    Oliver Watching you run this one I have to ask are you part bionic? I’m flabbergasted how you can run such a piece and blow by so many people in your heat. I am amazed you are such a gifted athlete. What gets me is the hat you compete with yourself and the clock it’s amazing the drive in the ambition in the gumption you have to push yourself against the clock. I’ve never seen anyone so competitive with them self. You really are an inspiration. To watch with the human body can do such a brutal beating of obstacles and running and your gait and your breathing doesn’t seem to change very much! Bless you man, you are truly a cut above the rest. Stay strong brother. Matt in Colorado

    Oliver, we are just in the beginning stages. did the tough mudder up in SnowMass Colo two weeks ago. So we are not hard core, but we are hooked on these types of runs. Dont know if I will ever get to the level of a beast. But I am not wired to compete as a runner, rather the challange and the finish. However, your video shows what the human body is capable of. My wife and I are considerin the Spartan in Fort Carson next year. In the meantime, we will train. Stay strong... Matt Colorado

  • @Nomo_Popo
    @Nomo_Popo6 жыл бұрын

    The breathing just adds more realism to the experience (even though it is real anyway) I would try without any music to be fully immersed, but I understand wanting to have it. It's not that the music is bad, it's because it's a short loop and if it was quieter then maybe it wouldn't matter anymore.... I'm not sure! I would just go for either quieter or none imo. Hearing the environment is the best sound imo. But thanks again just for making it and props for doing the race!

  • @olivergerl
    @olivergerl6 жыл бұрын

    I agree that the original ambient sound would be the best choice, but since I have to speed up the video in parts (otherwise the Super and Beast races are just too long to watch) it does not fit anymore (or at least it sounds a bit funny and distracting). Let's see what I can come up with for my next race - the Colorado Ultra. :) Thanks for watching and the feedback!

    I'm using a GoPro Hero 4 Session and have been pretty happy with it, except for the fact that since it's so small you cannot actually swap batteries but have to charge it once it's empty - so no recording of more that 2 1/2 hours (which is why I always have to finish so fast ;) ). The size and weight are great though. But I guess I will upgrade to one with swappable battery before my upcoming Ultra (I'm pretty certain I cannot do that under 2 1/2 hours ;) ).

    Oliver Gerl agreed. The physical part was taxing but it had nothing on the mud. I was sick of mud and water at mile 2.5. About six people in my heat lost shoes and I walked half a mile back to my car barefoot because my shoes had clumps of mud which made them useless after the race.

    I’m going to train for the spartan race. Any tips?

  • @olivergerl
    @olivergerl6 жыл бұрын

    It depends on which format you're doing: 1. For a Sprint I would recommend to train your grip strength to minimize your penalty chances for obstacles like twister, multi rig and monkey bars. It's also a good idea to understand and learn the proper technique for the rope climb (without the ability to give your arms a break while holding onto the rope with only your feet you either fail or need to have really, really strong arms). 2. If your going for the Super you also need to work on your stamina for the longer distance and I'd recommend doing hill runs as well. 3. For a Beast it's all of the above but now you definitely want to work on your hill performance, as those races consist mostly of up- and downhill segments, with very little flat terrain. And obviously further increased endurance is necessary.

    The funny thing is I did only noticed that that band was supposed to go round your ankles, when I ran off and saw someone else with it. When I picked up the rope I thought it was a headband that someone lost - that’s why I picked it up and threw it out of my way :) But I can assure you that I kept my ankles tight together the whole time even without the band :)

    I just read your comments about the penalty laps, I saw a Spartan video the day before the race that included the course designer and he explained there would be penalty laps on 2 obstacles in place of burpees, they were Mt. Olympus and the twister.

  • @olivergerl
    @olivergerl6 жыл бұрын

    As much as I would habe liked to pass these obstacles properly I have to say that I like the idea of penalty laps instead of burpees. Overall it might have taken longer to do those laps, than to crunch out 30 burpees, but I find it usually very frustrating when you’re fighting hard to finish one of those hanging obstacles, but when you ultimately fail and then have to do a punishment that relies on the same arm strenght, hurting now even more.

    Thanks for posting this, I liked your Big Bear Spartan race which I did. I like the Sacramento terrain much better.

  • @olivergerl
    @olivergerl6 жыл бұрын

    Yeah, the course was definitely easier (it had almost no hills, right), but the nasty thing about Sacramento is always that the ground consists mostly of potholes (due to it usually being a cattle ranch I guess) and one has to be really carefull and always watch their steps even when runing on even terrain.

    What do you do about battery life? Do you carry an extra or two with you? Cause i did a Tough Mudder last year with my GoPro and had to bring an extra battery but it was a pain trying to keep it dry, and the zipper to the pouch I used was filled with sand. I'm curious what solutions others might be using out there.

  • @olivergerl
    @olivergerl6 жыл бұрын

    For this race I didn’t have to use any additional battery pack, since I finished under 2 hours, which is about the usual time my GoPro Session lasts. I do however have on pack (Sabrent Extended Battery), which I can generally recommend, as it adds another 2 - 2 1/2 hours. The big downside to this is (at least the two times I used it till now) is however, that I cannot connect the pack right from the start, as it drained the battery immediately, leaving me with about 2 1/2 hours recording time all together. If you can switch housings during the race (since the extended battery won’t fit the normal housing) and only attach the battery pack once the GoPro runs out you shoul however be able to really double tiur recording time.
