Think of it as stringing a bow; outside aids hold the bow, inside aids are the string.

Horse loves his hang time! This gymnastic session is like weight training and Pilates for horses. It removes the crutch of velocity. It also hones recruitment patterns

Running martingales are less severe because they don't tie down the horses head and allow for more free movement.

True, these refinded horse are sensitive. Never kick one, just a leg squeeze gets results. Its like a Cadillac to a chevy. Responses elevated. I had a former race horse. He had to be taught almost everything. He was a sweet thing. Got him trained. Took him to my hunt (fox) he behaved like a gentleman. And even at his 1st show.

The riding school I went to had mirrors around the arena, we were to look at ourselves & notice the mistakes called out by the instructor.

Thanks for advocating for softer bits and comfort. If I can't ride bitless, I use flavoured silicone snaffle. Horsemanship isn't about abusing horse into obeying you in this moment, it's beauty is about willing cooperation. I'd love to see more about fitting saddles and new saddle tree construction.

I was taught to ride minus stirrups. Our instructor had us lie down on the bareback horse. We laid on our backs on top the bareback horse. We practiced various things to learn balance. Taught how to roll if falling off. Proper position of body & legs. Same with hands. Proper mounting/dismounting. Etc. Professional training is a plus. This is a good post. You see so many bad riders. You feel sorry for the horse.

Can't believe the poor riding. Who did they train under? My instructor back when would yell at bad posture & riding. Sadly I've seen horrible riders, interfering with horse. Good clip. You only post at the trot. This is terrible. Do the current riders know diagonals. & leads now? How to follow thru.

I had one. He was very nice. I did buy him for a hunter. Had to teach how to be a regular horse. Going up/down hills, water crossings, etc. But he caught on fast. 1st time in the hunt field, he was a perfect gentleman. Kept him till he passed at 27. ❤

I think some of the information in this video is outdated. We have a lot more research now proving how harsh the nutcracker action of single jointed snaffles is. Although from the looks of some of those crazy gadget bits maybe things are worse in the US than what I'm used to seeing here in Australia, where the majority of people ride in single or double jointed snaffles. I have learnt a lot from one of my horses who has a very thick tongue and fleshy lips with not a lot of room for the fat French link lozenge snaffle I got for him, thinking it would be a kinder option. He was getting his tongue over the bit, I realise now because it had nowhere else to go! I would encourage anyone to open your horses mouth with the bit inside and have a look at how it actually works. My pony, who has a very small mouth being a Welsh B, also has a low palate so every time her single jointed snaffle "nutcrackers", it digs into the roof of her mouth! I had no idea until I looked inside her mouth at what the bit was doing. No wonder the poor thing was uncomfortable in the bridle. I'm so glad our governing bodies are now allowing some of the new innovative bits from Myler, Bombers and Fager. I think now we need to start banning the cruel ones from competition because we know better now.

nutcracker is a myth, its only true if you have a bit that is too long, the shape of the horses face keeps the bit from folding in.

I was a student of GORDON WRIGHTS and trained with him at his training center in the Blue Ridge Mountians in North Carolina. He picked me out at a Riding Clinic where I was a student with 300 other Equestrians and chose me to train with him. Gordon was a genius with training horses and teaching ! He taught me his secrets to training horses, equitation, and fox hunting. He was a Gourmet chef Gordon took us to fancy cocktail parties. He was a real horseman who started riding in the U.S. Calvary . He knew all the important people in the HORSE BUSINESS and got me jobs working in the horse business because of his connections. I rode Horses all of my life but, didn't have the money to make it to the OLYMPICS. Those were the best memories of my lifetime. I could write a book about all the Great adventures and strories I had with GORDON WRIGHT.
