    Is it counter intuitive to walk my dog on a flat collar in more of a “throw away” mode, while I’m training heel separately? Should this be the only “walk” we do until we’ve progressed to actually walking down the road?

  • @balanceddoguk

    @@beckysweeney6956 no it’s a great idea. Your flat collar walk will end up being a seperate activity to your training walks on your training collar/lead. Mix it up just make sure your not allowing pulling on your training collar/lead

    I have been doing this with my dog for about a year and she gets everything while I’m training her but doesn’t seem to remember anything by the next day It’s crazy and I’m about to just give up. I’ve also spent hundreds of dollars on her training. By the way, she’s a 80 lb lab.

    @@PennysPorch the trick is to make this something you then do all the time and it not just be at specific times in training. It’s like learning to drive a car where you start with the basics and then are applying them to actual driving on proper roads, but quieter ones while you learn. Until your on the big busy roads! You want to be doing the same with your dog where you are not just doing this in a training environment but everywhere you go until you can go anywhere

    Just discovered your channel and it's truly awesome. It also gave me some hope in a moment where training my dog has become quite disheartening. He's a beautiful and sweet 4yo English Setter who I adopted 9 month ago after he was abandoned by a hunter (here in Italy this happens a lot with these breeds - hunters often abandon hounds who are not "good enough"). Knowing how reactive these dogs are, I started working on my recall with him from day one and I have reached the point where I can say his recall his very good in moments of medium/low stimulation. However, he's got such a strong prey drive and such high reactivity that in certain circumstances it feels like he's not even aware I'm there with him. If he smells water nearby there's no way stopping him from running towards it, or if he smells an animal in a nearby bush, there's no way recalling him for the next 2/3 mins. This is very sad to me because I love going on long walks in nature with him and see him explore the world around him, but I also want to make sure he's safe and that I can control him should the situation require that. I'll definitely try the long lead technique, especially when it comes to his drive to run towards water. Keep up the good work Ben, really appreciate your energy and the knowledge you bring to the table!

    Ben, any chance of a video on how to deal with walks when your Dog stops and won’t move ? My Rescue lab cross has never been a lead puller, but is going through a phase of stopping. I think it’s due to him now feeling more relaxed and wanting to explore more but I’m only guessing at that. Also, if you don’t mind, what makes your treat pouch ? Cheers

  • @balanceddoguk
    @balanceddoguk12 күн бұрын

    @@SiRhodesDriverTraining hey! So if I ever get a dog that does that I’ll definitely remember to film it! But just so you know what I would do for next time it happens. So I would have made sure to teach the dog to follow lead pressure. Meaning that I have done hundreds of reps of putting pressure on in the opposite direction to where they are going and immediately rewarding them for following pressure in my direction. Then when they decide to dig in I’m pulling pressure forward, keep the lead parallel to the ground so it is pressuring forward and not upward, encourage them to come verbally and reward heavily when they do. Then I’m trying to keep it moving and if they dig in you should be able to pop them out oof it really fast next time. Here’s a link to the treat pouch: amzn.to/3Y5xVvO

    Hi Ben. To find a good trainer, are there any official qualifications to look out for ? I love your methods of teaching BTW, you make it so understandable and that’s what is needed as the owners need to understand as much as the dogs do.

  • @balanceddoguk
    @balanceddoguk25 күн бұрын

    @@SiRhodesDriverTraining so here in the uk there is no official course or qualification you must have to be a dog trainer. And there are hundreds of different courses and acronyms for people do put on their name. Unfortunately a lot of the time this is not a good representation of whether or not a dog trainer is good or not. Much like having a driving licence doesn’t make you a good driver 😅. Definitely look for trainers that share their work so you can see them handling dogs and talking to clients so you can know if you’re choosing the right person.

    Thank you! When I next have a dog in that does this type of behaviour I will make a video about it. But for now I would first focus on the heel and the engagement making sure it is as close to 10/10 I could get it when there was no distraction. Once you have this as a baseline you can then use ur lead to interrupt the behaviour as soon as she goes to fixate on the trigger. You will likely need to be firm on the lead to break focus and regain attention. You may want to use a different collar and lead setup and I would recommend trying to find a trainer to help you in person with this one. It requires a good understanding of the dogs specific behaviour, good timing and skill on the lead to overcome this type of thing so definitely see if you can get some help from a trainer.

    Use the long line to interrupt that behaviour until you see it decrease or disappear entirely. Not having the line on leaves too much up too chance as you may think your clear of dogs until one comes out of nowhere and your dogs off, rehearsing that unwanted behaviour 🤦‍♂️
