Welcome to the wild. As long as I can remember I have always wanted to have a piece of land in the woods. I wanted to be able to rely more on myself and less on the world for my basic needs. I wanted a place to go to escape the hectic pace of life, spend time with family and connect with creation. I purchased an Amish made shed and am converting it into a home. An off grid tiny cabin located in the wilds of northern Minnesota. Along the way my time will also be filled with activities that promote self sufficiency and a weekend homesteading theme. Van Camping, hunting, fishing, kayaking, foraging, mushroom hunting, and of course all the projects that come with an off grid homestead.

Bear roast ! Potatoes and all the fixins ! lol. And I’m gonna be the outsider and say Fox. With these ridiculously mild winters we’ve both seen we’ve seen a pretty big uptick with fox but I’m sure all of those similarly sized animals are doing much better as far as survival rates of their young. Take care T
El Chupacabra
I say its a pine martin, the black tip on the tail gives it away. The bear may be to comfortable being around the cabin when your there.
Nice capture. I will say try and not leave any trash around (learned that a few yrs ago). I also cleaned the bbq good when we were done. That could have been a otter
I have lots of water in my area so otter is certainly a possibility. Everytime I show up I'm expecting the grill to be in pieces. 😑
I think coyote. Stay safe!!
Grey fox was my second. This seems pretty low to the ground. but Idk.
both.... i had just asked you about bears or wolves a few months ago because i was also being visited... scary when you think of the dog or visiting kids. stay strapped Tre :)
Yeah, I'll probably have to have something handy
If you encounter, do not make it feel welcome, do not talk to it in a friendly tone. People need to learn how to imitate nature and speak nature’s language. When an animal encroaches on another animal’s territory, that animal responds with warning growls and snarls and a hostile posture to drive the invader away. Bears are confused by the mixed messages humans give it. Don’t confuse the bear or it will keep coming back.
Solid advice.
Cute until they're not... Really like the short reel format, Tre.
I buddy of mine from NO Land suggested it!
@@TRERUNSWILD Gonna be cool! YW buddy. :-) You have so much cool content that can get out faster to your subscribers. You go boi. (Don't forget to update RD's rider.) ;-) Extra treats in his trailer - er your van.
Great captures! So fun anticipating what will show up next.
For sure! Nice to have something other than deer for a change
coyote... you can see his tail....
Idk, seems a bit low to the ground. I do have grey fox though. That was my other thought
Hi Terry,if there’s no bird seed, food scraps or dog food out in the yard the bear is probably just passing through from time to time ..I think having Riverdog around the bear will probably keep a respectable distance from your immediate yard …saying that ..sometimes..they lose any fear of a human or dog..so if you start to get nervous of it hanging around you will have to dispose of it…on the good side tho if that were to happen..bear meat is very tasty 😋😋
I think you are right that he is just moving through. that area is a natural corridor for deer. Makes sense it would be for other animals. So far he hasn't checked out the cabin so hopefully he is still shy of humans-dogs.
You know the fish and game laws as well as anyone. I would go ahead and grease him. They can cause all kinds of damage. You have too much invested in the property. At least put up some window shutters. Good luck Uncle Terry.
Maybe take that canister of cheese balls home when you depart. Some food scent has him curious. The other animal looks like weasel or maybe a fox. It’s so low to the ground.
I usually burn the fish fry oil in the fire but I've wondered about the BBQ grill and all the grease that drips on the bottom. I've kind of expected to come back and find that smashed up.
Dang little to close. Had one take one of our small deer feeders last year and we never did find it he must took a snack with him lol thanks for video
As long as he stays out of the yard I'll give him space. He seemed to be just moving through so hopefully he isn't even aware of the cabin yet.
Opossum maybe. Hope you have more trail cams around. The bears are creatures of habbit. Bold ones that are close like that deserve a cautious human and pet dog for the rest of the summer. We have way too many now at the cabin build in WV. The cell cams work best for immediate security and protection. Stay safe.
I love the tactacam cell cams. instant alerts for security. We don't have possums this far north. It's funny how I always think of bears as northern animals but you have them in WV and another comment from GA said they have them.
@@TRERUNSWILD tactacam works best for us in the mountains here.
Hey Terry. One of my trail cameras caught a black bear on my property at my cabin build spot on June 8th in upstate NY. I don't think he's been back since.
Was he a young bear? I wonder if mamma is kicking them out of the family and they are looking for new homes?
I don't think he was a young bear, but I'm no expert. I just hope he left the area.
It looks like a skunk to me but I can't see a white stripe it's very low to the ground and raccoons typically are higher off the ground. The second little critter could be an opossum they tend to be nocturnal
We don't have possums this far north so we can eliminate that. Seems he had a black tip on his tail?
Black bears are pretty harmless. He shouldn't bother you maybe you should buy some bear spray just in case and keep it on you. Typically black bears which is a much less aggressive breed will run a few clap or make noise they don't like to interact with humans. You definitely want to be prepared and you want riverdog to be safe. They recommend putting bells on your dog.
All the bears I've encountered in the woods have always run like a scared chicken when they saw me. Except the one that tore my tent apart on a camping trip.
Bears can be dangerous but I just pay attention when out at my place. They are more of a pain in the butt. Will get into your stuff, grill, plastic gas cans & such. & make a mess of the place. Had one tear the screen out of my porch to get to the mouse traps.
Oh geez. Peanut butter on the porch traps. I hadn't even thought of that! That is my concern is that they can be so destructive.
It looks similar to a king bolete (Boletus Edilus) from out here on the west Coast. Folks around here call them "Gambonis" but I don't ever hear that name used elsewhere for a king bolete. The sponge-like pores instead of an open, paper-thin gill structure should make it reasonably safe to try in small amounts. Even if it doesn't taste good it shouldn't be seriously toxic. (I don't ever test my luck on mushrooms with gills. I'll pass on them unless I'm 100% certain of the identification.)
Yeah, I think you are right. I dried them and haven't even tried them yet but I'm convinced now they are kings.
Black bears are harmless. Id be surprised if there are even ten documented black bear attacks in Minnesota in the past 40 years.
Yeah, All the ones I've encountered in the woods have ran for their lives when they saw me. Except the time one tore my tent apart at Savanna Portage.
Too close for comfort
Hopefully he stays out of the cabin
I think it's a,Wampus Cat.
Could be. Or a chupacabra. Either a good chance.
@@TRERUNSWILD Be careful Brother. Lol
Scary cool
River has been barking at something at night. I thought it was deer but maybe this guy.
I have 5 black bears that call my 40-acre property home. I love having them around. They keep the coyotes away from the property.
Any issues with them breaking in or destroying stuff?
Someone up the road has alot of bears! Lots of scat there apparently.
Nope...They tend to be very curious when I'm not there. I have had them come close to the cabin when I'm there, but as soon as they see me. They fly up the mountain. You just have to not make it easy for them to access food. I really enjoy having them around. But I might just be lucky. They are still wild and unpredictable.
I BBQ outside and often wonder if a bear or 2 will fight my BBQ because they can smell meat smells under the hood?..
But, do they?
Do they what?
@@TRERUNSWILD Poop in the woods!😀
😂
It's a little bear. Cool - either way.
Yeah, pretty skinny, too
Couldnt see enough of the animal..i had a fisher here once..made sure i kept Lacey inside..they would have torn each other apart!
At least they could climb a tree and get away from River
Like wommen, bouth😂
😂
Every predator is dangerous!
Truth.
👁👁🖐😎
hola!
The bear is both. The “eyes”? Raccoons 😊😊😊😊
I do have lots of coon on the cameras.
The fried fish looks like it turned out really nice! Save some for me next time
For sure!!
Are you still doing the hatchery gig? I suspect your income from that will go to finishing the radical bunkhouse. I have a feeling that eventually you may make that building your main hangout. It’s looking good and would be easier to add an addition if needed in the future. Thank you for sharing your latest adventure as you close in on 20K subs.
Thanks Evan. Nope, the hatchery was done a couple of weeks ago. I made some really good progress on it this week but it wont show until the video after next.
Awesome tip on the Coleman stove. I just passed on 3 of those at a neighbors garage sale….wonder if they sold! As much as I loved white gas I like just stocking one fuel source. And the white gas seems like it’s getting harder to find.
I agree, like you say, one more thing to have on hand. When I already have a dozen green tanks around. Plus i refill my green tanks from a big 20 lber.
look at you pointing a knife at us lol and in your previous job what would you do
OMG! I saw that when I was doing edits!!!
@@TRERUNSWILD it was funny
We always have walleye wings in the BWCA! My absolute favorite are the cheeks though! Hope you have a great weekend ahead! 🌲😊❤️
I'd never had them before and was surprised how much meat they had!. On a side note, I switched out the tar paper for synthetic sticky on my bunkhouse roof before I put metal on this week. I picked that idea up from your house remodel video and then looked into it and found it it was the way to go. So thanks for the info on your video!
The problem with those 1 pound propane tanks is they are insanely overpriced. Unless you refill them from your 20 lb tanks, it’s going to be an expensive way to cook.
So true. I do refill mine. I've done that for 25 years and it works great.
No link in description for the propane adapter for stove?
OOPS! I'll get right on that, Thanks!
Hey Terry...love raised garden beds. Potatoes would be a good option. Just put whole potatoes with eye roots deep in the bottom and away you go! No need to cut potato up.Tip: soak your seeds in water for a few hours or overnight to soften the hull. Near 100% success rate for crop development. Siding looks good...and we knew you did it right! It'll be cool to see the baby burd...odd that there's only 1 egg though. The taco fish eating was fun...bone, scales, meat, bone...where did that come from? Lol. Cheers to you and the Riverdog from Canada 🇨🇦
I checked today and we have 3 birds! I'll show them in the roofing video that ups after the next.
@@TRERUNSWILD nice!
Good vid.
Glad you enjoyed it
Great video! Try to marinate the filets and collars in Frank's hot sauce first. Then double egg dip your fillets in the dry shake and bake batter. Another neat trick is to put your favorite grated cheese, after Pam butter spray, in the hot iron skillet first. Then quickly place the tortilla on top of the cheese. Pat it down a little to spread the cheese out evenly. Be patient you need to wait long enough for the cheese to start to brown to your liking. If you try and take the tortilla off too soon the cheese does not stick to your wrap. Then all you have is melted cheese in the bottom of the pan. Once you get it browned and pull your wrap out, the cheesy side then becomes the inside of your burrito. Oh, do not forget to add more hot sauce to your liking. Maybe try on a non stick skillet first until you get the timing to brown the cheese just right. ❤😅
Those sound like great ideas! Especially the preseason hot sauce dip!
Thanks for the video. We need be doing more on our property but it been I'm 90s with index of closer to 100÷ hard get motivated other than watering garden lol. Have great day from south ga
I suppose you get a ton of humidity too! We hit 80's yesterday and I almost melted!
Yeah man, those fish wings we call them collars on the big tunas. Try a foil wrap with some seasoning, garlic and butter. You need the Baja fish taco white sauce. Mayo with some milk, lime juice and a dash of cayenne. Make it into a drizzle over the top of taco.
Oh Man my mouth is watering! Definitely should do the baja season next time!
That fish looks delicious! Saw a guy in Virginia use concrete blocks to make two raised garden beds, then he built cage-type tops on hinges out of wood and hardware cloth. Stopped the deer from munching on the plants.
I just planted some apple trees along the driveway. I'm sure it was like a big "welcome" sign to the deer
I am over-whelmed by the power of your lawn mower? Is that thing even legal? Do you need a license to operate that machine? 🤣😂
Only in 37 states!! 😆
