    what's the name of the person who's done jasper? Also interested in the film Vince Glielmi mentioned. Another astonishing work of yours Bryan. I really dig the medium format look in combination with Glielmis work. Very very good storytelling. Honestly if this was like 1 hour I would totally pay for this! I mean I would even pay for this film if I had the money right now. Thank you Bryan!

    I'm in love with the music around 8 minutes in. Can anyone tell me what it is? - that aside, I'm so inspired by this work. In this digital age, a lot of photography is very similar like people are following the same formula, using the same filters. It's not easy to stand out on the stage of social media. These images speak to me from a place that's away from all that. They're bright and dark, exciting and very clever.

    I’ll have to look up the song name and let you know. It’s from Artlist so it’s not a well known artist. I’m always looking for people that make different work. It’s true that you see the same things on KZread because there’s definitely a formula like you said. Why switch it up when you see what works for others? Glad you enjoyed it. And thanks for watching!

    Thanks for posting this. Didn't know about Vincent Glielmi and his work, which is pretty amazing. His take on shooting locally really resonates with me. Especially given all the emphasis there is on street photography in bigger cities. Not totally hating on all the redundant content people share in whatever city, where someone can accidentally capture a "cool" image, but, there's something to be said about actually having to see what's around us, regardless of how mundane or taken for granted it might be, and produce something beautiful, something truly stunning, something, that usually falls into the landscape of our own benign existence.

  • @BryanBirks
    @BryanBirks4 сағат бұрын

    I agree. Street photography isn’t necessarily my cup of tea but I respect people for doing it. It actually fills me with more anxiety doing that compared to knocking on a stranger’s door. Not sure why. I wanted to showcase Vince because he’s a rad person but like you said, it is something different. Everyone does have something new to say but not everyone has something new to show.

    Talking about "elevating" a person really struck a nerve with me. I completely agree and it seems that modern photography sometimes can be centered on dramatic portraits of people on the street in ways that are a bit dramatic and strange and don't really paint these people in the best light, but do well on social media because they are shocking or strange. It is refreshing to hear discussion on how we can elevate our subjects in our work as Photographers.

    It's so weird right? We unfortunately live in a world where everything needs to be explained to us, we want others to take our hands and walk us through life. We fear the unknown, the uncertainty, the romance. I think that we sometimes need to stop seeing things with our logical and analytical eyes, stop trying always to keep things in control just because it feels safe. For some, this must be a very scary thing when we let our hearts do the things for us. It is hard to let it go so we feel the need to put words on every single thing that we see, touch or taste.... Photography is the art of letting things go and letting the heart wander without fear through the eyes of the photographer. We don't always need to explain ourselves, the pictures tell a lot already and I feel like the moment we try to put some words on them it just defeats the purpose of it.

    Bryan, I believe you should listen to your anxiety, and not fight it. I believe that is your nature, trying to tell you that, that is not the way of taking photographs, that belongs to you, and you should try to listen yourself better, and find your way. We have to fight our anxiety, when duty compells us, when a situation requires us so. But when pursuing a creative, fun and spontaneous activity, feeling anxious, for a long time, is an alarm we should listen to. I bet that if you'd find a way to portrait people, without ever being anxious about it, your work will be more meaningful. I've been following you for quite some time, and I always felt this way, there would be more to add to this thought, but I'll end it here. I love your work and I wish you all the best.

    I really don't care about gear talk, I often watch photography channels to learn a technique, but more importantly to get some inspiration. AI is a tool best used to help people to do the necessary tasks, but it doesn't have the human connection that the best art conveys.

  • @robgutkowski7141

    Great video, the introduction really drew me in, and the video gave me a lot of food for thought. Making photos of the place one is in, the place one knows well, is what will allow one to create a unique portfolio and style. We don't need another image of El Capitan or the Brooklyn Bridge, only you can capture the places no one else goes. I look forward to seeing more images. You took the time to talk to Doug, and that resulted in some great images, I think they should be in the book, they are some of the strongest images I've seen so far related to the Midwest and car culture, and they have an interesting story. Good on you for going out and getting those images despite having some reluctance. The portraits of Travis, both on the tailgate, and the closer version are great images as well, but sometimes the subject doesn't want to tell a story to accompany the words, but you have a story of your own about the images, and that's enough. I really like Alex Soth's idea, and I think you should consider images at the front of any book you produce, with more details in text at the back. I know I like to read about many of the images I see, but not necessarily alongside the images. If you like the GFX, and the price is reasonable. You are fortunate to get paid to be a photographer on assignment, if the GFX allows you to do that sort of work more efficiently, but still allows you to have you own style, use the GFX for assignments and that buys a bit more time on assignment and pays for the film when you want to use the large format camera for work or your own private pursuits.
