I have recently discovered your podcast and I think it’s absolutely wonderful. Keep up the great work. I was completely ignorant of Lawrence Brownlee‘s work. I am immediately went to Apple Music and saved something for later listening. I have listened to one or two other of your videos and I am a Fan. I have subscribed.
So glad you found us! Hope you'll keep listening and even go back and listen to previous episodes!
Some of my favorite concerts in the 1980s were Gerard Schwarz's Music Today series at Merkin Hall in NYC. I remember spectacular performances of music by composers that almost no-one did then or now, or all the time in between. Birtwistle, Grainger, Druckman, Steven Albert, Leonard Rosenman, Panufnik ... Many must've been US premieres. Sometimes I'd see Babbitt or Carter in the audience. This was the early 1980s, so maybe the very beginning of Schwarz's conducting career?
Great interview with Gerry, who it has been my pleasure to play for over a (my) career for over 40 years. Great questions from Dave Krauss, looking forward to more from him.
Thanks for listening! Stay tuned for more interviews!
I've just discovered your podcast and have enjoyed the several episodes I've watched immensely. Hoping you continue to give them to us, and that you continue to enjoy making them. All the best!
Thanks so much for listening and letting us know how much you lie the show. We have more great interviews coming, so be sure you're subscribed!
Just learned about this channel, David. Great first interview to start off!
Hope you'll listen to more!
Saw him conduct many times in Seattle. Brahms, Mahler, Wagner, and Tchaikovsky were staples of the rep. Wish we could have heard more of the American neo-classical composers live, eg, Piston, Creston, Diamond. Lots of really fine recordings with SSO though.
Thanks Craig! Hope you'll listen to more Speaking Soundly episodes!
Wonderful!
So glad to hear you enjoyed! If you haven't already, I'd recommend you check out our interview with Yannick Nézet-Séguin next.
The greatest trumpet solo in an orchestral piece I have ever heard was Schwarz playing the extraordinary solo at the beginning of Carter’s Symphony of Three Orchestras under Boulez.
Oh, that's a great one! Thanks for listening! Hope you'll catch more episodes.
I think Carter wrote that specifically for Schwarz, knowing what he could play.
This is an amazing, life-changing interview. Thank you to both of you.
Joan, Thanks for listening! Hope you'll check out more interviews! xx Speaking Soundly
What a really wonderful interview!!! So much has been said.... so much revelation of what's in your heart and in your mind. Knowing what you went through at such a young age, I would say, "Hats off to you, Ray!!!"
Thanks for listening! Hope you'll listen to more episodes!
Love all the varied literature and diversity with your music. I am so thankful to find your music and marvel at your unique talent and willingness to share world-wide. I am looking forward to your latest recordings and hope to make a live concert in the USA at some point. Thankful for your renewed health. You are a musical blessing to us!!
Excellent violinist, RAY CHEN, he represents the new generations. I like all his interpretations, for me he is the best at the moment
He's quite amazing! Thanks for listening! Hope you'll catch more of our interviews!
As an amateur singer I noticed when I have a spiritual shift my voice becomes warmer and freer. Absolutely worth doing the work of self reflection and ego management. Life just flows easier and that shows up in my voice. Ray is spot on here.❤
Great interview and talk! I have always admired Ray, saw him in music competitions and at concerts, and enjoy his collabs with Twoset and content online. Plus Tonic is genuinely cool!
So glad you enjoyed. Hope you'll listen to more episodes!
Sara is so generous. Thank you did the interview!🎉

As a retired physician, I was very concerned months ago when she got cancer. I said that the most likely possiblity was Hodgkins lymphoma and that she should do well. I am very glad to see that she is well, and that she speaks great English!
Thanks for listening!
Good to see a rising star in violin playing. Such a beautiful musical instrument.
Thanks so much for listening. Hope you'll check out some more episodes on our page. If you're a violin fan, be sure to catch our interviews with Midori, James Ehnes, and David Chan
What a fascinating and inspiring story of Regina’s childhood! ❤️❤️❤️ I really enjoyed this whole podcast! Although I came here from the youtube search of “Renee Fleming”… And I apologize I have to say that the host is a bit ignorant about Renée Fleming’s speaking voice. She has very nice and pleasant speaking voice which I enjoy listening to as much as her singing. Probably, also professionally trained voice. I’ll try to add a few links in the next comment - in case KZread blocks viewers’ links.

What a great interview. I am really happy that you are well again Tine.
Thanks for listening! Hope you'll tune in for more episodes!
It was very early in 2015 that Tine "hit a wall," as she put it, not 2017. I had a ticket to the engagement in Naples, Florida that she had to cancel, for a "medical emergency," per Artis Naples. I was worried, and more so when she did not perform for the next 5 months. Next time I saw her though, at the Cabrillo Festival in California, she looked great and She played James MacMillan's Epicleses masterfully.
Good for you Tine you are a great player !
Hope you'll listen to more episodes of Speaking Soundly
