starts with pocket carry and extends out into useful tips, tools and toolkits. It includes anything that makes life a little easier. I show a range of equipment reviews and ideas to help better prepare for everyday and unusual situations that crop up as we go about our lives. This includes some everyday tech for non-techies as well. I am based in the UK so you won't see any guns or large lock knives.

As a modern man/traveller/Dad/Grandad I have a lot of life experience with some suitable and usefull ideas for everyone. I know that EDC is often more of a boy's (man's) interest and I will try to make sure that the videos interest women as well. I really welcome all comments helping me to get better.

    Does the light go on when in the pocket and drain the battery?

  • @MB_EDC

    It doesn't seem to. The battery lasts for a long time. You need to keep press the shield emblem for the light to come on and hold it. As soon as you release the shield the light goes off.

    They all come with a burr, yes... but that's a two-minute fix with a strop and they're truly great knives after that. Amazingly slicey, super-comfortable handle, very light weight, easy to maintain, a range of sizes for all occasions (a six in your pocket, an eight in the backpack), a choice of steels, and ... so cheap you don't have to worry about them. The stiffness of the opening is a feature to make sure there's no play in the blade when it's open, it's important with a wooden handle like this. If you have no fingernails or want to open it fast there's a trick called the "coup du savoyard". Relegating them to "gardening" because of a burr on the edge seems like a huge fail.

    I always feel deprived that I cannot carry a Leatherman in the UK. Another tool that is often overlooked is the Swiss Card by Victorinox - designed to go in the wallet. The blade in it is tiny and the handle quite flimsy, however technically it is a fixed blade and would therefore be illegal.

    Someone finally did this, WOW. here is my 2 cents: As a seasoned backpacker and traveler, I've put a bunch of sporks through their paces over the last 30 years - probably close to a dozen. Here's my take on the top contenders: MSR Folding Spork This spork reigns supreme for its ultimate portability. It collapses down neatly to fit in even the most cramped corners of your pack, and it boasts a space for attaching to a carabiner, ribbon, or rope. Plus, the spoon can handle heat without getting your fingers toasty. It's a reliable spork that's earned a spot in both my auto emergency kit and camping cook set. Also Great: Sea to Summit Folding Spork The Sea to Summit spork is my go-to backup. It's another foldable option that comes in a close second to the MSR. Solid Option (But Not for Winter): Light My Fire Spork The Light My Fire spork was not comfortable in my hand during regular use, it unfortunately succumbed to the brutal winter elements on a cold-weather camping trip. The extreme cold made it brittle and prone to breaking. If frigid temperatures aren't on your agenda, this spork might be worth considering, but keep in mind how weather conditions can affect its durability. One to Avoid The Tokes folding spork was a total letdown. It was stiff and clunky to open and close, making for a frustrating user experience.

  • @MB_EDC

    Interesting video. There is a lot of crossover between what one needs for a bike and a tool kit generally. Point taken. Note, they make a kit like this with a chain tool included but I'd prefer this with Pedro's multifunction chain tool that gives you spoke wrenches among other things. I like stand alone bike tools in preference to the SAK like ones with fold out tools that predominate. I especially like my chain tools stand alone. If that's the case fold out type tools irk me less, might even make more sense in terms of lost bits. I must admit I have a fondness for Leatherman's and bits with the extension, the thin type bit at one end and regular bit receiver at other end ones or the kind that fit on Rebars or Fuse, Kick etcetera with the square shaped Phillips shaft you put a bit fitting on. The lightest option probably is a Skeletool with the bits you need. Pliers are pretty handy to have generally. Driving bits is the bonus. It's easy to take the Skeletool clipped to your pocket. I also have a soft spot for the old bone wrenches over sockets with bike kits.

  • @MB_EDC
    @MB_EDC13 күн бұрын

    Thanks for taking the time to comment. I'm not a huge leatherman fan and have the Rebar, but it's not legal carry in the UK. Although as part of a bike repair kit it might be OK when cycling. I like having separate tools where I can and have a couple of videos on pocket toolkits. It is rumoured that Victorinox will be bringing out some blade-less multitools. Possibly with one aimed at cyclists. Now that could be interesting if they get it right.

  • @michaelkulman7095
    @michaelkulman709513 күн бұрын

    @@MB_EDC In your country I'd try to get ahold of an old Kick, no locking blade, and the bit kit they still sell for it or an old knifeless Fuse or, brace yourself, I'd get the cheapest Leatherman I could that still drives bits and snap off the knife blade! Or if you have the tools remove it and maybe add a file or other tool. I know snapping off a blade seems extreme but if it gives you what you want then so be it. Snap, cut, whatever...remove it if it's a locking blade and or one handed or whatever your laws require. A folding pair of pliers that can drive bits with a lot of torque when handles are at 90 degree angles from each other is nothing to sneeze at or dismiss! It's just an opinion. Some might say look at the new Bond tool as well... I'd contrast Bond with an old Kick in your country.

    @michaelkulman709513 күн бұрын

    @@MB_EDC I forgot, they make a knifeless Rebar and a bit kit for it. Some tools, like Skeletool I think have fasteners that one can find bits to remove rather easily. I think removing the blade from Skeletool makes a lot of sense. If you won't use the pocket clip remove that too. I've always sort of been blaise about blades on multitools as I would usually just carry a knife as a preference, a preference one can tailor to your location as you have to do.

  • @michaelkulman7095
    @michaelkulman709513 күн бұрын

    @@MB_EDC@MB_EDC Also consider: In the UK a blade-less multitool seems like it would be appealing. I mean a bunch of locking tools and you can just carry any non- locking knife you like maybe a SAK Compact if your tool doesn't have scissors for example or a SAK Walker if your multitool doesn't have a saw, or a SAK Waiter so you can open a beer or bottle of wine without getting a bigger tool out... There is still a tool-less Rebar and there used to be a tool-less Fuse or get a SOG and just remove the knife, replace it with something else if you wish as they sell individual impliments. If you could find a Leatherman Leap it allows you to remove the knife and is lightweight... Also there was a Leatherman Kick that had no locking blades including the knife and some (few) had pocket clips (sold separately). It just had screwdrivers, a knife and of course and plier head but it was light. Speaking of old tools if one could find a PST, PST 2, Sideclip, or even a Gerber MPT (copy of PST) they'd all work in the UK I believe. Personally I feel I need a needle nose pliers and things like a file and scissors are highly desirable do I may be drawn to the Leatherman type tools more than you. Certainly the Knipex are better for a lot of things though. So I hope I gave you some UK friendly ideas to ponder...

    As a former obsessed knife nut, I can say the classic is my most carried and used pocket knife. In my 30's and early 40's I was the obsessed knife collector, and had quite an extensive accumulation of knives. From a bunch of Randall's to high end folders. By age 50, I was questioning what the heck was I doing with all this junk??? Sold off all of it, kept a few Swiss Army knives for general pocket duty. Since about the late 1990's, the humble little classic has been my true EDC pocket knife. I don't hunt, but I do enjoy the heck out of fishing. The classic cuts monofilament fishing line with easy. For actually cleaning of the catch, I use the Victorinox serrated edge paring knife that's in the tackle box, that cleans up with a bit of dunking in the river. But for everyday knocking around the typical American suburbia that I live in, the classic does it all. Opens plastic packages, snips, files, and the tweezers have plucked burrs from between my dogs paw pads. The SD tip of the nail file works great on small and medium Phillips screws, and I have used that tool to fix a stalled out Vespa motor scooter on a dirt road in the middle nowhere, fixed the control arm on an outboard motor on a boat at the other end of a long and winding lake, and a doorknob assembly on an air B&B in Key West. That SD tip is a fantastic tool. The knife blade is big enough for all that package opening, plus cutting the jute twine I use out back in the garden for the tomato and pepper plants. Great little pocket knife!!!!

    SOmehow - I had overlooked this in my recent rediscovery of pocket knives. I think because I came across the Midnite Manager and that is my EVERY day 5th pocket carry. I see this as being useful if I am out in the wet and don't want to risk My Midnite manger flashlight/battery getting wet.. The Classic SD is bomb-proof.

    @@MB_EDC The Midnite Manager is a great SAK, and the lite is a very nice touch. But wet conditions is what worried me, as for most of my life I lived in Maryland, and spent a huge amount of time on the Chesapeake Bay sailing, or in the rivers close by on some kind of small boat. I was worried about the contacts getting wet as often I had spray on me, or in the case of kayaks, water leaking in around the spray skirt. So I carried a small single AAA keychain flashlight that was O-ring sealed with a depth rating of 12 feet.

    @@Jackknife1951 Good call. I mostly work from home or in an office so the MM is perfect. But for wet winter walks I leave it at home. I always have an i3E EOS on my keychain. Really handy and the AAA battery lasts ages for occasional use.
