    I bet the reason they want it unlocked to torq down is so you are not putting pressure on that locking pin when you torq it down so as not to damage the pin. then once its torqed down you lock back into place so it does not rattle on first start up.

    Has to be unlocked to ensure that torque applied to the camshaft bolt does not damage the lock pin.

    I believe they tell you do do that is because it wont shear the pin inside there thus creating a check engine light code. Good information. I have never got it to unlock. You should sell that tool. I bet you people would by it

    The reason to unlock it is to prevent the pin from breaking during bolt installation.

    I have no idea. I put mine on and then unlocked it and it won’t line up the same as when i took it off. It seems my stock one was unlocked when it came off but not sure why you you need to lock it. I’m stuck trying to figure it out. I out it on unlocked then unlocked it. But i don’t get why and why am i having a problem. I must have something wrong like it send the valve might be hitting each other because i can’t spin my cam closer to engine wall easy and when I’m spinning then they are like popping forward half way thru a cycle. I don’t remember it doing that before i put these new vvt sprockets.

    Good video. Mine was dirty inside with lots of burnt chunks of oil because it came from a burnt out engine. i had to opened, cleaned all parts really good, assemble it back together unlock and attach it to the shaft, torque to specs for my Toyota Corolla 2004 then turn it to lock, i almost make the mistake of assembling the head with the cam shaft cleaned by the machine shop, on the outside it was clean, inside air was no passing all over the cam shaft which made me suspicious that it was dirty inside; mine has 5 point star tamper security screws and it gave me hell to unbolt it, I destroyed the first screw but got it opened after some battle. I was glad i did once i saw the inside as almost all those little passages were pretty clogged up with gum up oil.

    After doing some research I answered my own question.Why do you have to unlock vvt-i to install then lock after installed If you dont do it this way , you run the chance of wedging the locking pin tight....thus making the VVT-i inoperable. That's why you do it.

    Hey not sure if you will know. Fitted a full chain kit on a 1.8 2006 Toyota celica. When I had new intake sprocket in my hand I somehow twisted it and heard a click. Fitted all back together not giving much of a worry and now fault code p1349 is appearing. Any ideas or do you reckon I may have locked pulley and will need to strip down again?

  • @hiblendmedia
    @hiblendmedia8 жыл бұрын

    Just dissected a cam gear for a 2zzge. The manual is crap. I could be entirely wrong about this, but I found that it's easier to remove the Toyota stealership 5-pointed tamper proof bolts from the cam gear cover with some channel locking vise grips and replace those bolts with ones of the same grade but not 5-pointed. Then disassemble the cam gear, clean out whatever crap is in there, if any, and manually unlock the pin by just pushing it outwards and turning the cam gear so it's not locked in the groove. Note: If you're transferring the camgear to another camshaft, i highly recommend cleaning the insides out, because once you undo the bolt that connects gear to cam, the original loctite material in there before will circulate inside the gear housing. Now replace the cam gear cover with the new bolts and some high temp red loctite threadlocker. making sure everything is where it was even the lock pin spring. The manual doesn't state torque specs for the cam gear cover bolts, but 12-14 ft-lb should be ok. The bolts weren't extremely tight. Now torque the cam gear to the camshaft to spec with high temp red loctite. Then spin the cam gear so the pins locks in it's groove. At this point the cam gear will not spin once locked. Note: Before putting everything back it may be a good idea to lube all metal to metal innards of the cam gear to prevent any unknowns during initial startup. Maybe use assembly lube. Also, the thread pitch for new bolts are Flange type M6 1.0 mm pitch and is 35mm in length. The original flange bolt length is like 33mm, but 35mm is easier to find and will not interfere with the camshaft. Will post a video for those who need visuals.

    Quick question. So is this the proper way to reinstall the cam gear onto the cam? 1. Remove the cam from cam gear. 2. Unlock the cam gear from full advance. Either remove those 5 point bolts or blow air into the gear. 3. Install the new cam onto the old cam gear and torque down to 40ftlb. 4. Once they are all together, rotate the cam gear back to full advance which is clockwise. Does that sound right? Is the point of unlocking the cam gear so that when you torque the cam back to the cam gear, it doesn't bind the internal pin?

  • @hiblendmedia
    @hiblendmedia7 жыл бұрын

    Yes, if you're removing the gear itself, you'll want the pin unlocked or not in the hole. Then once you've torqued it down then turn the cam gear and the pin will drop into the hole and be locked. Be very wary of which side the little metal pieces go for the plastic keys. I made the mistake of positioning it where it would scrape the internals of the gear the first time. Good thing I double checked xD

    Thank you very much. We finished the 2001 VVTI thanks to you. It runs perfectley. When I picked up the new head at Autozone I asked them about the unlock procedure (asked them, then did not volunteer any information). The manager said he didn't know but, had a guy that used to work at Toyota so he had him come out. He said yes, absolutely you must unlock the VV gear. Thank again.

    gsr2envy i have been hunting high and low trying to figure out why it has to be unlocked just to torque the cam bolt. I think you have answered it the best i have seen yet! Locking pin out of the “lock up” position keeps the pin “which is actually a finely machined shuttle valve pin assembly” for getting bound up and scored. I had a rod bearing come apart shortly after a rebuild so i am taking everything apart cleaning it all really well. So far i pulled apart one exhaust cam phaser and found a tiny triangular piece of metal in it. Must have been in there since manufacturing since it would not fit through any passages. Any leads on the five point pentalobe tool toyota used for these bolts? Going to just get them all out and use grade 5 bolts to reassemble them with some loctite. Thanks for any ideas you might have. Figure putting this out there might save someone hours of searching i have had to do to get to this point
