If you're standing and looking at the fuel injection pump there is sort of a barrel-shaped attachment on the right side. Inside there is a rubber diaphragm. They often go bad. If there is a small crack in it it will cause it to run rough and smoke a lot. It is quite likely that is at least part of your problem. It's easy to buy the part online and probably only takes 15 or 20 minutes to put it in since it will be your first time.

Does not blow much oil smoke maybe crankcase breather needs cleaning ,and a couple of heat cycles, run for forty mins let cool repeat . If a ring or two are stuck they may free up with work.

I knew it, I knew it then I saw the verse at the end and I was correct. Thank you for proclaiming The Lord. We had a 80 series Land Cruiser left behind by some Austrian friends 15 years ago in our shed, They returned in May this year and we got it going. It gradualy woke up with every job we did and came back to life. It is now touring Australia again they are on their second adventure with it. Dave.

Careful cold starting/ using ether on that, those engines love to bend the pushrods over. The mechanical fuel pumps on those also have a habit of leaking diesel down into the crankcase oil, so keep an eye on that

That truck isn't a '48, '48s had painted grilles, and that truck has a chrome grille, which would make it a '49 or a '50. Give it a carb rebuild, that old flathead will probably sing again. WD-40 actualy stands for Water Displacement 40%, to my understanding, why you would only want to displace 40% of water I'm not sure, but I believe it was developed for NASA originally. that engine may be a Mercury engine (or at least it has Merc heads on it lol), which, even with the metal in the oil, especially since it sounds half decent when it was trying to run, would make it a pretty good candidate for an overhaul.

WD stands for Water Displacement and 40 is for it took them 40 tries to get it right, they got it wrong 39 times before finally getting it right. People think it is a lubricant or a penetrating oil but it is not, it was designed to displace water. You should use a penetrating oil to loosen the plugs. Soaking the cylinders with transmission fluid is good for loosening stuck rings.

20:33 If you can get to the flywheel with a prybar, I think you get more leverage than this method and it's probably less work than pulling the damper. At least you're out there doing it which is more than I can say 😊

Getting it running consistently will help you assess the engine condition better. I've seen other revivals of flathead 8's in way worse condition run pretty decently. I have to say when I saw the thumbnail, I had to watch. This truck reminds me alot of a 1951 Dodge B5 my dad had years ago. It was the same color yellow flatbed with plywood sides on it like yours. It wasn't a grain hauler, though. Dad was always practical so if he didn't have a use for it, he didn't keep it. Loading hay onto a trailer was much easier so dad sold the Dodge in 1980. I was only 8 years old and so heart broken when it was gone.

My father had a 34 Ford coupe with the flathead when he met my mother. The cops around Flint Michigan all had Buicks with the straight 8. He would drop off my mother when they were dating and a cop car would wait and pull out behind him when he left to drive home. He said that before they could get the Buick in 3rd gear, he was a mile down the road. The flat head is a legend, I sure wouldn't replace it with anything but a flat head. New sub here, I'm a 72 Y O great grandpa who has been married to great grandma over 50 years. Looking forward to following along with you in your journey. Beautiful kids you have!

I love these older ford trucks and had a good many in the day.... yeah seventy three now and pushing it up another notch soon. I know how nasty a job it is but replacing all the brake lines is quite important to these years of rigs. It seems they didn't want to waste any money on metal back then for just about their whole vehicle. Depending on how far a person wants to go, all new rubber mounts and any bushings in the front end will make it a real pleasure to drive or be the passenger in it. I know this much without getting into much troubles.... my girl was this pretty, (if I still had a lady) it would get a lot of attention. I truly think the "patina" look is just overplayed so if well thought out.... clean to a fault, high build primer, and the rust spray stuff that is evading my recall at the moment.... and then tractor paint. I know that it doesn't have the ease of just spray and enjoy but wet sanding till your arms fall off, and then some clear will take it to the car shows local. Best of luck over the coming years as time waits for no one. Remember "YOLO" or you only live once. You can take that common said and make this rig a second chance to take your girl to the dance. And yes, I do know she is your wife
