  As a born & bred Northumbrian why is it im always on the side of the Vikings? Ive lived on the coast of Northumberland all my life & stand on my cliffs & " see" those longships sailing towards me & i seem to soar... We may be Northumbrians but over the centuries our blood is Viking now & has been longer than it was ever English! We're Kinsmen. Skal 🇬🇧👧

  Might need to check your DNA... just because you live in Northumbria doesnt mean you have viking descent. Hell majority of native English people dont actually have viking descent contrary to popular belief.

  Those shows exist so I don’t have to imagine buddy. The war between Vikings and English was not one sided by any means. That’s just false and you should know that. Yes the English won, but not against The Great Heathen Army. When the Northmen were united the were beating the English. But alas they started infighting over who would rule, the great army was disbanded and this weakened. The English took control shortly after.

  @RyanG0899 idk know if you watched the show, but no one….other than King Aelle was portrayed as fools. Maybe you should give it another try. Granted in the very beginning yes the English didn’t understand who was raiding them cause it had never happened before, but the other prominent English figures were devote and intelligent in their own right. Think maybe you missed the part bro. Btw not being sarcastic, I seriously think that in the show. Many movies and shows have been on about how dumb Northmen were and how they were easily defeated. This is also not true.

  The ridiculous costumes and hairstyles ruined the series for me. For example the perfectly shaved heads with no stubble after weeks and months at sea and in iceland. Priority number one: shave your head smoothly every day and let your beard grow long, as you spend every waking moment in a fight for survival in a brutal wilderness.

  According to Danish vikings and early Anglo writings back in the good old days, the vikings were obsessed with grooming and cleanliness. History shows on all accounts of wars in each century, soldiers would want to look "dapper" before they die. Or fight fashionably "loud" during battle. The Danes invented this look of braided hair with shaved heads on the sides were actually done to prevent lice. Men did braid their hair to appear clean as it was easy to maintain. Just like there are hair trends of today, the trend was just as strong within the viking culture back then. Many shaved their heads because of - lice. But vikings heard this rumor that went around that their foes were scared of fighting bald men because hair symbolized a part of a person's soul. If they had no hair, these bald men gave a notion that they are there to take your soul as well. Weird but true. As far as theatrical shows like vikings, they over saturated the look of viking warriors. But the look itself is somewhat loosely based and the show didn't focus too much on history of hair.

  @northman1963 Just one account vs all the history that says they were well groomed and bathed often were as the English only bathed once a week at most? Maybe the guy that said they were filthy only seen one clan coming off a longship after a journey at sea. Especially since during that time Arabs didn’t travel the seas as long and as far as Vikings/Northmen did.

  The truth is, that Anglo-Saxons were very close relatives of Scandinavian Vikings because two hundred years elier they came to England from Dania and today's North Germany (or north of Poland as Saxons said themself). So, this fight was something like a family quarrel...

What about your surname, it is common for some families to have unproper surnames. I know one Ukrainian who is very "Ukrainian", but his surname is "Mazur", which is the name of people from very Polish Mazowsze (Mazovia). By the way, Mazowsze is my Polish neighborhood, where my family used to live all the time from the XIV century. So, I'm Mazur! And he has got this call as a surname!

  Due to the number of invasions of that area, the genetics of invaded to invader are pretty well mixed until like the 1600s. Celtic is kind of anyone and everyone who was involved in that on either side. It's a mixed culture thing.

  The thing is the Anglo-Saxons we’re cousins to the Norse (Angles came from southern Denmark and the Saxons came from northern Germany near the danish border) but they became “civilised” forgetting what made them feared. The Norse even when they Christianised they didn’t forget their martial prowess.
