The relationship between Clint Eastwood and Eli Wallach's characters reminds me of that between Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis. Martin was the straight man while Lewis provided the comedic energy. In a similar manner, Eastwood here is the straight man for Eli Wallach's manic and scheming villain. A wise choice for the director, since Wallach had much more acting ability than Eastwood. I like the actor, but what he always did best was stare and squint. Eli Wallach was the life of this movie. You watched Tuco whenever he was onscreen because, even as a "secondary" character, he stole the show. R. I. P., Mr. Wallach. And bravo.
