Contrast between Francis, heretics, who rule The Church as communists, cross boundaries, insult traditional Catholics/Monastics, verbally assault other cultures/countries, kiss feet of Islamic rapists/torturers/murderers, shake bloody hands of demons, turned Christ into a corporation; AND these fine, humble, peaceful, Holy men, dedicated to love of God, prayer, humanity, Christ Crucified, is MASSIVELY different. Appears two entirely different religions! The Vatican is so far removed from God, Catholics, it frightens me. God willing The Church hierarchy is ended. Parishioners choose their Pope, Priest, not The Vatican. Francis, his entourage, are demons. Evil masks itself well sticks together. God is in The Eucharist, our hearts, not in The Vatican.

I myself have to be sincere that i’m not sure about the fruits of being a monk [any monk, not just Carthusians], especially since i’m not a Catholic [neither Orthodox], but I walked some steps in my personal path of faith, and I used to have this same question you posted. I have been broken to pieces again and again along this time and it keeps rolling…. been broken like never before, just to reveal more of the light I could never imagine even in my wildest dreams. Such a beautiful light… Nothing of this world comes even remotely close to it, yet the physical world itself becomes a vessel in its hands and partakes in this great light. It shines in and from everything. You are naked infront of it, everything is naked before you, and all there is is love. You don’t “just” love, you become love. When you begin to depart, back to the misery of this world including yourself as part of it, you have a hope rooted in you which is not yours. It not your dreams or desires. It is not about you. It’s eternal and everlasting, and it has been implanted in you and nothing, except for the source itself which implanted it in you, can take it away. Not even your most vicious and diabolic moments. Can you imagine how dull and shallow everything else is compared to this? How ugly everything is compared to this beauty, how dark and destructive everything is compared to this divine light? We should indeed imitate Jesus Christ, amen, but we are not Him. All we can do is listen and follow according to His calling, from our place as fallen miserable creatures, to each to his own under Him, as part of the whole body of Christ, it is not us who control the existence and it is not about our name to be in every correct spot, we are far from perfect and can’t be, but it is upon us to follow His personal calling for us.

I grew up not far from here and in High School our Golf Team played a match or two at Equinox. This is a beautiful area in the Piemont area of Vermont. I think we all know that Pope Francis is not too keen on contemplative orders which suggests he is unaware of their crucial value to the Faith.

In your life, you will never do as much as a Carthusian Choirmonk or any of the Brothers. I have in Entertainment and was/am sort of until I return to Carthusian Monastery in Italy and spent long hours doing arduous work. I've spent countless time writing movies and a few books and will never work harder than a Choirmonk. They work hard, occasionally, to keep the faith that brought them to the Carthusians. You will never accomplish 1/2 of what they do. The proof is simple. Wouldn't someone without a very deep faith be bored to death doing nothing?

Please thank the prior for allowing this filming. It is so soothing to those of us who are in the hustle of the world. Sometimes I awake between midnight and 3 am and think, "They're praying." I feel safe, covered with their blanket of prayer.

The idol or yargal gave me a singular sense of what it might be like to be a precolonial man. I think that the people must have been very fierce but calm and collected because they had no idea about other cultures or dieties. I was shocked to think that Yargal would be a shadowy force that descended on the man or woman. An excellent way to experience the ancient!

I have a brother who, like me, despite 12 years of Catholic school was an Agnostic and borderline Atheist. On a visit to Italy, he was asked by a waitress if he could stop at a Monastery and review some papers from the States about land inheritance. A great Washington DC Attorney and top litigator didn’t come back to the U.S for over 13 years and then because the Department of State asked the Vatican to order the Carthusian order’s Prior General to insist that he be given 2 weeks to to return to the States for debriefing by Departments of State, Justice and CIA. He had been Private Counsel to them. He finished quickly and received permission to visit his family in Pacific Palisades California. He was hit by a car and hurt very bad, very, very bad and has been unable to return to his Community in Italy but his cell is still waiting and he is still a Carthusian Choirmonk/Priest. This Monastery in Vermont seems very luxurious compared to his. They even have a new heating system. Not like his and another I’ve visited. His cell is kept warm by a wood burning stove. I’m surprised at the Monastery in Vermont. No wonder they have a large number of Choirmonks. His tops out at 7 or 8 including my brother.

I don't think you got the right impression from the video. There's no internal heating in the Vermont monastery, you can see the wood burning stove in the cell. Carthusians are very strict about making sure that each monastery adheres to the same rules as the others, every two years they send monks to other monasteries to make sure no one is getting lax.

They have a couple ways of generating income. The main stream of income at this particular location is Mt Equinox, also known as Skyline Drive. They charge $25 per car and $5 per passenger to drive up the Mt and the view is incredible. They have a gift shop at the bottom and that's where you pay to enter/drive Skyline Drive and in the gift shop they has thinks (religious items) that the monks made. At the top they have a building and it explains the history of the Mt and how this all came about, as well as a pray room. It was interesting to say the least. When driving up they have these houses and from what I read and was told that these homes are where family comes once a year to spend time with monk. The monks are only allowed to talk to each other on Mondays. This is one of the only charter houses in North America. The biggest overall income of the Carthusian Monks as a whole is Chartreuse Liqueur (they have a variety) which is a herbal type of liqueur. I only know all this because I was up in Vermont in that area and did the Skyline Drive.

If it were all beauty on the outside, the monks would be tempted to seek God on the outside. Yet the Kingdom of God is within our hearts and souls. Having simplicity and asceticism forces us to look within rather than outwards, and so this is why this can be very helpful to these holy men God bless

I’m guessing it was on one of their weekly walks. Once a week the Carthusians go on a hike and they walk in threes or so it seems from what I have read. If they met neighbours on the trail it would be natural to talk especially as the monks were talking to each other at that time. I could be wrong.

I don't think you got the right impression from the video. There's no internal heating in the Vermont monastery, you can see the wood burning stove in the cell. Carthusians are very strict about making sure that each monastery adheres to the same rules as the others, every two years they send monks to other monasteries to make sure no one is getting lax.
That is a hell of a story. It could easily be turned into a movie.

I don’t think that would be possible. I read somewhere that the prior only gave them one day to film. He sis d that once they left, they could never return.
"Into Great Silence" is like 3 hours long, about their oldest monastery in France.
How do they generate income, in this way of Life , I wonder.

They have a couple ways of generating income. The main stream of income at this particular location is Mt Equinox, also known as Skyline Drive. They charge $25 per car and $5 per passenger to drive up the Mt and the view is incredible. They have a gift shop at the bottom and that's where you pay to enter/drive Skyline Drive and in the gift shop they has thinks (religious items) that the monks made. At the top they have a building and it explains the history of the Mt and how this all came about, as well as a pray room. It was interesting to say the least. When driving up they have these houses and from what I read and was told that these homes are where family comes once a year to spend time with monk. The monks are only allowed to talk to each other on Mondays. This is one of the only charter houses in North America. The biggest overall income of the Carthusian Monks as a whole is Chartreuse Liqueur (they have a variety) which is a herbal type of liqueur. I only know all this because I was up in Vermont in that area and did the Skyline Drive.

If it were all beauty on the outside, the monks would be tempted to seek God on the outside. Yet the Kingdom of God is within our hearts and souls. Having simplicity and asceticism forces us to look within rather than outwards, and so this is why this can be very helpful to these holy men God bless

@@Chakra_king still, brutalist arquitecture doesn't seem appropriate. Its not modest, its outright ugly. Monasteries created countless saints and were never ugly.

Just one question. If those monks don't meet outsiders, how did they meet the Davidsons?
I’m guessing it was on one of their weekly walks. Once a week the Carthusians go on a hike and they walk in threes or so it seems from what I have read. If they met neighbours on the trail it would be natural to talk especially as the monks were talking to each other at that time. I could be wrong.

I was a young boy, probably 12 years old when I discovered this charter house. My family was vacationing in a little town on the opposite side of the mountain, a town called Sangate. I will never forget it
