Bonjour !

Bernard Huc

Bernard, is this 3D digital file the base for the figures being sold by ANCRE at 1/48, 1/36 and 1/24 scales?

no, the ANCRE model has a more twisted body. Mine is more in line with reality. You can see it here: www.turbosquid.com/3d-models/3d-model-carpenter-1700-1800-2095966

That fact it just disappeared without a trace makes this all the more better, because for all we know the turret could’ve just popped open and the guns were like a typical deck gun of a U-Boat 😂

So the actual angel of the cannon is capable of firing is limited by how much the fire director can turn, what a design flaw but damn it looks cool

I didn’t know the gun could rotate. I thought it was a casemate like a bunker. If the angle is too far I’d expect the recoil to roll the sub. A curious concept but advances in anti submarine tactics should have outpaced its construction so I’m puzzled why land power France would waste resources actually building it. It’d make more sense if the US, Britain or Germany had tinkered with this concept. The US and Britain ended up using large subs to smuggle supplies to besieged islands like Malta and the Philippines. As it turns out Surcoef was plagued with mechanical issues and/or the free French crew were considered so unreliable so it had a unhappy career being sent away from several assignments until it went missing.

... Pointless idea IMO, submarine is there to not be seem, to act coverlty and avoid detection. The only reason early subs had a gun turret was because it was a better alternative to an expensive torpedo to take down a merchant ship that already surrendered. Mechant vessels werent armored so even a crappy gun turret could penetrate it. That plus a submarine itself is not armored, water is it's armor, just go 20 feet under and you're safe, it has no need to engage a superior armed vessel with a cannon if it can just torp it from beneath. Early subs are economy weapons, they're not even built or meant to engage enemy military but mercantile vessels, it's cargo you're after not munitions.

It's easy to write this with today's knowledge. But you don't know what works out if you don't try it. The eventual role of early submarines was not clear during WW1. They were even almost ignored in the beginning, thought of as a simple toy that wouldn't accomplish much. This thinking was changed when the German submarine SM U-9 sunk three British Cruisers on 22 September 1914 in less than an hour, which was more or less a traditional naval engagement. As early torpedoes were expensive and unreliable (about your "just torp it from beneath"...), several navies tried to design submarine cruisers like the one depicted here, including the Royal Navy and the German Imperial Navy. Again, it wasn't clear that submarines of the time would be unsuited for fleet support. Submarines really were well protected by diving during WW1 (although they'd need to get much deeper than just 20 feet!), but that meant they were also unable to attack, stuck below the surface with barely any battery capacity. So keeping on the surface was desirable. And finally, the main anti-submarine method of the time was the deployment of Q-ships, seemingly harmless merchants with secret armament, hoping to lure submarines towards the surface. Arming submarines with heavier guns could have made that less effective.
