    Hi, absolutely! Is you have an early version of the Piston Pro X with the magnetic cable connector, this is the cable you’ll need if you’re using it with a Pivot V2: shop.kuat.com/Piston-Wiring-Harness-Extension However, let it be known KUAT has since updated the Piston Pro X to have a fixed flat-four cable; if you have that version this is the cable extension you’ll need: shop.kuat.com/Car-to-Rack-Electrical-Cable Also, thank you so much for watching the videos; at the end of the day I’m a consumer too, so it always means a lot to know they’ve been helpful.

    Hey, thank you very much for the kind words. In fact, it’s because I couldn’t find anything during my own research and I thought I had something to share to the community that I created this video. I should also note, though I haven’t uploaded in a while, I do promise I have more content coming and people taking the time to express their gratitude honestly really motivates me more than anything. To answer your question, yes - I find FOX’s sizing to be consistent across their entire lineup (if you’re a ‘medium’ in one thing, you are a ‘medium’ in everything) as well as offering what I call ‘aspirational’ fitment in that they are very fitted to the body. This is actually a good thing as it prevents the garments from flapping around but it’s less good if you’ve gained a few pounds.

Crazy life now with helping elderly parents, one with Alzheimer’s. I woke up this morning realizing that OUR BIKES HAVE REAR RACKS AND FENDERS! How are they going to work on our $1500 rack?!?!? • @GREYWOLFbike

    KUAT sells a ‘fender kit’ which essentially consists of two straps. I’ve used rubber VOLE ski straps to transport bikes with full fenders. If you’re going to do this regularly, I highly recommend purchasing some VOLE strap keepers as well. They keep the loose tail from flapping around as well as reduce the likelihood of it releasing because the strap is doubled-over on itself.

    Mate you need to unbolt the rear caliper in order to obtain a hose line more conducive of bubble travel. Unbolt it and let it hang and then there's no chance bubbles will get stuck in the caliper or the line. As it is, you're pushing the fluid across the caliper, then the issue is the fluid moving DOWN the line before it travels up to the leaver. Unbolt the caliper, always.

    Great video. We're also in AB and use a rooftop tent, and I'll be watching your Pivot video momentarily.. full tailgate access is required for a super pacific with drawer system. I feel like for a two-bike tray with swing out, the Piston Pro (non-X) for 2k CAD will come out ahead of 1600 CAD + shipping + taxes for the 1up. I think I can live without brake lights & kashima, especially after reading all the comments regarding electrical issues.

  • @GREYWOLFbike
    @GREYWOLFbike3 ай бұрын

    Yeah, the electrical issues are real but actually quite straightforward. The way the brake lights get their power is through a contact interface with spring-loaded pins (same as an iPad and keyboard). There’s a rubber seal around the connector but it’s insufficient to prevent water ingress (likely during power washing). This results in the contact surface developing surface corrosion. I’ve honestly been meaning to make a video about the electrical issues and service but I got denied for being a KUAT ambassador despite them asking me to apply, then my Crankworx videos absolutely tanked, and I’m still struggling with my 6-year old iPad crashing while attempting to edit videos. All that combined felt like a kick in the teeth and I really lost a lot of motivation. That said, it’s probably for the best because I’ve decided to stop chasing the weekly videos (that was a 2023 goal) and instead focus on developing the long-format videos I’ve always wanted to make. It means a lot more time filming and editing and fewer videos overall, but I hope people will appreciate the quality over quantity. Anyway, the fix for the electrical issue is just remove the tray, use a little abbrasive to clean the surface, and maybe hit it with some dielectric grease to resist the water. You can also go the full extent of replacing the entire wiring with a free kit from KUAT, but personally I don’t plan to do this.

  • @GREYWOLFbike
    @GREYWOLFbike3 ай бұрын

    Hey, great question. KUAT offers a ‘fender kit’ which consists of two straps. :S It’s pretty low tech, but what you do is lower the tire bracket below the fender and then strap the wheel to the arm because the contact point is not able to hold the bike in this position. Personally, I like VOLE straps and if you get the ‘strap keepers’ for $5, the probability of them coming undone would be exceptionally low while also being kind to your wheels.

  • @GREYWOLFbike
    @GREYWOLFbike3 ай бұрын

Are you looking to add or remove negative volume spacers?

I upped the sag to 20% vs the recommended 30% and I'm still using too much travel. The shock is kind've lame, it's the Super Deluxe select plus so it doesn't have any compression adjustment beyond just air pressure. Going to see what the tokens give me and if they're not cutting it, I'll contact Vorsprung in Whistler as they are the premiere suspension nerds! Haha

  • @GREYWOLFbike
    @GREYWOLFbike3 ай бұрын

    That’s super unfortunate it doesn’t have any compression adjustments. Here’s a few key points to consider: - RockShox recommends using a Linear can on a bike with a progressive leverage curve and a Progressive can on a bike with a linear leverage curve - Bottomless Tokens are what you’re going to want to use to resist ‘blowing through’ your travel and bottoming-out the shock as their effect is only later in the travel - Adding Bottomless Tokens = more resistance in bottoming the shock - If you had it, high-speed compression is what would resist the compression forces and thus excessive shock travel (for you, it sounds like you’re 100% reliant on the spring rate/air pressure in the shock) - Negative Volume Tokens only adjust the amount of force required to get your suspension moving (consider it like and extra force or the same as carrying extra weight helping to compress the shock easier) - The more Negative volume = the more ‘helping force’ = easier to get the shock to start compressing - The less Negative volume = less ‘helping force’ = more force required to get the shock compressing

I actually just finished replying to another comment saying how I had applied (and was turned-down) to be a KUAT ambassador, so like you - I’m just a regular consumer. And as a consumer, I just want companies to make the products I want to buy (lol). I could be wrong, but I actually think the Piston Pro X is the most expensive hitch-mount bike rack on the market, so yeah - like you, I don’t want to spend my money on something that’s not going to live-up to expectations. It’s perhaps worth noting that one core principle I hold for all the GREYWOLF channels is to only feature products I like and would recommend to others. That’s not to say products won’t appear in other videos (such as installing a new accessory or something), but I have intentionally not published product reviews on things I don’t recommend. It’s sort of my way of avoiding publishing a negative review so I can walk the fine line between honest feedback and not alienating myself from companies that do make great products, maybe just not the one I used.

    The back of my KPPX rack looks different, the wire cannot be removed. I wonder if they changed the design based of negative feedback about the wire bending?

  • @GREYWOLFbike
    @GREYWOLFbike4 ай бұрын

    Hey, this is exactly what they did. I wasn’t the first to raise the concern to them. I believe they also changed the wiring of the trays (previously a pin connector, now hardwire).

    100%. I love how quickly and easily it is to add and remove bikes from the rack and I especially love the two points of contact. I believe KUAT has changed is wiring by eliminating the fancy magnetic plug and even the fancy pin-connects between the trays and the main body . I understand it improves reliability but I also know they are less-expensive and less-premium design decisions despite the MSRP remaining the same, so that I don’t love. But taking into consideration all factors, yes - 100%. I would purchase again.

    So I had a chance to try my Piston Pro this winter to get to the trails in Edmonton's river valley. I would have to rate this rack totally unsuitable for winter riding. The reason being is that the pistons stop functioning at anything past about -5C. The arms move but they won't click into place so the bike can't be secured to the rack making it totally useless. In addition to that, the studded 45 North Dillinger 5's on my fatbike and Schwalbe Ice Piker Pros on my ebike just shred the powder coated finish even after I put down several layers of duct tape to protect it. So much for my almost $3000 rack. I ended up using my wife's $500 Swagman rack for winter riding.

    This is really interesting for two reasons; first, I intentionally left the rack on all last year for durability testing and didn’t once experience issues. In fact, I drove to Bellingham, WA and back in -15˚C and never experienced any issues, so I’m honestly not sure what to suggest. Was there excessive snow or ice build-up on the rack? Second, yes - studded tires and painted surfaces aren’t a great combo. Instead of duct-tape, my suggestion would be to get a roll of 2” wide ‘grip tape’. I have some from Amazon and it’s basically 120grit sandpaper with an adhesive back. This will resist the spikes a lot better than soft tapes and it’ll still work in the summer with non-studded tires.

    @@GREYWOLFbike I don't know why the arms wouldn't work either. Maybe the oil in the pistons was affected by the cold. When I put the rack in the garage to warm up then the function came back.

    Is the pro frame and pro frame rs the same size? I came from a large bell downhill helmet and bought a fox pro frame but the large was not a tight fit like my other helmet so I’m trying to figure out if the pro frame and pro frame rs is the same size because I’ll need to go to a size medium due to it moves if I shake my head

  • @GREYWOLFbike

    Hey, if I remember correctly, the Proframe runs small compared to other FOX helmets whereas the Proframe RS is true to size. I don’t have any experience with Bell helmets to comment, sorry.

    Very nice and helpful review. Thank you! I am seriously considering buying a bike travel case and I am hesitating between the EVOC Pro and the Thule Roundtrip MTB. Can you comment on how much space there is left in the Thule case to fit other stuff, like a full-face helmet, pads, shoes, etc. Thanks!

    LOL! I cannot confirm nor deny I successfully flew with my bike, pedals, tools, flip flops, a PFD/lifejacket, water shoes, towel, pillow, and two jars of pomegranate paste in bubble wrap. …and a few other items I’m sure. However, I DO NOT recommend placing your helmet in the case even though there is protection. I always carry mine onboard with me to ensure it did not experience any impacts. Thanks for the kind words. :)

    Thanks for the thorough review, really appreciate it. I have few questions though. Does a 29er with XL frame fit in that bag? does it exceed weight size limit? or you just paid the standard fees and you're good to go?

  • @GREYWOLFbike

    Hey, thanks for the kind words. At the end of the day, I’m a consumer too, but I’m also really passionate about good product design. Re: the XL frame size, someone else commented they experienced fitment issues but I believe they suggested removing the rear derailleur was a solution. Obviously not ideal, but given the alternative I think it could be worse. If you aren’t sure, just order from a reputable source with a good return policy. I purchased mine directly from the THULE website.

    @@GREYWOLFbike Thanks for the information. I just ordered it from THULE, I'll give it a try and see if it fits. I have a giant trance 29er with XL frame, which is a big bike. I'm kinda limited with the options out there. Also, It seems to me no matter what you do, it'll always be above weight limit. Unless if I put some of the heavy parts in another bag i.e. pedals,, chain, derailleur, seat post, handlebar, tools etc... that could bring the weight down drastically.

    I'm a bit late to the discussion. We love our Pivot V2 and use it with a truck camper with the tailgate down which is a good reason to have it set up like yours. However, we have a different bike rack which hung out even more than yours. Luckily I have access to a shop and was able to shorten the neck of the bike rack and drill a new hole for the pin.

    Hey, thanks for taking the time to comment and share your experience. I’ve spent a bit of time considering how I might modify it to bring the bike rack closer to the vehicle, but I fear it would probably be easier to start with a full redesign. Re: cutting the shank on the rack itself, KUAT has a VERY nice anti-wobble system which uses a wedge at the end and it would also destroy any resale value, so I won’t be going that route myself.

  • @GREYWOLFbike
    @GREYWOLFbike6 ай бұрын

    Hey, thanks for taking the time to comment. Keep in mind, this is more of a ‘rack system’ than a rack itself. The Piston Pro X alone does not stick out far, only when coupled with the Pivot V2. Nevertheless, I agree. It’s my hope to work with KUAT to develop a V3 with multiple insertion depths to bring things back closer to vehicles where a rear spare tire is not a factor.
