Mine could sniff for actually forever, as could a lot of dogs, so I'll share what's worked for me: Once i can tell my dog will just be sitting and sniffing for a while, i set a two minute timer (theoretically could be much shorter). Once the timer is up, i gently pull on the leash by bouncing it. I pull on the leash the same way when i want her to jog with me, so she quickly stops sniffing, jumps away goofily, and does a little jog with me.

My dog doesn't sniff at all when she walks. She patrols for squirrels and especially daring birds.

The walk is for them, I know she wants to 'sniff'. If I want to go for a walk for speed and exercise, I leave my baby home.

I let her sniff for a few seconds, up to about 30, then we move on. It's her walk, I'm just chaperoning 😁

I set a two minute timer if I think she's being too long then gently bounce her leash until she gets the idea. She'll hop away all goofy once she's content with leaving.
