The internal monologue part of this video was amazing 🤣 sit back down, lmao, nicely done. Personally, I just feel like I don't have time for RPGs like I did when I was younger - I was poor in money, but rich in time. I feel similarly about many games where there's a steep learning curve - I don't have the luxury of time to "git gud bro". Shorter games have become much more of my mainstay these days. You're on the money with the "leave them wanting more" though, for sure. Nicely articulated & chill as usual, my dude! Appreciate you & your content! 🙏

I knew something was up when I found myself talking about Elden Ring the same way I talked about my degree in STEM: "If I had known how hard it was going to be ahead of time, I don't think I would have started." Even so, I have fond memories playing Elden Ring, and I'd recommend it in a heartbeat. There's just no way I'm ever playing it again, lol. Elden Ring is a special case, though. For most players, the knowledge and skill you gained from beating Elden Ring isn't going to help much on a new game. It's always going to be difficult. The only way it won't be difficult is if you've min/maxed some absurd route (which most players won't do)... or you're following a power leveling guide with exploits. There's no other game like that.

I recently started Dragon quest 11. It's supposed to be a fantastic rpg. I'm almost 20h in and I'm barely having fun, the story is going nowhere and the combat feels really basic. I'm glad I got it on a sale. Chained Echoes kinda ruined jrpgs for me I think :P.

I really do need to try Chained Echoes one day... I played DQ11 last year, and I think I can see where you're coming from. Im flipping Rog Ally, switch and Steamdeck for small profits. And in my honest opinion, the Steamdeck Oled isnt something u need to upgrade for. Every time I open my Switch Oled, Im so amazed for how great the screen looks compared to the normal LCD one, but with the Steamdeck, I dont have that. And I love Oled, the moment I bought an Oled Tv, I knew I could never ever go back to LCD. But putting the LCD and Oled steamdeck side by side, Im just not that Impressed, sure u got way better Battery life and a little bigger screen, but is that really worth it to pay almost double 🤷‍♂️ right now im maining the Oled model, but I do plan on selling it and keeping the LCD instead.

I pre-ordered my 512 as soon as I could and I've done most of my gaming on my SD since I got it. I'm thinking about getting an OLED one for the better battery life because that has been a problem for me a few times. Don't worry too much about the playability status, obviously Proton isn't 100% perfect and there are definitely unplayable games but beyond that just keep the specs in mind and try some less demanding "Unsupported" games, Rogue Heroes says that it's unsupported but the game plays perfectly, I've put hours into it and have never had an issue, I know there have been a couple of other games with similar results. On the other hand I tried playing Lego SW The Skywalker Saga and the performance was not good despite it being listed as "Verified", it couldn't even maintain a steady framerate.

  • @IntentionalBrandon
    @IntentionalBrandon6 күн бұрын

Great points! The playability status is a great starting place, but if I'm really interested in buying a game that's unsupported or unknown, I immediately check ProtonDB to see if there's an easy way to get it working (if anything is even required). Such a great site.

There need to be a balance between translation (left side) and keeping the original game's spirit (right side) Too far to the left: Current political inserts, memes, etc. Too far to the right: Honorifics, cultural references , etc. (which I don't mind, but I know would confuse the masses) Anything in between that should be the goal. In fact, as long as the test audience understands and it gets you the game classification rating that you wanted, those should be your goals. In your example of a perverted old man, was there a mass hysteria back in the 90' because of Dragon Balls' Master Roshi or the old man looking into the Celadon City Gym in Pokémon Red/Blue? No, it's only because of things like DEI that these things are changed over the years because at the end of the day, companies know that any lost sales over such minor things are nothing compared to the money they get in investments for having a better ESG scores.

  • @IntentionalBrandon

One of the big things for me is if it pulls me out of the game world. I like having some separation from the real world when I play games, so political references and the like are usually not my favorite. Unless it's a core component of the source, of course.

I think the too many cooks part hits home. I wholeheartedly agree with everything you are saying but some companies like Yen Press have tested my patience. You cannot be making mistakes in every single volume of a series. You cannot attribute a villains monologue to a protagonist saying it (WTF). You cannot translate a characters name which is Tivey ( Tee-Bi in katakana) as "TB" (I am not kidding) when the earlier translator had translated it as Tivey for 5 volumes. You cannot call Patarasche as Patalash just from the Romaji when Patarasche is a name from a western cartoon. My problem is with the companies rushing out a product. Perfection is overrated but errors cannot be tolerated in every single god damn release.

The one feature of the OLED not present in the LCD that I wish I had is the ability to wake the Deck via a Bluetooth controller. I haven’t tested it myself, but I believe they got it working on the OLED model. That would probably make me want to play docked more often. It’s a small thing, but every bit of friction matters. So, I'm definitely getting a Steam Deck at some point. Admittedly in large part because of the experiences you've shared here, so thank you! 🙏 Lots of great info for me as a future Steam Deck owner. I don't love Epic as a company personally, but I lowkey wish I would have at least claimed free games over the years. Same with Prime Gaming - missed out on a lot of free stuff. I'm mostly looking forward to buying a game ONCE on Steam or another store and just owning it (hopefully) for life. Free online is also nice since true couch co-op is difficult when your gamer pals are quite literally scattered around the world. One interesting note about console stores: PS is the only console (that I know of) where you can't buy digital game codes from other sources. I've saved a good chunk of change over the years from buying digital codes (from reputable sources) for Nintendo and Xbox consoles. Can't say the same for PS consoles. I think competition in the market is healthy, so it's a shame that Sony chose the route they did, but I get it. Anyschways, keep up the great content, my dude! 🫶 Always happy when I see a new video drop! 🥰

I am so excited to hear your thoughts on it when you do grab one! Let me know if you end up having questions about anything. Buying a game once is more and more appealing as remasters happen over and over and over. Not that I don’t appreciate the remasters, but sometimes it’s nice not to need one just to be able to play a game on modern hardware. One other nice thing about Steam is inviting someone to play a co-op game with you without that person needing to buy it. Like Mario Kart on DS (pretty sure that one only needed one game card).

I have great pride for my physical game collection, but as I get older and the collection grows, it's becoming less and less sustainable for sure! I know we'll have to start paring things down and really consider what it is that brings me joy from these objects. Like someone else pointed out, the current games have less and less that make the physical box and disc something to treasure. Having multiple (and more convenient platforms) also make the box on the shelf less of a need. Great points brought up, and I loved seeing footage of (what I presume is) your remaining collection!

Great points as usual! 🤟 I went full digital at some point in the past decade myself, but, like you, I loved saving up for physical copies to play & display when I was younger. There was something so enticing about holding a physical copy, admiring the box art, flipping through the manual, and keeping it all in good condition. But as you've pointed out, the games on discs or cartridges these days are not always complete due to patches, DLC, etc. And we rarely get manuals like we used to! 😔 The convenience of digital won out for me. Most of my physical copies are just decoration at this point and for what? To take up space? Sadly, that's mostly what they do at this point. There is still a sense of joy and pride when I look at my collection, but I'm much less excited about or interested in collecting than I used to be. And yes, moving sucks! 😭 And coming from a guy who definitely did schlep a serious amount of physical hardware and software to Japan for the brief time I lived there, it was not worth the move there and back again. Sounds like you made the wiser choice, whether intentionally or not based on your lifestyle at the time, and with that decision came more freedom and the opportunity to adapt & evolve. I love that you took on this potentially controversial topic. Quite recently, I heard from classmates in my Japanese class about how they are starting to see that subtitles are "just wrong" when watching anime or playing video games, and I had to interject that "wrong" is rather subjective as there might be many reasons why the English subtitles were written the way they were. Localizers do a lot of work and are under so much pressure from so many directions and their resources/time/stipulations are not consistent between projects. Thanks for shedding some light on why subtitles aren't one-for-one translations!

I am a hardcore sucker for DD:DA, and DD2 is definitely somewhat of a disappointment. While it has some welcome QoL improvements (like camping or more fast travel options), it severely lacks in terms of both story and actual game content compared to the first game. Especially the post game is disappointing... nothing that compares to the "Everfall" dungeon or the "Ur-Dragon" fight. And obviously nothing that comes close to the "Bitterblack Isle" expansion. Also - putting a time limit on the post-game is the dumbest idea ever; it keeps the player from really exploring the "Unmoored World". I still love the game, but I really hope they will deliver some big expansion DLC.

The trails in the sky games aren’t verified or playable but they run perfectly! Been playing trails sc without a single issue

That is awesome! I loved those three, and I’m pretty sure Proton was not able to handle them on Linux for a long time, so this is a big step in the right direction.

Working to be more intentional with my gaming, reading, working out, etc. It has gotten noticeably harder to do with the growing commitments (family, work, etc) and moving forward… I’ll be staying away from all of the new game purchases, as I always end up playing Pokemon ROMs from GBA/GBC/3DS.

I try to maintain similar pillars in my life, and it's a real challenge. There's something to be said for the comfort of a game you're already familiar with. Pokemon is a wonderful nostalgia blast. Maybe one day I'll get around to trying some of the earlier ones I missed!

Great video. Like you say, there are so many factors to consider. A few other big ones for me that relate strongly to each other are my ability to set aside time to focus and commit to a game which is asking for a big investment and the accessible and easy nature of games like roguelikes and live-service games that offer portioned and non-commitment based experiences. I often have a lot going on and for me the big RPG experiences which I value more than anything are things I want to set aside time for, that I tell myself I don't have.... catch me two hours later doing 'just one more run' on Balatro.

Glad you enjoyed it! For me, Apex Legends is the game I’ll start up when I intend to play for only 30 minutes and I end up playing for three times that. Should’ve just played one of my RPGs!

I definitely struggle with the stress of the backlog, especially with new games release that I really wanna play (I'm looking at you Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Persona 3 Reload). It's even tougher as a content creator and wanting to preserve certain games for that content making. I've really tried to take a step back to prevent gaming for feeling like work. Regardless of the backlog, I've been trying to focus on games I feel like playing in my free time, and saving a few titles for content making.

Yes, very much this. Once you start making content with specific games, it gets all sorts of hairy.

Great video! I'm glad you looked at how the Steam Deck works for you and your gaming habits and purchases. I'm curious if there are other aspects that are of concern or not, such as sound output, connecting to another monitor (or if you don't bother), storage capacity, etc. It's great to hear your voice again! Looking forward to more :) P.S. it's a shame that LiveLaughLadle wasn't considered as a channel name
