    I had one of the basset horns in it was created for the Strauss opera called😮 Electra. Apparently there were three Basset horns made for that performance of the piece, two of them were destroyed during World War Two. They were pitched so their “C” would sound as “F”.

    In the 18th C Mozart’s clarinets and basset horn designed by Anton Stsdler were designed for playing more expressively his concerto and quintet in the authentic style at that time. Most performances these days go for virtuosic speed , not as Mozart intended.

    This video, while well intentioned, is completely misleading. There is no surviving manuscript in Mozart's hand of the so called clarinet in A. You reference that "this is the clarinet wrote is concerto for" is pure speculation. The clarinet of Mozart's day only had a handful of key, for starters. What you are playing is a MODERN clarinet with an additional four semitones.

    If I would be able to get a Basset A Clarinet, I would be more than happy to. It's exceptionally useful when you need to play specific music such as Mozart's Concerto and Stravinsky's L'histoire du Soldat, with the possibility to go down to the required low notes. And also, for me it's always cool to have a Clarinet that could reach down to the bottom C.

    Anton Stadler used basset clarinets that went to low written B, rather than C. There are several passages in Mozart's clarinet concerto where the original went to low B. I've also spotted at least one passage in the quintet where the clarinet probably went to low B as well. As far as I know, the only one to make basset clarinets to low B is Stephen Fox.

    Turbo Bitch I assume that you mean, the original penned by Mozart? That's been long lost. Probably it was in the hands of Anton Stadler, who palmed it at some point for money. The only versions available from the time were revised for conventional A clarinet (down to low E).

  • @JohnRandomness105
    @JohnRandomness1057 жыл бұрын

    Turbo Bitch: This is mere speculation, but I have the idea that Mozart's original manuscript (for Stadler) was at one time in some archive or perhaps someone's house. Then came WWII in particular, in which Europe had the daylights bombed out. The manuscript might have been destroyed then.

    Re: the "fancy" basset horn...yes, all basset horns are keyed to low C. That is the purpose of the "basset" moniker. If it weren't keyed to low C, it would just be an alto clarinet in F. (And there HAVE been low Eb bassets made, but very very few. I've only ever seen or heard of 2, and they both had low C extensions added, because basset horn repertoire requires those notes, as they are the entire raison d'etre for the instrument in the first place.)

  • @JoshJNYC
    @JoshJNYC10 жыл бұрын

    Actually, no. The A clarinet is longer overall, and all of the toneholes are different sizes and in different places on the instrument than the Bb...the barrels are often interchangeable, and in some cases, the barrels that ship with A clarinets are actually a bit shorter than barrels for Bb instruments. (I use the same mouthpiece and Backun barrel on both my Bb and A clarinets, and some clars, like the Selmer Privilege, was specficially designed to use the same barrel on both clarinets)
