Welcome! This is Mike, AKA Mower Mike. I am a certified riding mower nut, I love fixing everything mower related and it is time to share my love of fixin mowers with the world!
These are short informative how to videos to teach you how to work on your mower the right way and not waste time or money at a mechanic. I am doing this because of my frustration at all the bad mower “how to” videos are on line! I am also doing this to share all my lame jokes and my amazing hat collection with the world.
My goal is to have my playlist setup as repair guides for each model of mower I work on and general repair guides for categories such as steering, fuel, engines, decks and what not. (Life Goal #2 - Create my own custom Mower Mike Hat!)
Yes, all the mowers on my films are really broke, none of these fixes are fake. (my backyard is full of broke mowers, the wife loves the new look!!!)
Now let’s get to Fixin!

I have a JD LX178 and wanted to see what is needed to remove the PTO clutch and your video helped me and I thank you ! Easy to do !! 💢
Ya I should have seen this sooner I was hitting the steering shaft with a hammer lol
All lawnmowers are junk.
Stop the acting cute and just make the damn video. I will make sure l won't watch another.
Changed the carb on mine Thanks for the video it really helped
We have a 2014 eztrak z425.. it is different than that it has no obvious filter on the outside, or the plastic plug that holds the filter, but it does seem to have some sort of a pan on it can you just drop the pan to change the fluid, thanks
Maybe they should include a seal removal tool so the pump surfaces don't get gouged up from using a screwdriver to remove them.
I enjoy doing the test and looking in to cylinders, troubleshooting is the most rewarding thing 😊😊😊
Right! Is like solving a puzzle.
The adjustable one is for testing coils
The clamp on is good also 😊😊and I use it pretty often
You get what you pay for and lister is best but not a good ideal to run it in engine 😮 bulb will fail
Can I ask you question do you need to tighten the bolt for deck rod on front
Most of the adjustment is in the rear. Just try and get it level with the rear adjusters. You can play with the front one but I never had much luck getting that to change the angle.
Tried this already, ended up splitting the seal, now the rim leaks. So now I have to install a tube.
Must have really wacked that sucker!
@@MowerMike more than once!
can anyone help me with this problem ( i have a craftsman 1994 22 hp kohler lawn and garden tractor GT6000 . every time i engaged pto as soon as blades start spinning it shuts the motor off can you help
I would unhook the deck belt and check all the pullies and see if you have any restrictions. If everything is turning free then I would check out the engine checking the carb, valve lash and compression. Good luck
If you stop rebuilding them, you’re out of a job…….duh!
Damn why didn’t I think of that!!! Thanks for letting me know. Doooh
Ive seen a KZread where the guy drills a hole in the bottom and taps it for a plug. Shows the correct location for the hole also. Seems to be the actual easiest way. Apologies for not having the link..... Appreciate the video.
Yep can do that for sure. I would just worry about getting shavings in the oil.
So painful to watch, so I couldn't. Man but stick to mowers 😢
I know I know, these dang chainsaws are just so fun.
1:51 connecting rod?
I actually changed mine last summer and I didn't have to remove the plate. I had a helper hold the steering rod up and reached my hand up in there to replace the bushing. Working alone I could see your way being a little better.
its seems to work in NEW tubes, to prolong their life a bit, but it does not work at all with tubeless tires or tubes that already have holes/leaks in them. but still not the best , the best thing is tire tube slime of some kind, but in a pinch yeah some of the foam products can be used
Good job well presented. Thank. You
Great job! Informative!
Thanks I appreciate that.
Good job Mike. Very interesting.
Thanks! Was an interesting little experiment
I dont think people understand what hes showing, hes demonstrating what your money can get you at a box store vs a dealership. Its not the experience hes talking about, its the quality of the machine that is sold at said places.
Exactly! Thanks for the backup, lots of grumpy John Deere owners in my comments :)
Mower Mike, what happened to no more Cub Cadets😂
Haha this is the church mower I donated. She will be around for a while, it came with a free Mower Mike service plan. Last one I swear
Excellent video! We have a Scag with the Kaw FR600V. Weak horsepower, oil on my left spark plug, so I'm hoping it's just the head gasket. The Scag Liberty Z has an annoying rear bumper/guard across the back that you can't just unbolt - it's welded to the frame! It'll make access to the engine way harder than your Gravely. Not lookin' forward to that. Anywayz... great vid! Thank You!! 👍
Ya that sucks when those bumpers are in the way. If you are pulling the engine to do head gaskets you should consider doing the rings and rest of the gaskets at the same time. The rings are supposed to be replaced at 600 hours. I have videos on all of it. Good luck!
@@MowerMike Found it: kzread.info/dash/bejne/nY2C1aaPesW0XcY.html
How do you replace a "hydraulic dampener" no a Hustler Dash? They told me that is wrong what's with mine and I don't even know where to find it. Is it a DIY repair? (my left control arm is not hitting the safety switch)
If you look at the bottom of the forward/backward control arm there is a rod connected to it that connects that arm to the top of the transmission. It should have a clip in each end that pops off, is super easy to replace.
I've seen big box in dealerships
I have a 2021 Craftsman tight turn series tractor all metal including hood..3 year unlimited hours warranty residential and commercial on the Kohler 22 horsepower 725cc V twin 5 year warranty on full frame..you can keep your John Deere
Did you get a free Craftsman hat with that rig??
@@MowerMike you can keep your John Deere..
so have I seen the same models in both box stores and dealerships
how good are you at speed bag? I was just thinkin the other day I want one in my garage and there one is lol
Haha love this comment. I highly suggest getting one. It is a great mind and upper body workout. It takes a couple of weeks of practice but once you get the rhythm down you will feel like Rocky. I can rip it pretty fast if my mind is clear.
If the final torque value is 20 ft-lbs torque in sequence to 10 ft-lbs then re torque to you final torque value of 20 in sequence again to guarantee you dont fck it up not even going to address the fact that the entire motor is rocking while you do it. But good on you because you will probably get away with it on a small motor.
I tried this job. Went well until I couldn't get the jet unthreaded out of the body. It seems the threads are in bad shape and I have stripped the top of the jet trying. Any suggestions???
I would try and clean it with the jet still in there. Get a small wire or a carb cleaning kit and jam it up in there and then spray carb cleaner through the jet. You can do it without removing the jet. I have been there it sucks when that little brass slot strips but I bet you can make it work. Worse case order a new carb on Amazon for $40.
@@MowerMike You got me pretty spooked about those Amazon Carbs. You said that the gaskets on them leak a lot. I really dont see many gaskets on the thing. What typically goes wrong with those cheap Carbs?
@@grueneriverguesthouse1886 They can be jetted wrong or leak. I would try and fix the stock carb first and if that doesn’t work try an Amazon carb.
Great help with the sequencing and idler pulley trick!
I gotcha John!
Thanks for the straightforward video. The water company did work a while back, turning off everyone on the block's water multiple times. They didn't turn it back on properly-they should know this right? Nope, charged me $30 to "readjust" it & it still takes the toilet tank 10 minutes to refill-it took 1 minute before they "fixed" it. Now I can do it myself. Thanks
Wow have never heard of a water company charging to turn the damn valve. Well done figuring it and fixing it without calling those screwballs!
I have that same mower and I don’t have that fuel tank issue with the engine cover so they must have changed that.
I love the safety switch for the blades... I would never disconnect that one
I totally agree!
What type oil on hydo unit cub cadet enforcer 54
The Amazon 20w50 hydrostatic gear oil is the best you can buy. I have tested it and it runs smoother and faster than anything on the market. Check out the link below. I only use Amsoil on all my equipment and cars. Sign up to be a preferred customer is the way to go. www.amsoil.com/search/#q=20w-50%20synthetic%20hydrostatic%20transmission%20fluid&t=totalProductsTab&sort=relevancy&numberOfResults=20?zo=1360728
Cub cadet worked noises. Service both sides both filters and pump upgrades won't move forward or reverse tried bleeding any help
I suggest keep on trying to bleed the system with the rear jacked up. You can unhook the hoses leading to the units and use a funnel directly into the transmission. I have had to do that because air can get trapped in the hose that goes to the overflow tank. If that doesn’t work You also may have installed the pump gear upside down or the wrong one. I know it is frustrating but just go slow and keep working it. I bet you will get it going.
I have owned three Cub Cadets and one John Deere. My current tractor is a Deere X758. I transitioned to a Deere X758 in order to get a diesel engine. All three of my Cub Cadets were solid and reliable machines. I owned them for years. The biggest plus I give Cub Cadet over Deere is dealer support. The local John Deere dealership transitioned from a local mom and pop business to a huge operation with many stores. They forgot about the little guy like me. I never had that issue with the Cub Cadet dealership. Sorry, I am not an employee of Cub Cadet. I am employed as a Deputy Sheriff.
Dang a diesel X758 is a sweet rig. Thanks for the comment and keeping the streets safe.
All you gotta do is hotwire your black coil wire running to your ignition coil the same way to your key switch, snipp behind the wiring harness just in front of your starter and hot wire right back to the key switch where your ignition coil, usually a black wire connects the key , this will shut down your mower when you turn the switch off. This along with the hot wire you did previously to your trigger switch on the solenoid, You will then be able to start and install your mower with the key switch on command. Keep in mind every wiring diagram is different for certain mowers some dual ignition coils that run up each side of the more like the V twins, may have to do a little different wiring, but for the most part, I saw lots of questions on this post regarding the engine not shutting off and this will solve it. Love the video keep on mowing brother.
I always have to use an impact gun to get my blades off
Good call
What if the set screw is stuck? I am afraid I will strip the head of the set screw.
Can’t help ya there. Just take your time. Sometimes I will use an electric drill on a stuck screw to see if it breaks it loose.
@@MowerMike Someone before me used loctite Red on them. Heat from Mapp gas worked wonders.
My transmission fan collapsed when the belt rode on it; is it necessary to have that fan?
I assume they put it there for a reason. I have a video on how to replace it, is super easy. Look at my hydrostatic transmission playlist
@@MowerMike my bolt that hold that bearing is stuck; I can’t unscrew it
Can I soak the piston in Warm soapy water or Vinegar and baking soda mix?
Sure why not.
Way too much work on that engine. Why? I thoughtvthese are good engines.
You should check out one of those new fangled electric mowers.
It's routine maintenance...any small engine will need the valve lash adjusted every couple hundred hours. The only issue these Kawasaki FS/FX/FR engines are known for, from what I've heard over the years, is valve train problems due to lack of routine valve lash adjustments (letting the valve springs weaken, valves/valve guides/valve seats work themselves loose).
Is carb made by Kawasaki or other company? Great video, good camera work!
No it is a different company. Is a good carb though. Thanks!
I have a troy bilt 0turn lawn mower stop pull when about a hour after mowing can it be repaired
Sure anything can be fixed.
I have a cub cadet gt2100. I followed your instructions step by step and now I can't get my mower to move. I watched other videos about bleeding the air out, but that still didn't work. Any other suggestions?
I suggest jacking up the rear of the mower and running it forward and backwards and keep topping it off with fluid. Taking the weight off the wheels helps bleed it. Good luck!
For those cheapskates like me, there is free PDF versions of the full service manual online.
Great job Mike. Glad to see somebody else that doesn’t have to every step by “ the book” 🍺
Haha thanks brother
The manual you are using where can I get one?
I think I got mine on eBay. Or you can find a PDF version online
