It seems to me that this concert is about the kids and Marshall Gilkes' masterclass to them, not a critique of Mr. Gilkes' perfomance. Let's remember what the othet contributor said. It's about the kids. Make sense?

Marshall Gilks has such a gorgeous tone to his horn he really never needs to play those extremely high notes. I enjoy his commands going through the chord changes. The band sounded superb btw and I would love to hear some of those young trombone players take a shot at solos as well as those trumpet players. 👍

Beautiful playing by all in this excellent jazz orchestra! Was this tune also arranged by Marshall?

I shall continue where I left off. He tries to do too much at one time. He has a phenomenal tone on the horn. Unbelievably brilliant musician.

This solo is high on chops - low on musicality. He could learn a lot about artistry from Bob McChesney.

I don’t know the situation here, but this is disrespectful to the kids. It’s always about kids…period. If he wants the spotlight he should get his own gigs.

Thank you for watching. I'm band leader of this video"Fukuda-Gumi". I planed this live, choiced all pieces, and decided all solo spaces. All responcibility for this concert is mine. First of all, Marshall is great person. He is so polite and kind. As you know, he is one of the greatest trombone player. That time, he came to Japan as a member of Japanese Big Band. it is hard to believe, He didn't have any single solo. Japanese Jazz Fans, Trombone players wanted to see his Solos. So, as you said, it might be too match solos, but audiences need his solos like this. If you have time, please watch another video. The Canadian: kzread.info/dash/bejne/eaCdqsh8qJeXoNY.html This piece wrighten by band member, trombonist Ryo Otomo. It was great experience for us. It was good collaboration with him. Finaly, did you said band member as kids? Almost all member were over 25 year then.

I'm pretty sure the only reason he writes opening excerpts in mostly Bb is the fact that pedals on a peashooter that is standard for tenor trombones only reach from Bb to E, and even then the F# and lower are just not well speaking notes. His range is definitely not defined by key, he has a lot of cadenza recordings in other keys, this is just his most popular one
