asking as front ensemble, whats the difference between hitting in the middle and toward the side?
@NoahNugiel7 ай бұрын
Snares and basses have different kinds of playing areas/zones: - Center: the center/loudest areas of the drum. Unless notated otherwise, play here. - Edge/front edge: 12:00 on the drum head. Gives a softer tone. - Gut/gut edge: 2:00 on the drumhead. Only mildly louder than the edge - Halfway: between the center and front edge - (rarely used) 5:00 right-hand playing zone for when playing left-hand rim knocks/cross-sticks

Short answer: Dynamics and Tone/Sound Quality Long Answer: When playing on a snare drum, playing toward the edge produces a quieter, less beefy tone than playing in the middle of the head. The snares that are in tension against the bottom head react less, creating a drier sound. Playing in the middle of the head moves more air, creating more sound, especially from the snares on the bottom head of the drum. This results in the full tone of the drum to project, and the characteristic sound of the snares to come through. This is especially obvious with concert snare drums that don't use high tension kevlar drum heads.
