For people studying medicine, please look into the recommended treatment (500mg IV Thiamine over 30 minutes three times a day started immediately) vs what your hospital’s standard of care is (I.e. Banana bag) to save yourself from a lawsuit. Just because the hospitals in your community treat with a banana bag, doesn’t mean an attorney can’t sue based on what the research and medical journals recommend and there are pro bono attorneys who will take these cases without any fees unless there is monetary recovery. Also, look into the percentage of people who present with the classic triad (18-38%) vs people who present with just one or two, or atypical symptoms. Last thing, don’t think that just because they have had ongoing symptoms for 6+ months, it’s not Wernickes. My dad presented with psychosis and malnutrition with a reported history of chronic alcoholism and a negative urine alcohol screening (likely forgot to drink). According to friends, he had mild confusion for the last 8 months. I spoke to him 4 hours before the ER admission and he was fine and within a week, he was considered disabled. The nurse said she sees this happen all the time… They used a banana bag. I have already been in touch with an attorney who will review his records upon discharge for negligence due to delayed and inadequate treatment. So do your research, use your judgment, and cover your ass. You have the power to make a difference.

My mother had this due to cronic alcoholic. She had this and also was wheelchair bond for the rest of her life. She eneded up in hospital at age of 45 In neurology ward for 12 months, she was bad. Her nerves were damaged her hands feet she had to learn to use them again. But never regained walking. So she was wheelchair bond. Then moved to a care home where they specialised in this was newly open she was the 1st to come to this new home. She wasn't meant to live past 2 years, but she lived for 14 years. Died 3 years ago age 59. She had terrible memory and like she was drunk all the time not like the way she used to be but see her eyes and her speech. This isn't talked about enough. Not many ppl belive this can happen! My mum was what they call cronic alcoholic she was ill took my years to except that it is an illness. Life growing up was hell. 45 is young for ur life to just change the way it did. In her death ever though she never touched a drop for years she had a very painful death due to damage of her liver! In her final days I'd never wish it on my worst enemy. Still on her death certificate was said liver damage due to alcoholism. She died of a leaking hernia nothing they could do. Couldn't operate due to other complications. She had 14 years after the damage she done to herself and having this syndrome and many other things. She got on with it. Ppl need to be more aware about this. It's serious it's shocking what can do to u as a person. My mum was a beautiful woman who had her own hairdressing business but she couldn't stop drinking many other things happened in her life that she couldn't fight many times she was sectioned. Put in places for alcoholics. She escaped before found her under a tree drunk. The drink was her life unfortunately. Demons took over. Sad and unfortunate life she had. I've had to forgive and let go of anger etc. I didn't know her any other way but drunk and abusive. Ppl need to be aware of this scary to watch belive me!

My mum had it. Unfortunately she didn't receive thiamine treatment even though I insisted on it. I was called stupid by my father for googling the treatment. She never recovered and continued drinking while my father was living his double life with a local young gold digger. They both died of lung cancer. I hope you got the treatment you deserve.

He shattered this poser in half a minute and i love how House reaches to his pain killers, if one insults his intelligence. It shows how actually his pain is mentally, not physical. He just can´t stand the stupidity of others. It makes him sick.

This is not an accurate depiction of Korsakoff’s syndrome. I have it. Yes, my short term memory can be crap. And some times I’m told I confabulate, but not to the extreme depicted here. Thiamine only reverses the syndrome so far and then you are what you are. Treatment with thiamine is only done at the initial, on set of the syndrome not when ever symptoms arise.

House can be nice to people, it's just that people are emotional and that emotionality makes them flighty and illogical, which is extremely frustrating for him as it makes them act without care for themselves or others. Just because he has no respect for people, and "doesn't like people" doesn't mean he doesn't care about them. Their wellbeing is his job description, he'd be scratching his arse watching telly in a trailer if he didn't care about people

The best scene ever. "I got one thing - same as you." --- "You don't risk jail and your career to save somebody who doesn't want to be saved - unless you've got Something - Anything - One Thing." "The reason normal people got wives and kids - hobbies - whatever. That's because they ain't got that One Thing - that hits em that hard and that true." "I got music - you got This. The thing you think about all the time - the thing that keeps you South of Normal." "Yeah - makes us Great - makes us the Best. All we miss out on is everything else." --- "When it's over - it's over." I was lucky enough to see this Episode (9) back in 2005. "that One Thing" hit me then. and now in Sept, 2021 something I heard reminded me of this "House episode". I took some time to watch the whole episode again. Then rerun this scene a few times. Thanks for posting the video !
